Question - How much more of a disadvantage is using a 5wt 9 foot rod over the more Euro dedicated 3wt 10+ rods? What would be the challenges I would encounter using a slightly less than optimal rod for Euro Nymphing?

Hey James - the 9' 5wt will certainly work but you mostly will lose the sensitivity of the grab with that shorter, stout rod. Also being able to reach that extra 18" is very helpful when fishing Pocket Water.

@M I DJ Torch - ditto what AC said. I use a 10.5' 3wt. when euro-nymphing and the extra reach and sensitivity make a definite difference. I also will throw on an indicator or even use it to throw dries if I don't have another pole handy. You have to monkey around with the leader system to throw the dries but not that big of a deal.

We like a 10'6" 3wt. rod for Euro Nymphing

@@acflyfishing1540 Won't a centre-pin reel(or the whole setup centrepinrod + reel) be more effective for this ? As we can have the fly keeping contact with the bottom?
      Wanted to know your thoughts.
      The advantages I see.
1.You can cast your setup (wallis cast)
2.have tight line with no slack line to create bird's nest
      3.Have longer drifts
Since I don't have much fly fishing experience maybe you could shed some light on why it is advantageous to use a fly setup for this.

@@MrSurfangler But with a centre pin setup, you lose the chief delight of fly fishing, which is the grace, delicacy, and beauty of the cast, presenting weightless flies, transferring power from the flex of the rod, through the fly line... oh wait. Why the hell do people nymph with fly rods?
