- Welcome to my BHTHK2019 project. It was a quick 6 day trip to Hong Kong but I got lots of content. I'm finally rolling out the videos and my visit to Champagne Court is the obvious choice to start. As per normal I always bump into really interesting and friendly people at this vintage camera mecca of Asia. Thanks for everyone who I met and sorry for all those who I couldn't get on camera due to time constraints.

He is the ultimate cool uncle!! Imagine he was your grandfather or father or uncle? That would be nuts. But his kids have no interest in cameras.....
No kidding… that would be awesome… “Uncle, can I borrow the dual stroke black M3…it´s for a school project”, I am not really into rangefinders, but anyway.
Well it would be cool to see Champagne court in person someday.
Anyway I love David´s quote from 2015 (a lite reworked): “Digital is McDonald´s, film is the private kitchen”.

That was the most beautiful shop I've ever seen
It use to be 3 times bigger in the past, and he has 3 off-site storage units with more stock. He says what you see is only 10% of his collection.

Mr. Chan is lifegoals in perpetuity.
He hustled when he was young, and he said he did struggle at first. Now he owns multiple units at the mall and rents out to other retailers. That’s why he doesn’t need to sell his ‘master pieces’. He just talks with customers and has tea time :-)
@@bigheadtaco I'm sort of teetering, I'll either have an equable decade to find a fresh clothier to keep me supplied with waistcoats for the remainder. or I'll have a proper knee injury and just embrace the Joey Washington pops swagger.

@@bigheadtaco despite walking round the block umpteen times we failed to find David Chan's shop, or even champagne court for that matter. Gutted 😕 Still in the area having lunch though
@Vincent Tam cheers Vincent. We were in that area for ages but just couldn't find it 😕 No worries though, we're going to be in Tokyo in a couple of weeks for a week so plenty of opportunity to see camera stuff 😀

Yes he is. Not many left of his generation who's still so passionate about film cameras...
Last month I had a stopover in Hong Kong so rushed to get to see Mr Chan. I thought that his shop closed at 8pm. I got lost on the way and finally got there at 7:55pm thinking that at least I could get to see him and his shop and spend 5 minutes there, however most of the shops were closed included his!!! I'll get there one day.
Champagne court looks like paradise, but I’d go broke in a heartbeat 😂 Loved this video!
Easy to blow money there. Lots of Minolta stuff in Hong Kong, not too expensive either except for the really rare MC lenses

Yes there’s lots to learn about camera design and function. It’s the foundation of what digital photography is today. I actually believe much of the older cameras have way more innovation than current digital cameras with their boring design and copy-cat features. No innovation, creativity or risk-taking at all. Digital photography is truly boring, with a few exceptions.

Yes that's the fun part of these tours, I never know who I'm going to meet. I don't pre-plan these visits. I always just drop in and see who I meet.

Wow, I know where I'm going when I'm in HK next! I'm at the used stores in Shinjuku all the time, and Shanghai every once in a while, but never been to Champagne Court!
Sim City in Mong Kok is also good, although Champagne Court specializes in older film cameras.

Visited HK and Japan over the last three weeks. Visited Campaign Court during the last week of February 2019 - Mr Chan store was closed! There are some notices saying that he has opened a new store on HK island from Kowloon - very disappointed as this was my last day in HK. Was looking to purchase some items for my Leica IIIf

I hope to be passing through HK later this spring on my way to Beijing. Although I’ve been to HK before, your videos have always given me the incentive to explore once again the 'bowels' of Tsim Tsa Shui and the surrounding areas. Great city!
BTW, which hotel do you stay in when there, or do you stay with friends and/or family? I’ve stayed at the Imperial Hotel and The Salisbury YMCA near Nathan Road in the past - a number of years ago, though. Any suggestions other than these?

@@bigheadtaco yes, probably, but France and England where also not doing bad things back in the days. I've tried to figure out from an image out of one of your previous videos, but the 6x9's where seen from the bottom . It's not a Voigtländer Bessa and not a Zeiss Ikon either.
Last time I went there they weren’t open.... I think it was Sunday or Saturday..
Closed Sundays and opens late Saturdays.

Because he's been selling for 50-60 years and has made his money. He's basically retired and his store is a museum... most of the other shops around him are renting space from him. He also collects cars, watches, pens and is the chairman of the antique society of Hong Kong.... he doesn't need to work.

As I mentioned in the video, he no longer has to sell cameras. He’s made all his money and his store is more a museum than a camera store. That’s good for us since he takes his time talking to you. He doesn’t care if you buy from him or not...
He has other business,cars,paintings,etc
Some of his thoughts are so outdated.
Yes, but do you blame him? What would his store be like if it was half digital cameras? He’d be out of business or he’d have to be hustling outdated and worthless digital gear in his 70s. He’s smart to stick with cameras that hold their value. Let the young hustlers focus on digital gear.
I shoot with a Leica IIIb and it looks just the one that Mr Chang was holding on his left. I am so much in love with this camera, so much fun shooting with it.

Great video as always man. I was in HK late December and visited champagne court. Walked into David's shop to browse but I was a bit shy about conversing with him in length. It was a cool experience nonetheless to see him in person. Cheers!
Don’t be shy. He’s there so he can talk to people. What else is he going to do? He doesn’t drink, he doesn’t gamble, he just likes working and talking about cameras :-)

It's like camra heaven , would be a big turn off if you wanted to buy a Nikon F3 .... and turned around and said no, mean while he's got 3 of them brand new in a box but the woman that has been working for him for 30 years if he's not there she'll sell you one LOL

Lots of cool vintage signs in Hong Kong, not just camera brands.
I like to think people buying Mr Chan's cameras will put hundreds of rolls through and take thousands of pictures, and carry them everywhere. I fear they'll sit on a shelf or be brought out as male jewellery. A camera was made to take photographs.
I’ve seen international clients come in and buy very specific items from him, super expensive and collectable. But I’ve also seen shooters come in and immediately mount a lens and start shooting.
