Knowing that people re-wrote history in order to elevate themselves and eliminate others is sometimes beyond what a person wants to understand. And realizing how effective and successful their mission was is down right frightening. Millions of people died believing misinformation about themselves and others.

My first MA is in Modern Middle Eastern studies and I had to take history courses as a result. Egypt was occupied by the British at this period and archaeology was very much unfortunately steeped in greed and politics in t his period. It was not uncommon that archaelogists were often intelligence agents or fortune hunters and it's depressing to think how much archaeology was really destroyed or outright plundered and survives to this day in some millionaire's home or corporation headquarters or a museum.

I remember in 1996 or 97 a mansion was being renovated in Scotland or England and the workers accidentally discovered a secret room and it was a storage room for ancient Egyptian artifacts that had been stolen when the original builder of the mansion lived in Egypt. Recently, back in August 2022, a famous architectural magazine, Architectural Digest, was caught photoshopping a hedge fund investor's home because it contained pillaged Khmer artifacts. But the idea that a major magazine actively photoshopped the stolen items and then downplayed their doing it. Architectural Digest should be shut down but it's alot more common than we realise and amazing how the public just free-passes this.

Stuff like this angers me, they plundered many sites and then continued to claim Africa had nothing while taking our artifacts. They did this in various Zimbabwe ruins too but, instead of having professional excavations and getting the artifacts into musuems the fools melted the gold and threw away the other artifacts that would have yielded a lot of information like soap stone art artifacts. This is why you can only find very few examples of the art of my ancestors.

Kingdoms like Zimbabwe were NOT civilizations. They were and advanced culture but they had not reached yet the stage to be classified as civilization.
Secondly, North Africa was NEVER part of “ African “ civilization. GEOGRAPHY DOES NOT EQUALS CULTURE OR CIVILIZATION. The fact that North Africa and regions below belong to African continent doesn’t mean they were your civilizations or your cultures.North Africa was ALWAYS part or related with Mediterranean world and Arabian peninsula.

As for your opinion regarding North Africa, 😂 if you want to exclude North Africa from the rest of the continent go ahead! Again where did I mention North Africa? @@admirekashiri9879 Ok . Now , I don’t know where do you get that “ they claim Africa didn’t create anything “ . I’ve been studying history since 2005 and nobody told me or I never read any serious book when it says “ African societies didn’t create anything “. Many people like you like to use these euphemism to make others sound like haters or whatever. Nobody is saying that. Western civilization is a civilization of ideas which always have been challenged and are evolving over time . What some Europeans have said 100 years ago about civilizations of African continent is NOT what western civilization is about. We’re constantly changing our view on worlds history.
You say “ they took our artifacts “ which is true. Unfortunately, invasion and colonialism go hand in hand with exploitation. But remember that in these museums where these artifacts are EVERYONE knows where they come from. Nobody is hiding anything today.Yes , I agree they should be returned back where they were taken but to argue that “ stolen artifacts are hidden history is ridiculous “. Some regions in the world suffered cultural loses which were much more devastating . The Balkans ( where I originally come from) was destroyed, looted , plowed by ottoman colonialism much more than most parts of Africa.

@@admirekashiri9879 I wasn’t referring to Nubia and Kush , and no they do not belong to Mediterranean world but they are connected with it due to Nile River through Egypt. Also ancient civilizations of Nile valley where heavily related with societies of arabian peninsula. The kingdom of ancient Ethiopia was founded by a semitic colony who was originally from Yemen. Now black Africans say that there was civilization there before semitic people were settled there, and honestly I don’t know if that is true .
Ancient Nubians were dark ( most likely Nilotic people) skin but not Egyptians. Many black people say that Egypt was influenced by Nubians, again I don’t know that either.
Many historians say Egypt, as a civilization was more connected with contemporary civilizations of ancient Middle East. I don’t know which one is true, about that.

It's sad but nothing can be done about it. While the controversy around where the Egyptians came from can be frustrating to a person who has studied the pre-dynastic civilizations, and thus has already found the answer. It's very likely that we would've seen the same level of destruction to Egyptian monuments from Europeans in denial that black africans/sub-saharan Africans built such a beautiful civilization. I'm just glad that not everything was completely wiped out and that the achievements of the Kushite civilization was able to reach public domain.

It was green and populated a clue to its population lay in places such as Uan Muhuggiag , present day Libya and Tassili Nadjer present day Algeria. These populations moved towards the Nile or southwards once the green belt receded. Interesting how there were signs of black Africans in what has now become the Sahara desert but little or no evidence of Asiatics are known south of the Sahara before or during these events.
Upper Egypt where Egyptian civilisation started was deep in the south and on the door step of tropical Africa and the Kerma cultures.

I hoping that they start doing the underwater excavations from those pyramids before the water table rises any more there and even more history and treasure is lost.
There are groups that are organizing diving expeditions under those pyramids to document and try to find things before the structures get damaged to the point where nothing is retrievable or before the water damages what is left to be found.....probably miles of painted walls that could tell books worth of info and who knows how many artifacts and even bodies that could be saved from eternal destruction, so to speak.
Its important to remember also that every culture has had its history plundered in one way or another. Even the "English" people were not the original inhabitants of England, those people were brutally subjugated. Its more than likely that the line my family came from was a "barbarian" line that was sought out for destruction and extermination. Our history was so despised that they didnt want to revere it as treasure or stick it in a museum either....it was destroyed as pagan and sub human.

I've been an avide player of Sid Meyers Civilisation franchise since its begining. Rescently with Civ VI, it dawn to me that there were quite a few african civilization compared to the rest of the world. Of course it could have been a simple case of software limitation but then, I went back and took a look the different edition of the game and notice that most of them were the same (Egypt Excluded).
Further more, all of those presented (Egypt Excluded) were from the medieval period. To me, this could not be right! Later on, I purchased a magazine (Atlas des Civilisations Disparues) in which there were an article about Zimbabwe and its "discoverer (can't remember the name). What infuriated me about that article was that "this guy" was so focused in proving it was from an ancient European civilization, or the lost tribe of Isreal, that he could not even fathom that local african peple could have build it.
Worst! He complained that he had to go through layers of "local trash" in order to excavate the site. It was at that moment that I realized how much we have lost, in stories, culture, arts and History. An History that would contradict many of the dogma taught in school. Was there other great african civilizations prior the middle ages? Probably! How many? What were they like? We will probably never know... European colonialisms made sure of that.

  • @ericdawson845
    @ericdawson845 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I appreciate your efforts however it would be good to be a bit more balanced IMHO. For example, the greatest looters of the Egyptian pyramids were the Egyptians themselves in ancient times, and they were similar to your subject in that they did not stop in the search for "treasures" that they might take advantage of. So this gentleman followed in a tradition of conquerors or dominant cultures - this is NOT to excuse such behavior
Also, it is a natural tendency in archaeology and probably the world as a whole that if you have seen 100,000 or a million or more artifacts, and then something new or purportedly new shows up, that you question it - in fact it is normal to question and that is part of a greater academic philosophy even if it may be in math or physics.
Also, there are many fine Yoruba and beautiful cultural items that have come down to us but they themselves have most certainly NOT been benign in their treatment of other cultures, and I will leave it like that.
But your points are taken with regards to the lack of respect for others or their cultural patrimony -how do the French have the Mona Lisa? Was it a French artist? (NO). Was it stolen? Yes. Or what about the Elgin marbles - my point is that this is a general phenomenon of which the subject was guilty, but he is not alone and their are plenty of others from disparate backgrounds, sadly including Africans as well that have committed such.
