The RTS history section is a little bit all over the place. C&C, Warcraft 2, and Red Alert popularized RTS in 1995-1996. By the time Age of Empires came out in 1997, everyone was already making RTS. Total Annihilation, KKnD, Dark Reign, Myth: The Fallen Lords, Seven Kingdoms, all came out in 1997 chasing the trend set by earlier titles, not Age of Empires. The original Fallout games and Diablo came from an RPG lineage, and RTS had split from RPG way before those came out in 1997, with titles like Herzog Zwei in 1988 and Dune 2 in 1992.
That's fair. I guess it was a bit of a blind spot for me since I was born in the early '90s, but I do feel like Age of Empires was the quintessential rts of its era. As far as Fallout in Diablo, I was just making a comparison to technical appearance not genre.
I hope so, I had so much fun with Age back in the day. My older brother taught me how to play AOE 2 and now I"m teaching my son how to play AOE 2 and AOE 4.This game is going through generations now.
I started playing the Age of the Ring mod for BFME2 and it’s amazing. I think there’s definitely an audience for these types of games, especially since we’ve been moving towards more single player experiences. Maybe it’ll be easier to program good AI too that’s better and noch just cheats to be more difficult
My first ever RTS experience was around 2007 when I purchased Rise of Nations at EB Games for $20. Before that I was strictly a console gamer, but after playing RoN I was hooked. I would go on to play Sins of the Solar Empire, Homeworld, Rise of Legends (Meh!) and so on. In the end, I just went back to console and TBS games like FFT and Tactics Ogre. The only RTS I’ve been playing for the past five years and still get a lot of enjoyment is Rusted Warfare on iOS and Steam. The graphics may not appeal to some gamers of the genre, but the offerings by way of maps, units and mods makes the game very fun IMO.
Yes they are :) and im glad about it, although the most popular are remakes of old games, we have some interesting innovations like Stormgate, zero space, tempest rising and othes i cant remind now.
RTS is what got me into PC video games in the early 2000s and I played way too much of those games (RA2, SC1, WC3, AoM, AoE2, RoN) than I probably should've back in the college dorm. As much as I would like it to be the case, sadly, classics like AoMs being remade, reforged, retold, re-whatever ... is no sign that RTS as a genre is coming back, but rather the contrary: it is a thing of yesterday and companies are merely salvaging whatever nostalgic value there is in the ruins of a bygone genre. If RTS is trully coming back then we would be seeing a lot more new titles being announced and released, instead of old gems being exhumed and polished to be sold again.
@@dutchritz Hmm, that makes sense. I wasn't paying attention to the new ones other than Storm Gate and Tempest Rising, which seem to be forever under development lol.
If gamespeed is not double, of what the true Era of RTS was .. then yea - maybe it's 'returning', and can be interesting for actually new players to enjoy, in a steady balanced paced. : )
Hmm I'll reserve my enthusiasm when we have something tangeable. We've been burned too many times with our favorite titles and their remakes. AoE is more the exception. But W3 reforged was real sh*t. Cnc has been dead for more then a decade with the exception of cnc remasterd which was nice but more and old product with some fresh paint. The last company of heroes and total war were dissapointing too.
The lack of RTS games being popular has dumbed down new gamers in the past 10 years. Its probably easy to tell someone who has played RTS games due being able to multitask and react better than non rts gamers that have only played mmo's or mobas. So here hoping with Stormgate, AOM, and even Sins of a Solar Empire 2 releasing this year. RTS games can make a come back.
You're telling me being able to build an entire apartment complex that is fully compliant with San Francisco building code in less than 30 seconds in Fortnite is not the truest mark of gaming skill?
People can barely press a single input to dodge an attack successfully. Imagine them managing resources, and units at a micro and macro scale. RTS will never come back.
There wasn't really any significant/mainstream RTS since the peak of StarCraft 2 in like 2011-2013. Probably because nothing came close to SC2 in terms of mechanics and fun. That had to die so that others may live. Also MOBAs kind of scratched a similar itch for the average gamer, with a much easier learning curve.
I know this video isn't a true history lesson but to say the age of empires games popularized the genre seems a little off to me. Less people played warcraft and command and conquer but they were pretty known for the era, and Im pretty sure StarCraft 1 is the one that popularized the genre. It had sold more copies of the game back in the day(Original version of StarCraft sold over 5 million and the Original version of Age of Empires 2 sold over 2 Million before all the DE edition, hd, etc.). Not to attack Age of Empires 2 at all, nowadays that game has a even stronger fanbase now then Starcraft and that's great.
The games that made RTS big were Warcraft 2 and Starcraft. Then also age of empires but you cant make a video about RTS and ignore that and say that Age of Empires was first.
1:58 What is this frame taken out of context and used by right-wingers to spread lies and false narratives doing in a video about RTS games? Pictures with Neckbeards are better if one wants to mock pretentiousness.
I don't exactly know what that would even look like in a remake of a game like this... It generally looks like a graphical and animation update more than anything.
@@dutchritz i mean it's always up and down. there are some promising signs, but idk that there's that much to take away for it. whatever the case, it's not going to go away, so not to worry

we surrender, move a little closer.
making an RTS game that need a NASA Pc should be illegal tho
Was not Supreme Commaner 1 extremely demanding back in 2007?
hope so
I am so excited for this, I so hope it is done well. I am totes getting this as it releases.

I cannot stress how good supcom and faf are! still going strong and sanctuary coming late next year id say

I saw a ton of new ones at the PC Gaming show this year, but I don't know if they are hyped up enough by interested parties...

Overall kinda yes, its great, most subgenres have something decent in the pipeline !
Have you played the other homeworlds? They're pretty awesome
I have not, but I should definitely pick up a few more RTS games... It's been a while
Why did "prostagma" become a meme in Age of Mythology? Who or where did this meme originate from?
Probably since it was just such a frequent audio cue that people referenced it a lot.
One of the first games that I played for 6+ hours daily 😂😂 it was so epic
I loved the story and gameplay so much as a kid!

I think you're right. SC2 was massive!
they have already returned unless you are living in a cave, there's been a ton of recent releases

I conflated the growing popularity of AOE games with its initial success, you are right.
The games that made RTS big were Warcraft 2 and Starcraft. Then also age of empires but you cant make a video about RTS and ignore that and say that Age of Empires was first.
Command & Conquer, lotophage
You are right about Warcraft 2. I would say Age of Empires was more popular than Starcraft though, at least originally.
man i'm so bad at RTS games lmaoo

Hmmm interesting business simulation
