Really, in my opinion, for the money a quite versatile bass. Many options with all of those confusing, for a beginner, controls. It can always be modified if you want something different. Thank you for another excellent review, Lobster.
That’s something I’ve always said about the V3. At its price point it’s gonna be so many peoples’ first bass and perhaps first instrument. 7 knobs and a switch is a LOT and for a beginner, it can really ruin their perception of a good bass tone. I wish they made something along the lines of a “V1” where it’s just a lower cost version of the V5 and priced it a little cheaper than the V3. That would be a much better entry level option
Hi Lobster I've got a 5 string V3 . I agree for a new player the preamp can be daunting but it's cheaper then a Classic vibe 5 string . I think the V5 is a better option . My tuners on my v3 are not perfect but it stays in tune. I really like the unbound actual rosewood neck and the rolled edges are better then the player plus basses I just tried recently.
Another excellent review! Stumbled upon one of these on the used rack at GC for $100 less than the new price…..didn’t need another bass but at that price I couldn’t walk away. I’ll do a bridge & tuners and have fun with it….
I have a black Sire V3 version 2. No complaints at all. I left the bridge but replaced the saddles as I really hate those saddles. I'm not much of a Jazz bass guy. I prefer the Precision neck and have two P+J basses that work better for me. The Sire is an incredible value. Really just a stupid good value. Love those rolled edges. I think the pickups are very decent and as long as you don't go too crazy with the preamp controls, I think it's pretty decent for a bass in the price range.
The tuners on the V3 look an awful lot like the ones on my 1. Generation Sire V7 from 2016. I have had two of them replaced under warranty as the cogs broke. The pre-amp originates from the 1. gen V7's, which back then was priced somewhere between the current 2. Gen V3 and V7's. So I think the pre-amp is a nice match for both the V3 and the V7, though I have never used it that much. I don't find it to be particulary complicated, but it is quite redundant in most situations. The V7 is also pretty heavy, so if I were to buy another Sire I would probably go for one of the lighter, passive 5'er-models: U5, V5 - and I will definately stay tuned for reviews on the P5 and the D5!
Bought this bass a few months ago; just playing in passive mode and let the amp do bit of the sound game; the tuners on my bass work great; so I absolute recomend the V3; the look and finish is outstanding;
“Of course I agree with myself “ well there’s your problem. Once you become more self critical you will transcend to the next level. Seriously, though. I can’t agree more about the Sires. Small issues aside, they are incredible values and anyone looking for an affordable Jazz Bass style instrument should start with these than Squiers.
Great review lobster, 👍🏾 I agree with the comments ,the mahogany body makes it sound kinda different also, would be nice for sire to make a passive mahogany body with 70s spacing....that would be interesting 🤔
Hello! Are the Tunners machine great? I heard so many people saying that on the V3 (the non passive one ) that tuners suck. Also whats the difference with V3 and V3 2nd generation?
Nice updated review Lobster!! as always a great job!!, I buyed one of those a few months ago and I think it's just awesome for this price point, maybe I had some luck and I recived one of those with a little more care on details or quality control, I don't know, it's just a very nice JB in my humble opinion, I think they changed the previous desing on the battery door because of some people complaining about there was a very cheap battery door that usually brake up or something like that. Thanks for your videos, I always enjoy them!! ;)
Great review here. I'm still working with my Gen 1 V7. Plenty of gigs over the years and no issues at all. Good to know that they are still making decent basses, should I ever need to move on.
May I ask how bad the tuners really are? I'm looking to buy my first bass and overall I really love the V3's tone, versatility and the look for its price tag, but your point on the tuners makes me wonder if it's gonna be worth it later on after I actually learn how to play. Like a question suddenly pops in my head: do they make the strings go out of tune more easily than other tuners overtime? Or are they just harder to get the strings in tune? I refrained from mentioning swapping them out, because I might try to stay with stock ones for a while if I were to buy the V3! Anyway good vid as usual!
Heyo Lobster, nice review as always ;) I've had an eye on the v3 but as a 5 string. Did you got ur pinchers on one of those or the v7 fiver? The comparison to the m2 5 would be interesting as the m2 has a nice 35" but the pickups sound a bit meh, while the v3 pickups are really nice. But I guess this one is way heavier than the m2, being a jazz bass. Selling my ray35 and want to get smth nice. BTW You should check out the Ibanez sr605e, really good bass with special Nordstrand pickups

If you had to pick between V3 and V5? V3 have more versatility as far as tone, but the v5 neck is the best. With the V5 you need a great bass head to get that versatile tone control in my opinion. Some time I need to take my lil tc electronic bam200 amp head because of size, but it doesn't sound all that great with V5. But of course my GK legacy amp head sounds great (versatile) with my V5 most that 5th B string
Sounds great, and I love the style. I love the pickups, but I would still drop a set of Radioshop Jazz Bass pickups into it just to level it up as far as I can take it.
Yeah, my eye always gets caught by this thing that tries to emulate... a paddle, or a hanging sock or what? Totally un-musical and unattractive, maybe even reason not to buy a Sire.
Hi, I have a Sire V3 and I'm considering swapping out the pickups for a set of Seymour Duncan SJB-3's. Does anyone know if this will be a straight swap, meaning, the dimensions of both pickups, if they are the same? If not, could anyone recommend a good set of passive pickups that would be a straight swap. The main reason for the swap is that compared to my 1970's Fender Jazz bass, fitted with Seymour Duncan's, the Sire's output is a bit low and I have to crank up the volume on my Hartke 50-watt combo to get decent volume levels. Thanks for any advice.
I couldn't agree more on the bridges. I really like the V5 a lot. Somehow wish they would skip the pre-amp on th V3, make it passive and upgrade the hardware. It would still be different from the V5, because the V5 has the roasted maple neck. Still a pretty nice bass for the money. Really want to buy a P5, but I have no idea when those will be available. Great review!
I really like the sounds coming out of that bass. Sure, there is some overkill on the tone controls and the preamp, but I would think that after a little learning curve and watching this video to see what each does at each setting, anyone can figure it out and set it for the tone they want.
Thanks for this, Lobster! With all the tonal options (more specifically, boost/cut along with pickup blend) - do you think there are some obvious “go to” settings that would allow you to imitate other typical sounds like P, MM, Tbird?
this is a beginner question, but since the V3 already has an onboard preamp, do i need to plug the V3 into a DI or Preamp pedal before going into a mixer?
I mean you could plug any instrument directly into the mixer, but it's usually best to get some amp modeling or signal massaging via a DI box or amp before going into the board. The onboard preamp doesn't really provide the same functionality though it does buffer the signal
Thanks for the video! I've been looking for a budget 4 string as I only use a 6 string, mainly so it would be more comfortable to play music that only requires 4 strings. How would you compare the (unmodded) Sterling SUB sting ray 4 and this? Been drooling over the mint green one and waiting for it to get back in stock.
You can't really compare a stingray with a j-bass on specs. You got to go to the shop and play both to test how they feel in your hand. Ergonomically they are just too different. (I bought a stingray without testing and learned the hard way) good luck with your search
I recorded an EP with one of these and then a Dingwall on the next EP. I don't think either of them are "beginner" basses. It's really funny to hear that word when there are professional players in Vietnam who can't afford "professional" instruments. Guess I'll have to let them know they are "beginners" due to their financial status.
Everytime I think or hear the brand Sire it really scares me as a bass player, I'm not a pro player but I consider myself to be in the middle level when it comes to bass playing, I always treated Sire and other active basses to be the instrument for Pro players with insane bass skills, but gotta love the sound that it produces so I guess I'll just stick with my 13 year old passive Fernando bass that I had since my Junior years in highschool 😁 great review and information 🤘🤘🤘

My Sire V3 2nd gen 5 string is heavy man!!! But for a bass that has rolled fret edges, string through bridge and a 18v pre amp is a bargain. I also have noticed that the bass sounds different when using the pre amp even if it's set flat.
I spotted when I got my V7 that it has the same chunky tuners that came on my Squier Precision I bought *25 years ago*. It's disappointing that things haven't moved on and both have Hipshot HB7s in their future. The V7 has a Sadowsky preamp in its future too (thanks for your recent review if that!) but for now I'm trying to get as close to the "Sadowsky sound" with the stock Sire one as I can.
That’s good news. Thank you. I recently tried one in person and was impressed enough to order one of the new orange ones which hasn’t arrived yet. . One thing I noticed was that the tuners felt pretty darn good to me,which was surprising. You had derided the Sires tuning machines pretty emphatically.. did you have any specific trouble with the instrument staying in tune? Are they about the same as the SUB tuners or worse in your opinion?
@@MegaBassfunk Great question! With every V3 specifically I've tried, the Tuners were inconsistent in their turning motion and sometimes requiring a lot of force to turn. Accuracy was poor as well (it was hard to fine tune the tuning). In my experience, the V3 tuners were worse than the SUB tuners. Both I'd replace with Hipshots (or Wilkinsons to save money) as an upgrade if I were planning on using that bass as my main instrument
@@LowEndLobster well this wouldn’t be my main instrument but a “road” instrument, for gigs where my bass is at a higher risk of theft and/or damage. If the tuners disappoint, I would switch them out. I have a set of SUB tuners laying around or would consider a set of Grover vintage tuners , which seem similar to those on the G&L tribute basses. Affordable and smooth
@@MegaBassfunk Very nice. My overarching opinion on Sires and their quality bones applies to the V3 as well. Sire excels at making great bones and mod platforms. I'm not a huge fan of the preamp or the hardware, but that stuff can be changed and upgraded. What sits underneath all that stuff is absolutely solid though
I"m sorry Lobster, I"m gonna have to disagree with you on the "complexity" issue. And that's because you don't have to deal with the knobs if you don't want to - leave them centered and reach for the capability later on, when you're in the mood for it or you are looking for something extra. It's not like a complex operating system or a program on a computer for example where you HAVE to learn the complexities in order to do your job - it's there, but optional so why should it EVER be a disadvantage? Especially, after having seen what a subtly powerful tool a mid-sweep can be, I think it's a shame to turn people away from capabilities just because there's an extra knob or two.
hey look at that guy's bass so...ya like jazz? lol what more is there to say? Get Trev Wilkinson on the emails and get a jaco/geddy pair of icons out of his relic'd models over there at Vintage to demo for everyone. But they make a model of this 4 string maple thing I have coming tomorrow that's not only a 5 string but upgraded woods all around - birdseye maple on neck, front, back, the whole damn thing is made of birdseye maple and it looks like every unit I could find a pic of was as well. Oh yeah. And it's OEM *F R E T L E S S* - yeah, a 5 string maple acoustic f-hole (solid across the top like a violin) fretless bass that's 35" scale. THE FUCK? I WILL FIND ONE. The other two coming are a pristine Peavey Axcelerator (triple humbucker Hartley hot rails in a heavy as fuck solid ash strat) with the OHSC and an FGN FL Flame Expert Plain Top, blackburst that I got for a stupid good deal even though it's buckle rashed to shit from what the ad said was an FGN rep playing it on their tour gigs (it actually looks a LOT like a Knaggs or Nik Huber more than a Les Paul). The Sire Aldbridge drop-in should work on this as well
That’s good news.
Does this v3 are same pick up coil with v5
No they are different
squier classic vibe or this one?? help meeeee, i can't decide
Especially, after having seen what a subtly powerful tool a mid-sweep can be, I think it's a shame to turn people away from capabilities just because there's an extra knob or two.
yeah man, i dont understand that at all, and its quite alot of people saying that nonsense.
Sire only uses one pre-amp,. It's the same pre-amp in the $300 V3 as the $1500 V10dx.

The V3P version video please👆🙏👍
What do you mean with the preamp?
I have this bass
Yes the tuner is suck
But the bridge is ok
You forgot to mention rolled edge fret that makes you play comfortably and fast
Why do those tuners suck? Do they not stay in tune? Does Sweetwater fix them?
The video: five claws out of five.
[insert obligatory Kyle Kim interview nag]
hey look at that guy's bass
so...ya like jazz?
lol
what more is there to say?
Get Trev Wilkinson on the emails and get a jaco/geddy pair of icons out of his relic'd models over there at Vintage to demo for everyone.
They really do make some great bang/buck stuff, from all the demos. He even set the pickup on the Lemon Drop tribute reversed just like the original Greeny. I will probably have 4 guitars from Vintage, just to have them - the relic'd Lemon Drop, Tom Blug sig strat, and the two basses below.
I need to get office space. I have three instruments coming Monday and one of them is a big ass maple f-hole acoustic bass from unexpectedly Samick. Samick is actually turning out to be an interesting claim to mine, never realized just how deep this rabbithole goes - I'm mad because I can't buy some of the vintage ibby stuff I wanted after I decoded the serial numbers, Cor-Tek made a bunch of stuff in bursts for them before they settled deeply on PT Wildwood/Indonesia. I can't even begin to imagine what that B string sounds like, I'm getting goosebumps just from visualizing it. Filled with rubbery boomy mwah mwah goodness, oh so good. Like a buzzaw made of jello ripping through your soul.

Jaco Pastorius is my biggest inspiration on the bass. I'm playing a fretless V74MRJP Jaco replica bass by Vintage, which has fret markings, not frets.

If anyone lives in Aurora Colorado, there is a Peavey Unity, WHITE, PJ for 449 USD, pick up only at Music Go Round. I have a red one and I wanted to get it a sibling but I can't travel yet. Yes, I would road trip from Oregon to Colorado for that bass, hell yes I would (I just like road trips lol). Someone needs to home that beauty before it falls into the hands of an art student who thinks a white one solid piece bass would make great canvas and hang it on the wall forever. There are also a couple Koa ones for sale, but they still want like 1500 bucks for em, which I don't have or I'd probably just buy one, because, through neck koa bass.
Is there a place for custom pickguards for sire v3
Thomann
Hey - I'll play it at a gig !!!
Nicee
SLAPP LIKE NOW
LED lighting is terrible for causing humming. Shame, as it's great for everything else.
Thank you!
V3 gets 4 claws. I'm never seen a 5/5 claws
The Sire U5 got 5/5
Surprisingly, harley benton gets 5/5
5 knobs is too much for beginners? that just sounds lame. they have sooooo many more knobs in their pocket phones. Too much never prevented anyone from buying.
So the tuning is bad. That's more than enough info to make this a hard pass.
Funny thing about EQ and post production....
Sorry buddy nice not amazing no more
No need to apologize! Thanks Ram
Very cool review. Nice entry level axe for the dinero, I agree better value than Squier. Thanks Lobster! 🦞
