The entire album is actually a concept album talking about the 13 steps of addiction or addressing addiction. "Blue" is talking about how when we know someone who is addicted to drugs we tend to ignore it because its uncomfortable to confront someone who is addicted to drugs, until they die or "turn blue" and then we say we wish could have done something.
The program is actually 12 steps. The 13th Step, or 13th Stepping, is when you have a relationship with another user within the program. It's frowned upon as two addicts dating usually leads to relapse. It _rarely_ works out for either party involved
@@joehynes5452 i didn't know that. i just started with NA about a month ago. guess that's relevant to me. i better keep my eyes in check. i was thinking the thirteenth step was relapse. Thx for the info
@@johnnyblue9120 That's one of their weaker songs, imo. And even if they got to all of APC's catalog eventually, it would be a while until they got to some of the stronger ones w/out a select song approach.
Maybe they could react to both "Pet" and "Counting Bodies Like Sheep To The Rhythm Of The War Drums" in the same sitting. They can compare the alternative side of APC with the industrial side of APC.
When a family member is trying to have a conversation but you’re too jacked up to converse. They pretend you’re not high, I pretend I’m not high, and we just have a meaningless conversation soon to be forgotten forever. Blue. 🤘🙁
Well done guys. One of my all time favourite albums! I bought this when I was 17 and I’m 34 now and the album still holds up. Maynard always gets you right in the feels.
In case you didn't know, the lyrics and melodies on this album were written while MJK was on the Lateralus tour. maybe that's where the inspiration came from
I know y'all enjoy going through all the works of Maynard, but I have a suggestion. Billy Howerdel, the guitarist of APC, has a solo album called "Keep Telling Myself It's Alright" under the name Ashes Divide, and you should totally check it out. I personally like every song on it, but some took time to grow on me. I'd most recommend The Stone, Stripped Away, Enemies, and Denial Waits. Edit: Side note, the music video for The Stone is dope.
This is my favorite APC album. When you finish reacting to all of these, you need to listen to the entire album in one sitting. It’s a total vibe and you’ll be in another place.
I use to think the lyrics to the chorus was "Crawling out the mushies, turning blue, such a lovely colour for you"... for years i thought this song was about tripping balls on blue mushrooms and i still stand by this.
This is the first time I have listened to you guys, think your great. Funny thing, When I woke up this morning, walked down the hall, cought a fly with my nose, not on purpose by the way, grabbed my phone typed in blue by A Perfect Circle. Now here we are. You should have a listen to Smile Empty Soul, Any of their albums. I got sooo lucky and got to meet them after a show. They are so down to earth and was really nice to talk to.
Thirteenth Step is a reference to a person who has had a long term of sobriety that preys upon the weak and powerless who are just entering the program, usually for sexual advances. Typical Maynard dry comedic shade being thrown out.
So happy you are doing MJK stuff, I've been a big tool fan since the 90s, but never journeyed into the other MJK stuff, so I am listening to most of it for the first time with you. Thanks for the endless hours of videos!
I’m not a vet, I’m going to check his book out, when I googled if he wrote a book, through that I learned that Mr. Maynard is a vet 💯 thank you for your service, I have 2 friends from childhood, my best friend was in the army. Thank you for your service. ✌️✌️ Blues music rocks 🔥
I feel like it’s about addiction. Him talking to himself in the mirror until he’s blue in the face. Him telling himself “ you need to stop this but I ‘ I don’t want to know’ the pain I’ve brought upon the people I love” and yet he keeps recycling the same behavior. Yes, this is very personal for me but they are Just my thoughts. Thanks
To add to this, when he says “she“. I think he’s referring to his mother. I think, in his mind, he’s having a conversation with his mom. Like, what would she say!? That’s the point of view I’m seeing it as.... as well
The Noose and Gravity. A MUST. Also! Maynard did a song with Milla Jovovich (resident evil movies, leeloo from fifth element) called "The Mission (M is for Milla)"
This song always reminds me of that scene in Breaking Bad where Walter is watching Jesse's girl die of an OD; watching her turn blue... I had this album when it came out so I heard this long before BB came out so when that show came that's the song that popped into my head when I seen that scene. Appreciate the react. Those exit sounds are the beginning of the next song.... I have heard that people like this album better than the 1st album before, but I don't get it. This album is good, but Mer De Noms is one of the most brilliant and beautiful albums ever recorded. He writes his lyrics to suit the song. If it calls for rhyming, he will rhyme. If not he will he will make it fit the song. His ex (which he has a song about on the first album, Brena) was (supposedly) a big pill popper.
Dudes their first album was their best and one of the best albums of all time.. start from the beginning track 1 the Hollow on ‘Mer De Noms’ thank me later
The impressive part is the ability of Maynard to hop from genre to genre, 💯 the longevity of the bands TT show cases, is mind blowing, you guys have been making music forever, 🔥🔥🔥that dudes truly a God same to his band mates, first time I’ve heard that song, when I think and hear his different bands the music is next level spiritual, very deep, my cats name is Blue, 🤣 I call him bluebird, This song and breakdown you did, was great. 13th step wait till u hit tha 22nd step Maynard the man🤘🤘hi 🔥🔥🔥🔥
APC has a greatest hits dvd called aMotion which has a rare commentary by Maynard where he discusses the meanings of the all of the songs on it. Totally worth checking out.

Love that song guys. You guys REALLY NEED to get back into ANTHRAX!!!! Need to do Intro to Reality and Belly of the Beast. 2 different songs, that run into each other. Perfect song for an introduction. Also good are Breathing Lightning and Suzerain. Please guy, please do these!!!!!
As I’ve seen it put, Tool is Maynard’s brain, A Perfect Circle is his heart, and Puscifer is his privates. Like Tool, A Perfect Circle has a lot of good ones. But also peep Potions by Puscifer with Trent Reznor
B.E.A.utiful song fellas. So much more coming also, really excited for the APC reactions specifically. I will be back to Toolgating soon, miss chatting with you folks. Been too crazy at work and home lately.
That album at 5:04 was definitely pushed lol. Have you guys considered to do a ghost special episode? Bring an EVP recorder or a spirit box and try to communicate? maybe your ghost friend has a music taste too lol!
"Blue" because when someone dies the corpse turns "blueish" over time. The song is about ignoring signals to pretend that everything is alright "just ignore the smoke (where there's smoke, there"s fire) and smile". It's about someone who refuses to confront a close one who's slowly decaying because of drug addiction or maybe it's about someone who is so high on drugs that he sees the O.D'ed body of the girl he was doing drugs with and he's like "Blue, such a perfect color for you". Basically can't see/confront reality because of drugs or because it's safer that way.
Here is the order I would recommend listening to the songs in: • A Stranger • The Outsider • The Package • Vanishing • Weak and Powerless • Blue • Passive (from Emotive, but belongs on this album) • Gravity • The Nurse Who Loved Me • The Noose This is just my interpretation: I believe it tells the story of someone who not only doesn't do drugs, but looks down at people who do, falling in love at first sight for a woman who is addicted to heroin. Out of love he at first tries to ignore the problem, and then confronts her about it, and then succumbs to it himself becoming an addict (A Stranger through Weak and Powerless). Now we hear about his own journey down the rabbit hole and how he hates everything about the addiction, but isn't strong enough (or doesn't want to) fight it. Eventually, while shooting up with his beloved, he is too high to realize that she is overdosing (Blue). He only realizes what has happened when the doctor tells him that she is dead (Passive), and he is furious at her for not only leaving him, but leaving him with an addiction he didn't want, she caused, and he can't overcome. After her death, he finally hits bottom and pleads for help (Gravity) and finds himself rehab where he still fails (The Nurse Who Loved Me). Finally, he goes through a 12-step program and overcomes his addiction seemingly to set things right in his life again... But he just can't shake his own demons, and although he is sober, he hates himself and can never forgive himself for letting her die and for blaming her for everything (The Noose).

As far as live, check out anything from their Stone and Echo: Live At Red Rocks videos. My favorite there is By And Down. lol I should have read this before I posted almost the exact same thing.

"The Noose" should be next when you do APC, it's a personal favourite of mine.

Can’t wait to see you guys do The Package off of this album. It’s amazing
Oh thank God! I started my MJK journey just before the Trash Talkers and I've been DYING for them to get to Blue...it's a perfect color for you...
lol
Pet would be the perfect follow-up to this song, which is downbeat (not saying that's bad per se).
Vanishing is the following track. Come on man lol

I love Pet (and Counting Bodies) but I never understood how it fits in with the rest of the album.
The nurse who loved me off this album is one of my go to songs to just chill. Really hope you guys check it out one of these days.
It’s actually a Failure cover. If you liked it, check out the album Fantastic Planet by Failure; a masterpiece.
Lullaby is a really good one for that too
Their cover of when the levees break by led zeppelin is really really good
Very nice vibe
The live version is amazing.
My lord, holey molley, shit balls we got one here. Banger it's going to be. Chee.
Amazing song! Amazing album! Please do "Pet" next, you guys will love it. See the tribe at 5! 🤘❤

Pet is awesome. Yes!
This whole album is awesome. Can’t wait to see this reaction 🤘🏼

@@that.tool.chick0 I can see that. I guess I’ve always just seen the denial of the family of an addict in this song. Isn’t music awesome?
Gravity, The Package and The Outsider are great songs from this album
Amazing song. Can't wait to hear the rest of this album and mer de nom.
13th step is a concept album about addiction. Each song is great on its own, but the album should be listened to start to end at least once.

The Mission by Puscifer features the actress Milla Jovovich singing
M is for milla
Resident Evil was amazing due to her talent, imo. Can't wait for the next one in September, I think.
This is one of the few songs where the remixes are just as exceptional as the original. The Bird Shake mix is in every APC playlist I make.
I love that. "Every" cause you've made multiple
What's going awn everybody!? The Trash Talkers now have a Facebook group, come and join the fun.

I think that's exactly what it's about. If you follow it up with "Passive", it makes a lot of sense.
