Released a stranded octopus that got stuck on the sand when the tide went out in the shallow water. After recovering, the octopus moved towards my left booties and placed one of its tentacles on my booties for some time before moving off.
Id say thats a confirmed thank
Yeah, I was skeptical coming in but what if it was just misattribution, but nope, that is a confirmed thank. Didn't act curious about the boot like it probably would've usually done, just stayed there for a bit and then let go and moved on.

There wasn't a uh, hey you're shade, you're a piling, what are you?, Can I eat you?.
It didn't feel like the Octopus thought he was something he wasn't nor did it feel like the Octopus was being "just" curious.
And, so the lingering touch with selfless intention .. lingering enough to be a clear I came here to do this. and here I am. I acknowledge you.

I love how you can see the color come back to him as he comes back to life.
It might have been his emotional state recovering.
It was more so that he was still in “I might be in danger” mode and was using his ability to camouflage himself for safety, which is a well known and observed behavior of octopus - and then when he realized he wasn’t in any danger he reverted back to a normal color.
What ever it was he was charging up.

I'm no marine specialist but it looks like he's adjusting his colours back into matching the surroundings.

i remember reading an interview with a guy that had an octopus in an aquarium. he recounted a story of him feeding his octopus with some shrimp one day (dead shrimp of course) and sitting down to read. after a few minutes something plopped on the table. turned out to be a slightly spoiled shrimp. when he looked over the octopus was making its way back to its aquarium to eat.
a few things to take note of.
1) the octopus clearly was able to escape any time but chose not to. most likely because food was being delivered to it and safety couldnt be higher.
2) it sorted through its pile of food and instantly located a less than good shrimp.
3) it broke out of its tank to litterally throw the spoiled food at its caretaker, clearly showing the emotion "spite" and the abstract thinking of knowing that the strange 2 legged one living outside water was feeding it.
4) the fact that it simply crawled back in its tank to munch away afterwards shows that the sole reason for it to leave the tank to begin with, was to spite the 2 legged one that dared bring it spoiled food.
this is a level of intelligence usually only credited to humans. imagine if we could give them the chance to talk

Reminds me of a video I saw where a small octopus reached out a tentacle to touch an outstretched human index finger, like the creation image in the Sistine Chapel. Only once it made contact, the octopus pulled back, apparently sensing just how *big* a creature it was in the presence of.

No we are different. Animals aren't made in the image of God and won't be held accountable for sin on Judgement day. We will, we have souls and God will judge our lives. Animals are at our beckoning as God has given man authority over the earth and creatures.

So incredibly touching and beautiful. You could see how distressed he was, it took a few minutes for him to regain his strength. This--this shows animals are not "things" under man's domain. They are living, breathing caring sentient beings that form relationships.
One cool thing about animals and relationships, did you know that a crow can remember a face after 17 years? Yeah that's kinda cool.

About emotional capacity with other animals. Just look at your pet (dog/cat): they can have joy, they can be annoyed, miserable, frustrated, frightened and even thankful, and communicate this quite clearly.
