My two favorite two travel tips -There are a few exceptions to this one, but never eat in your hotel. Free breakfasts are an exception. And, my favorite - I'd much rather eat at a bar than drink at a table. Also, a great place to meet people.
In addition to packing a day early, I start writing a packing list well in advance. That way, if I forget something, I have *days* to remember that it's not on the list, not just a partial day. This isn't an issue when I'm packing the regular gear that I take on every trip. But it saves a lot of hassle when I'm bringing gear that I rarely take. (For example, remembering to pack the snorkeling mask cleaner and anti-fog gel on a snorkeling trip.)
Great timing. I'm going to my 50th high school reunion in June, and that's what has prompted me to buy new clothes and dress better, mostly thanks to your tips. A two-day road trip each way will be a big part of that, so I'll be going back to your videos for packing tips. Thanks, John!
I don't travel very, often, but I do take these tips seriously when traveling. Also, make sure to carry some sort of roadside assistance kit or first aid kit when traveling on the road. It helps out a lot if something unexpected happens when traveling.
Love road trips. My gf and I have done two this year. From St. Louis to Georgia and Louisiana. Michigan in June. Here’s a tip I learned the hard way. Don’t skimp on tires. Hugh quality tires make a huge difference.
Middle seat gets both arm rests ... but ... don't stick your elbows out into the other person's area. I've run into this issue sitting in the aisle seat.
In the US where we normally must remove our shoes at airport security, put your shoes first in line on the belt. You can put them back on while you wait for the other items. Bonus if you learn to stand on one foot and put them on, including tying. On a Japanese domestic flight the center seats were wider than the others; genius.
Another tip for international travelers. If you have TSA pre ☑️ it won’t be recognised most places abroad, so get ready to put all those liquids in a little bag for the return journey!
All great advice. I grew up in upstate NY, near the US/Canadian border. We would take a Sleeping bag. Put water bottle or 2, granola bars, warm socks & cheap thermal blanket & flashlight. Roll it up, pop it in trunk. I never used it, but I did rescue a mountain hiker before cell phones. It took a wile to get to a phone & help.
Pro Tip: Familiarize yourself with local traffic laws before you go somewhere and rent a car. For example - it's state law in Alaska that headlights must be turned on at all times and they will pull you over for having them off.
Good point. This is especially true when you have to drive on the other side of the road, such as Ireland. I'm kinda proud that in a week of driving around Ireland I only almost killed myself twice by looking the wrong direction when pulling into traffic. :)
My family had a cabin in Ocean Shores when I was a kid so went there all the time. Still head there at least once a year but now stay at the Quinault Beach Resort & Casino. I am a big fan of Carl Friedrik. I have the Carry-on, the Palissy 25 hour and the Hatton wallet all in matching chocolate. Thanks for the great videos.
I've re-discovered road trips this past year, 3 already for over 7000 miles. I pack too much, and keep whittling down what I THINK I need. My Jeep Gladiator only has so much space, and I do carry tools,, fluids and recovery gear in it's own case in the bed. As it is a Jeep, offroad time on these trips has been a hallmark of why I go. More to do, and lots of time to do it!
Great video John. We recently rented a Mustang GT convertible on the big Island. I didn't realize that it didn't have automatic headlights that go on when the sun goes down. Now that many car rental agencies are basically self service, this and how the convertible top actually functions, are now tips to consider asking about when renting. A V8 with the top down is a great drive! We had a blast!
Legend! Other than a flashlight, the things that come to mind are blanket, TP, water...what would you consider a good roadside kit? Not obvious stuff that should "come with the car" like the spare tire, jack, etc. Honest question.
Legend! Agree 💯 with you John, road trip over flying any day. Now you’ve got me jonesing for a trip….hopefully Florida in July. Thanks again for the good pre travel advice! Peace, health and happiness to you.
We used to have an annual meetup of Toyota MR2 owners at Ocean Shores. We'd show the cars in town and then head up Hwy 101 towards Quinault for some "spirited" driving then have lunch. Good times!
I've been to Ocean Shores! The last time was a spur of the moment weekday day trip from Seattle with my girlfriend at the time. We ditched our grad school classes that day, brought a couple big blankets and found some sand dunes to ensure privacy😅. Thank you for reminding me of this great day.
Elbows are a bit of a problem when flying. But I will say this it is so rude when the person behind you presses their knees into your seat causing an enormous discomfort on your back. Love your video! Now I'm gonna go and buy this carry on!
I own a 2017 BMW 540i and just got back from a trip to see family in W.V. (from N.J.). It's about a 6 1/2 hour drive, but I love every minute of it...well,mabey about 4 1/2 hours in,it does get a little tiring. Spend about 3 days there and then head back again. But I'm definitely a car guy and always love taking that trip. Great video and advice John.
Another tip: If you are staying at a Sheraton and it is available, pay the extra $20 and upgrade to a club level room. So worth it. Not only is it more secure (keyed elevator access only), it comes with a free hot breakfast buffet, dedicated computer work stations and free snacks and drinks throughout the day.
I agree with you about the Carl Frederik Scuderia Carry-on I bought one in February and have since used it on two trips. I love the color which made the choice of that model easy compared to the others in the line. The only issue I have with this one, as compared to the other carry-ons, is the lack of an exterior pouch for your lap top and other accessories. Usually I only like to handle one carry-on per trip but the lack of the pouch necessitates an additional backpack or briefcase.
Ocean Shores rocks! Great place. Regarding tires, make sure that there are no screws in your tires causing a continual leak! I might know someone who knows by experience this 😂😂.
Nice video! You can make a whole video on etiquette. For example, your flight pulls up to the gate, WHY for the love of god does everyone stand up in the aisle? One more, passing lane. Please pass then get back over, do not fall asleep in the passing lane. We should have public service announcements to remind everyone about that. I'll get off my soapbox now :-)
Sorry John, I've tried but I just can't pull off the sleeve roll. I get the science behind it, but to me it looks slovenly, unkempt and untidy. I can do short sleeves no problems, but not the ruffled up long sleeve. Am I wrong?
@5:20 is definitely a "tell me you're American without telling me you're American" moment. 50-60 miles of basically nothing in the middle of nowhere... and even the snatch of video was a dead straight road. You wouldn't manage that many miles in the UK without habitation and the nearest to straight is mainly on motorways.

Road trips. Especially in a group. The car community is the best community.

You’re welcome Steve! Have a great trip!

Isn't that pretty normal though? Most modern cars have running lights of some kind on the front, right?
Love your channel! I’m so excited for upcoming road trips!
Thank you!

Wise words from the Master.
Thanks Doug!

Generally, large and small Phillips and flat heads, adjustable wrench, medium channel locks, wire, tape, and gloves.
A secret for traveling - Amr Collection - Secrets Resorts and Spas! OH YEAH. Check it out.
Thanks John.

I also enjoy road trips and got my new SUV in December. Making plans for spring-summer...
Still think you should do a trip to Big Sur and Monterey for the beautiful scenery and wine tasting…
Definitely on the radar for this summer!
John, funny thing - I'm hitting a road trip 2 hours after your video, and you reminded me to put my new April 19th insurance card in the car! Thanks 👍
Ha! Glad I could help! :)
Grew up in Oregon, been all over the NW. But, I'm in AZ now and love it. The weather, that is.
Agreed!
That bag is interesting....never seen a bag with no zipper. I've always wondered if my zippered bag will ever pop! Cool that its related to F1, too!
It’s a good one!
Great job John as always! The wife and I live in Tacoma, so we’ve been to Ocean Shores countless times over the years.
Oh nice! Thanks for commenting John!
Don’t forget to be considerate-if someone is behind you on the plane, don’t put your seat back all the way down. Kindness first.
Absolutely! There’s no room as it is.
Been to Ocean Shores a few times. First time was in 2017 when I moved to Tacoma from Lincoln Nebraska. Always love the experience at Ocean Shores. 😎💯
It’s a fun getaway!
Ocean Shores rocks! Great place. Regarding tires, make sure that there are no screws in your tires causing a continual leak! I might know someone who knows by experience this 😂😂.
Ha! I’ve been there!
John! Come to Boston! #legend
I once had a game of wits with the aisle person from Vegas to Phx while I was in the middle seat. I had a dead arm by the end of the flight. 🤣
Haha!
Great info in general, but the vid gets the like easily because yes, the middle seat owns both arm rests...
Glad you agree! :)
All the cool guys go to Ocean Shores!
Always go aisle!
I travel for a living and I'm a window guy.
Thumbs up on the armrest policy - The guy in the middle seat gets both. Don't be a jerk.

Great video
You are just amazing ❤ we Love you ❤
Thank you!!
You covered travel tips by Auto and Airline, but what about info about traveling by TRAIN??
We have condos in ocean shores!
Oh nice! It’s a great spot!

We all like what we like, no worries!
Been to OS many times. Grew up east of Seattle and live in the San Juan Islands
Awesome Michael! Thanks for commenting!
More time at the airport equals more time complaining at the gate in case of delays and cancelations 😂
The Carl Friedrik link does not work. Sorry.
Interesting. I just checked it and it works fine. Maybe a glitch in the matrix?

Which is why road trips are so much better in the US. I can drive 6-8 hours there, whereas my 2 hour drive to Heathrow is turgid torture!
Yep! Lots of beautiful country here.
Another clue was his accent.
@@40OverFashion We have a lot of different landscapes here just on a smaller scale (no deserts however!)
