    Damn, the TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine port of the game is surprisingly good.

      The PC-Engine was almost as powerful as the genesis, its primary weakness is that there was only 1 background layer.

      @@glenndoiron9317 keep in mind that this is not stock PC engine here but super CD-rom² which, while not a massive upgrade, still adds CD music + 1 ADPCM channel + a lot more RAM. still, the mega drive has a significantly more powerful hardware (more complex CPU, better sprite and scrolling capabilities, richer sound setup and also 2 controller ports, RGB output, etc.) which is crazy considering that we talk about a giant of the electronic industry, NEC, that wasn't even alone but teamed up with hudson soft yet sega still outdid them and nintendo did too

      @@ryzmaker11 Sega outdid them? Sega Mega Drive completely failed in Japan and the PC Engine completely obliterated the 16 bit Sega machine and only the SNES was a match for the PC Engine. The PC engine could do parallax scrolling and had more colors than the Genesis. Why I am wasting my time with idiots....

  • @ryzmaker11
    @ryzmaker11 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    I always wanted a true great port of this game but sadly there is none. The 1989 Mega Drive port has co-op play, parallax scrollings and runs smoothly but it lacks 2 stages whereas the 1992 PC Engine Super CD-Rom² port has all the stages and plays more like the arcade but it lacks co-op, it lacks the parallax scrollings which really hurts the presentation and it has some awful loading times, including some 10 second blackouts just before each boss! :S
    The Master System port is actually interestiong. Just like Ghouls 'n Ghosts it has some exclusive content and is all-around solid for a third generation console.
    BTW there was a planned Mega-CD port called "Forgotten Worlds Deluxe" which would have more likely been the ultimate port but for some reasons it was canceled :(

      MD Forgotten Worlds really needed to be on a 6 Meg cart (or 8 if they wanted to get the voice overs between stages). Couldn't the PC Engine one have added one layer of parallax? OTOH pretty much all the computer versions are really broken. Sega Mark III actually looks OK for 8-bit, while the Amiga one is highly disappointing given that system's power.

    • @danmakuman
      @danmakuman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JudgmentStorm Well, it was an early release, if they waited another year to use a bigger rom it could've been better but maybe people's interest in the game had vanished by then. The PCE only can do 1 BG layer so they had to fake more with some tricks and sprites.

    • @ryzmaker11
      @ryzmaker11 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jasonlee7816 you tend to often complaint about sega not using bigger carts for this or that game but keep in mind that the memory cost was pretty high at the time (especially during the late 80s when there was a memory shortage at some point) and also that sega didn't have the same budget that some other companies might have back then so they really did very well all things considered although I'd agree that there are a few instances such as forgotten worlds right here where they could have used bigger carts (8 meg would have been enough here to deliver a port that came complete with the remaining 2 stages)

    The arcade original's nice. The 1st game to use the CPS board and it features the unique rotating button that allows for full 360° aiming.
    The micro computer versions lack the arcade's nifty presentation, plus the controls are positively borked to hell and back, severely lacking the precision of the arcade version. And the Speccy in particular, is a trainwreck that's almost adorable to look at thanks to its scrolling
    The more advanced PCs do their best to be like the arcade, but the controls still suck and they lag like a bitch.
    The SMS version does what it can to maintain the precise arcade controls by making the firing automatic in conjunction to making the 1 and 2 buttons aim, but the game is unbalanced, as the Lost Soldier is too slow compared to the enemies, meaning you're always *fucked* beyond belief. Not even the "Extra Joy" smart bomb can save you
    The Genesis version gets it all right in terms of playability, taking advantage of the 3 buttons of the main control pad for shooting and aiming, plus the music is quite accurate, barring the fact that channels lose their instruments for the sound effects. And the 2 player mode is intact. And maybe due to the lack of ROM memory on the cart, the visuals were hella simplified and lots of level geometry lose detail plus main details are cut to store space, like Silphie's bow and the dragon's body. Even 2 levels were cut from it
    And while the PC Engine lacks the co-op, it improves on many a thing, like the graphical details are kept (Except the layered scrolling), the music is higher quality thanks to being redbook audio, it even features the arcade voices and cutscenes without any hitches or cuts. And while it adopts the SMS control scheme as the PCE uses 2 main buttons, it works so much better as your speed is intact

    • @FLCL75
      @FLCL75 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      True. I think it was something about the way the Amstrad CPU and VDU alternated accessing the system bus. The Saint Dragon ports really highlight this difference.
      I don't know which is the pinnacle of CPC action games... is it Savage? Target Renegade? I remember Gryzor and Renegade were also considered both very good looking and worth playing at the time.
      Atari 8-bit line had the most colors of all the 8-bit micros, AFAIK. But no more than 3 or 4 unique colors per scanline, and hardware sprites were more limited than the newer C64, so you had to program software sprites to get comparable results.

    I always think the same, the only one thing that PCE needs to outperforms in quality most of arcades and systems of this era are the independent background scroll. Here another example , the sprites animation and colorful graphics are arcade quality . Also the ports are made from another developer and sometimes the budget , time and how much the company want to spend affect the final quality more than technical issues.

      UK/Euro developers frequently didn't have source code or even the graphics provided to them (so they're recreations rather than ports), many were made from scratch, some even made by recreating what they watched on a video recording of the game.. Console ports on the other hand were often made in-house, and it was common that some of the staff who worked on the original would be involved. Besides, none of the home computers of the era really have the capabilities to match the more advanced arcade boards of the time in terms of the numbers of sprites and colours they could throw around at 60fps.

This is one of their best games, with tight controls, crisp visuals and cool music throughout. @daishi5571 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wishusknight3009 The thing is the Amiga could easily handle multiple buttons. Even if you only count the direct wires to button connectors there are 3. But 2 of the 3 button connectors are in fact potentiometers, so could have multiple levels allowing for many buttons to be set up. Even with that said, the CD32 controller (which uses serial data like modern controllers) is compatible with all Amiga's and that had 8 buttons.
      I think the issues with buttons on controllers was most joysticks of the style (at that time) were not well setup for multiple buttons (even now some ppl argue that they prefer those style sticks to a more modern design) also more buttons equals more cost. If my memory is correct PC's had flight sticks that would have done the job (and compatible with Amiga using a converter) but they were extremely expensive. Lots of ppl bought the cheap, ubiquitous 1 button Atari joystick style, and games supported it because they didn't want to confuse ppl. There are games that did support 2 buttons, but if you are refining a game for 1 button you really can't change much.
      TLDR The reason the Amiga was stuck with limited buttons, is that people didn't buy joysticks/controllers with them, because companies didn't want to make them.

    The home computer ports, at least the ones to systems that used the standard Atari joystick, were ruined by bad controls. I appreciate that they wanted to remain faithful to the arcade version, which let you shoot in any direction, some consideration should have been given to how that would make the home versions virtually unplayable, since you can't move and shoot at the same time without turning.
    If I'd been in charge of designing the home ports, I would have made an optional alternate mode where the joystick just moves and fires and to rotate your aim, you use two keys on the keyboard. People with a joystick that they could stick to the desk, could use one hand on the stick and one hand on the keyboard. Or... A mode where the gun faces in whatever direction you move when the button is NOT pressed, but once you press and hold the button, it locks the gun into that position. Let the button up to change your aim, then hold it down to keep shooting in that direction while moving. It may not have matched the arcade's rotation mechanic, but it would have made the game a hell of a lot more playable.

    The Master System version is simply impressive considering the capabilities of the console.
    The Nec PCE-CD version is perfect thanks to its 16Bit graphics chip.
    The MegaDrive is not bad but according to the date, it would have been released at the beginning of the console's life, so we'll put it on a bad exploitation of the machine.
    The Amiga version is an excellent adaptation, impressive.
    Mention not bad for the C64 and the Atari.

    Let’s Compare Forgotten Worlds
    1: Arcade (1988)
    2: Amiga (1989)
    3: Atari St (1989)
    4: Sega Genesis (1989)
    5: Commodore 64 (1989)
    6: Amstrad Cpc (1989)
    7: Zx Spectrum (1989)
    8: Pc Dos (1991)
    9: Master System (1991)
    10: Turbografx-CD (1992)

    The genesis version was rushed, it came out years before the master system and pc engine cd version. If it came out in 1992 it (apart from the obvious cd soundtrack) would of kicked the pc engine to pieces. Still does in some ways in sprite numbers and animations apart from the rotating cogs, but you could hardly call it animation but then the master system by then had it so we can safely say it would of kicked.
