Her family history is rather fascinating. There are people who are white who don't realize they have African American ancestry. Such is the sad history of racism where passing as white is the only way for lighter skinned people to avoid harassment and improve their socio-economic standing.
Creoles and Free People of Color often had good social standing but different factors led to us losing some of what we had. My ancestors were actually doing better than I am in this age. They were Tri-racial isolates (they were identified as Indians) who owned hundreds of acres of land. They lost it though due to some tribal issues.

There was some bigotry towards Johnny Cash, as in the south many called his first wife VIvian - Rosanne's mom Black; and she was distantly. She had very African American features and was a very beautiful lady. A documentary I watched speculated that one of the reasons Johnny Cash left her was she was holding back his career at the time, which is sad.
Vivian wasn't Black. She was Sicilian as am I, and we have Tunisian/Arab/North African/Middle Eastern ancestry. The African ancestry that came through Johnny Cash's mother, if I remember correctly. :)

R. Drake Sansone no the ancestry for Vivian states that her great grandmother was African American and White. Her father/ slave owner freed her and her eight siblings. She was then able to marry a white man because she was white passing and therefore all her children was listed as white. But the funny thing about genetics it sometimes jumps around and shows up later down the line.
This was wonderful and lovely Roseanne, one of my faves, was delighted to finally have this confirmation. And, yet, I think there are still folks in the family who insist that Johnny's first wife was just "italian."

God bless you! My Puerto Rican parents were very similar to your unfortunate situation. With my father being light skinned, life came somewhat easy for him to be tolerated by bigots and racists. My mother being dark skinned, on the other hand, meant that she got the s**t end of American life. It never stopped her from being herself. She just grew an extra toughness to her skin knowing the triple whammy of growing up a dark, Puerto Rican woman meant unfair judgements. My father was pretty similar to Johnny Cash in his attitudes toward fidelity. I've since learned to forgive the uncontrollable and leave his final judgment to God. Pretty unpopular opinion given the atheism that permeates society these days. I chose long ago to let God guide me without the structural bondage of a weekly church. God is everywhere, so why confine my love and faith to one place, race, or religion? I'm sure that you, Ms. Liberto, had a loving view of Johnny, even in your later years. The heart is funny that way. Your faith made you stronger, and giving 4 loving daughters to Johnny sure wasn't an easy task. May you and whoever else reads this know that you're always loved in the eyes of God. Thanks...

No less than 85% of Americans believe in god. I know lots of religious people like to pretend they are being oppressed, but that’s an incredible stretch in America.

They had four daughters, but the marriage was doomed because of Johnny's substance abuse along with some white people having a problem with him being married to a biracial woman. Vivian was a beautiful woman, but the mentality at that time believed in the drop belief that anyone with a little bit of black ancestry meant that person was black. Her father was a full-blooded deeply Italian Sicilian person and her mother was Irish and German. You had to go back almost to the beginning of the 18th century to find anybody who might’ve been completely black. That persons child centuries ago would’ve been biracial. Vivian was genetically and culturally whiter than most people and more Italian Sicilian than most people today in this country. So while nobody’s denying that there was remote and African ancestry it’s important to get her narrative correct. Because it directly impacts multi racial people -especially multi racial Italian people like myself.
