This makes me always wonder, how the Vikings were able to evolve their style of ship building, warfare and what triggered their hunger for world wide conquests. I know the simple answer, but there had to have been more to this. These were nothing but poor sod farmers and fishermen, and they evolved overnight into fearsome warriors without equal.
From the stories of old ancestors, they did raids before 796 Raid of Lindisfarne. They just attacked smaller locations and they got the experience, training from birth and harsh environments with the will of the mythology backed them and they just wanted to have glory infront of the gods so they could get passage to Valhalla.
I visited the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul and on a banister of the upper story, there is a preserved elder Futhark runic carving of the Varangian guard (Vikings). It was astonishing to see, and I recommend all with the ability to go there do so and see the sights.
Sea fortifications and a fleet. How much of that ended up influencing Portugal's way of conducting warfare. Portugal was strongly influenced by Andalus Moors and the Crusades. And if it wasn't for the defragmentation of Andalusia into Taifa Kingdoms, not even with the help of the crusaders and the monastic orders, would Portugal have reached it's current mainland territory.
This video was great. Without even making spoilers for Vikings the tv series you explained the whole story very well of the viking raids. Very Impresisve.
The vikings TV series was very historically inaccurate. It is what can be called a "historical fiction", and should never be used in a informational history video.😂
Love the videos ! I'd love to see something on the lusitatians. Apparently they were a warrior society that resisted Romes expansion for quite some time
The Romans assassinated their leader (Viriato) in order to conquer the land. If they didn't, they could have conquered the land but many more romans would have fallen. They would fight in the region of Viseu, Guarda where the Estrela Mountains are located, they would use the mountains as their advantage.
I think one part you missed about the viking raids alongside Bjorn Ironside in 858 was a mass destruction on the viking side. Sources suggest that the Emir of Cordoba did indeed defeat the vikings at sea. Out of the 30 vessels of viking fleets that that journeyed through the Mediterranean, looting various cities, only 3 vessels returned their coast in the North. The more you know :)
Everything is God's will in a way, because He allows or makes certain things to happen. And He does it because He knows what He wants accomplished, and it is because of peoples' actions, and even inactions. God's desire is that all would be saved, but most are not. It's a personal choice. The ones who pray to and obey God in their personal lives are the ones who benefit from God's will personally, which most importantly, means making heaven their home. Whenever I heard the account of the Lindisfarne raid I often wondered was it exaggated because of the dragons, but thinking about it maybe that was how they viewed the prows of the Viking ships?
The dragon prow was definitely viewed as terrifying, including by Vikings themselves. Iceland had a law that states any ship approaching land must temporarily remove the dragons head to avoid scaring the landvaettir, which are the land spirits.
@@corymoon2439 Yes I know but I was reflecting on the report of Lidisfarne, I doubt that they removed the dragon prow in case they upset the monks, maybe that would happen today with all the PC crap we have.
What is interesting is that a thing/animal called dragon was known all over the world, like in China and other parts of Asia, Northern and Central Europe etc. It's so weird different people from different sides of the world knew the same kind of flying, fire breathing reptile during the time they probably didn't know anything about each others. Makes you wanna think dragons really existed at some point 😀
@@-RunninNGunnin- Uhmm, flying fire-breathing dragons not so much lol. The word Dragon wasn't even known in old norse and the prows depicts the Jörmungandr / Midgårdsormen (The Midgard Worm/Serpent) Worm or Serpent would be more accurate in the case of their prows.

I recently came across this channel and frankly it is awesome. Great mix of history, story telling, and audio/visual artistry. It brings the subjects to life in a way few have attempted. Also, the fact that the stories are short and to the point gives one the ability to enjoy their history with the time they have, and then go for a "deep dive'" later on. Bravo.
Superb art and narration as always! The maps really helped me grasp the story too. The Vikings really were their own breed. They really really pushed the human limit, not really in a good way, but it's fascinating to say the least. Now I have a glimpse into what Viking and anti-Viking strategy was like!
Prior to the 2012 London Olympics, new roads were being constructed at Ridgeway Hill in southern England in preparation for the games. I live not far away from the site. The workers discovered human remains when digging. The area was excavated and they discovered over 50 bodies, all young men that had been decapitated and thrown into a large pit, the heads in one pile and the bodies in another. Analysis of the bones found they were of Scandinavian origin and from the late 900’s, a time when Viking raids were frequent. It’s believed they were a Viking raiding party that had been caught and executed. Three heads were missing indicating they had been taken and possibly displayed on spikes. One of the men had his teeth filed down to sharp points like a cat, perhaps to look more menacing. Crazy to think what used to go on hundreds of years ago right where we live now
Years ago a history college produced a magazine with modern headlines about historical events. One was how the priests / monks greated the Vikings, welcomed them and then said they'd have to pay a dock tax to tie up their long boats. Well as they say "the rest is history".
I think one of the reasons why the Emirate of Cordba was able to easily defend against the Vikings after the first raid, was because their domain was more centralized compared to other Western European realms, they also had higher military tech, thanks to the adoption of Greek Fire. There were also religious volunteer warriors who guarded the coastal forts which gave birth to the "Ribat" mentality, where religious volunteers established brotherhoods, centered around forts along the frontiers, where they would focus on religious matters and military defense of what they deemed as "Dar al-Islam" or abode of peace, which arguably had an impact on the Catholic military orders that would be established hundreds of years later.
They did make mention of the difference that being fragmented as a society had on their perceived and real vulnerability when it came to defending from attacks

History Dose, I'd love it if you touched on the ancient Gaelic warriors like the Gallowglass or King Brian Boru. My ancestors were forced off their island of Gigha in the Hebrides and forced to become mercenaries called Gallowglass. Gallowglass were kindof like ronin. They traveled as lauded, mercenary warriors who had Nordic / Gaelic blood. They came from the islands of Scotland to Ulster Ireland to fight in wars for gold. Like their Viking ancestors, money talked. In fact, the word 'Gallowglass' means 'Foreign Gael' in the Gaelic language. That's because all Scotts on the islands west of Scotland had Norse blood. Many vikings intermingled with the native Gaels of those islands. After awhile, my ancestor settled down from fighting. And around this time, the Irish weren't happy with their Scottish cousins living on their lands in the north. He and his family made the hard decision of moving to the colony of the US in South Carolina. I returned back to Europe. There's a lot of history to my family and our great culture. What say you?

I love the anglo saxon, viking conflicts. So many heros showed themselves, it's amazing what war can bring out in men, both the good and the bad.
In war, you see the greatest extremes. Acts of cruelty and sacrifice, good and evil. It's something that amazed me for my whole life. In the worst and most brutal moments, you see the best and worst.

Another thing common in Mongol, Hun and Viking history is that the time of flourishing of such people lies during times of severe division of strong central power. Like at the collapse of the Roman empire for the Huns. Of the Abbasid caliphate and Chinese empire for the Mongols and a divided europe after Charlemagne for the Vikings

Hunger &scarcity is the world's greatest motivator
Maybe after drifting around the ocean lost they were pissed and decided to invade to improve their attitudes . 😂😂
From the stories of old ancestors, they did raids before 796 Raid of Lindisfarne. They just attacked smaller locations and they got the experience, training from birth and harsh environments with the will of the mythology backed them and they just wanted to have glory infront of the gods so they could get passage to Valhalla.
Poor farming land with limited growing time due to long Northern winters plus a growing population contributed.
Just look how disco became so popular.
Beauteous artwork.
Also, the soundtracks used and the voiceover for this video, couldnt have been done better. Great work
I visited the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul and on a banister of the upper story, there is a preserved elder Futhark runic carving of the Varangian guard (Vikings). It was astonishing to see, and I recommend all with the ability to go there do so and see the sights.
Those weren't raiders though, those were body guards or King's guards.

Thank you so much for this SPECIAL DATA 💖💖💖❤
I think one part you missed about the viking raids alongside Bjorn Ironside in 858 was a mass destruction on the viking side. Sources suggest that the Emir of Cordoba did indeed defeat the vikings at sea. Out of the 30 vessels of viking fleets that that journeyed through the Mediterranean, looting various cities, only 3 vessels returned their coast in the North.
The more you know :)

Jesus was a philosopher and teacher and healer. I'm sure the Vikings woulda found him useful.
@@therantwithgrant2051 They actually thought he was just a weakling (at least in Denmark) because he didn't die fighting, or fight at all. The king of Denmark had to depict Jesus in a certain way in order to make him look less weak.

In Old Norse, there are two words, both nouns: a víkingr is a person, while víking is an activity. So calling them scandinavians would be more historically accurate. Nice seeing some of old English history going out to more people though, gives a better idea of what we went through before the empire was even a twinkle in someone's eye.

Crazy to think what used to go on hundreds of years ago right where we live now
Whoever did the music deserves a raise
Really impressed as the program progressed, very well done. 👏🏻

That’s right! Thank you!!
Years ago a history college produced a magazine with modern headlines about historical events. One was how the priests / monks greated the Vikings, welcomed them and then said they'd have to pay a dock tax to tie up their long boats. Well as they say "the rest is history".
Love it
These videos have such power and emotion. I feel like I’m there despite it being just words and images!
I think one of the reasons why the Emirate of Cordba was able to easily defend against the Vikings after the first raid, was because their domain was more centralized compared to other Western European realms, they also had higher military tech, thanks to the adoption of Greek Fire.
There were also religious volunteer warriors who guarded the coastal forts which gave birth to the "Ribat" mentality, where religious volunteers established brotherhoods, centered around forts along the frontiers, where they would focus on religious matters and military defense of what they deemed as "Dar al-Islam" or abode of peace, which arguably had an impact on the Catholic military orders that would be established hundreds of years later.
holy shit that last part i didnt know that
The caliphs never had Greek fire
