Hey everybody.
In this video I restore a japanese kitchen knife. The shape and thickness I would say it is a usuba knife. Mainly this knife is used in the kitchen for vegetables. I received it from a restaurant. In the restaurant, it was used for more than 30 years, until the tang of the knife has rusted off. So once again I try to go from trash to treasure.
I start the restoration of the japanese knife by removing the rust. First with the wire brush and then with electrolysis. Then I weld on a new tang When welding, I put point over point and always check the temperature, because the knife itself must not get hot, because otherwise it loses the hardening.
After welding, I file the weld smooth and grind the knife from 120 to grit size 3000.
I then make the new handle from two types of wood: bloodwood and ebony. Two wonderfully hard and colorful woods that create a dramatic overall look. It is important to me that the handle reflects the aggressiveness of the shape of the blade.
Since the two hardwoods are very difficult to shape, I decide to make a traditional Wa-Handle. This takes the tang in the core in a piece of softwood, which is glued into the hardwood. The softwood can be perfectly fitted to the tang using a special burning technique.
I enhance the intesive color combination of the handle with stainless steel spacers and an exciting grinding of the handle. I finish the handle with linseed oil and join the handle and tang.
In the end I grind it razor sharp and of course test it.
This time I test a "Laacher Klosterbier" a beer which is a little too bitter for my taste and rather narrow in the bandwidth of the taste.
I hope you have once again fun with the restoration video.

One of the best restoration channels and one of the few who knows what hes doing! top quality work... you deserve so much more views.. hope the youtube-algorithm will be soon on your side!
Thank you very much Sören. Could read this comment all day long 😊
Agreed. This channel should have 100k subs. It's the absolute best.
Also I love your ratings on that beer😅 ”Jägermeisterish” and ”Medicine”😅
You weren't kidding on the magical transformation when you used the linseed oil. That red was gorgeous from the bloodwood. Nicely done all the way around. You've always been a good videographer but this was really outstanding. Thank you for this, it was very enjoyable.
I have to say the level and quality of your work has become excellent, I have followed you from your humble beginnings and admire your work ethic, you should be proud.
Thank you Robert. It's nice to know you still visit my channel
@@NTRprojects it's true! you'll have to rename yourself Really Rather Good Restorations at this rate
Awesome tang recovery 😊👍🏻
Thank you my friend!
I love that you left the creators name intact. That is classy.
An amazing restoration! The handle is beautiful!
An advice about the sharpening process
1. the stones you’re using are soaking stones, they should be soak in water for about 15 min (until there is no more bubbles coming out on them)
2. Try to use the whole stone when sharpening
3. For more consistent angle, the stones should be flat, you can flatten them by rubbing them on a sand paper (around 150-300 grit)
That is placed on a flat surface, it will Also help to remove the “clocked” surface of the stones, a thing that will make the stones perform better.
Great advice!
You are at the top with My Mechanics and Hand Tool Rescue!
Some Japanese craftsman is smiling from wherever he is, as he sees the beautiful restoration you did of the knife he created.
You did the Master proud!
A handle worthy of the spirit of Japanese art
Gerade beim Griff trennt sich die Spreu vom Weizen... Großartig gemacht!
I appreciate the side by side showing the progress of sanding
I think I have never seen such a beautiful handle, perfect wood choice. Brilliant work my friend, I loved the video!
Thank you my friend and once again thank you for the help with translation
@@NTRprojects You are very welcome mate ✌🏻
I’m only 20 seconds in, and I would like to recommend a shot of you drinking the beer of choice in the next intro clip 🍻
The handle is beautiful and the blade is perfect ❤
I used to watch old episodes of "The Office" on repeat, now I'm hooked on these restorations! This knife is art when you're finished with it.
That's what she said ☺️
So beautiul, a masterpiece, thank you
Love the handle. Wasnt sure about the stainless inserts , but it turned out beautifull
richtig gut produziertes Video, hat viel Spass gemacht Dieses anzusehen
Nice job respecting the original makers' mark. Also nice job on your own handle design. I like it a lot
The handle, the work, the video are better than perfect. Everything is brilliant, imaginative and artistic.
Der Griff ist ein Meisterwerk im Design!
Brilliant job, love the handle. I've never seen the beeswax method for fixing a handle before , thanks 👍👌
That handle! The wood is just gorgeous!
Well done, sir.
excellent result. work of art.
The whole work is truly excellent but the handle is out of this world!!! Speechless ❤❤❤👏👏👏
Impressive! The design of the handle was complex, yet it kept its usefulness.
.....lookin' great, nice work, keep safe...
Beautiful work, I love how the knife turned out. A perfect rescue restoration.
You're my favorite restorationist. Your work is impeccable
Beautiful!
Sehr schöne Arbeit. Ist wirklich gut geworden.
Fantastic!
You still may want to retemper the blade edge later on. I've never worked on a knife like that, so I'm not exactly sure.
That is a very interesting blade. Quite unique and your choice of materials for the handle is very beautiful.
Another fantastic video sir thanks. Tom.
Beautiful restoration! I absolutely love the choice of wood for the handle!
You are a perfectionist, superb, wonderfull, I follow all your restorations, It's perfect.
Truly lovely - restoration, and new handle, both.
Beautiful. Darlington, South Carolina USA
Excellent recovery, and amazing woodwork....But the NO TO WAR made this the perfect video. Peace to us all my friend.
Agree. Make restorations, not war. 😄✌️🕊️
I try to start my day with a positive YT video with my coffee.
This is going to be a good day. Beautiful work.
A great restoration resulting in a beautiful knife. I particularly like the handle.
Thank you Michael
The wood combinations it's lovely but the handle shape is astonishing
Very nice, indeed
Wish I would have used those pins on my wa handles, I have had to slow way down on shaping/grinding my handles because my stainless spacers were getting too hot and activating the epoxy and separating. I love the wood pairing and the shapes and angles, keep up the good work.
Big fan sir
The handle is beautiful
So, from the markings, this beauty was specially made for someone... which means she deserved the special treatment you gave her. Absolutely stunning handle. I was happy you preserved the maker's marks too.
Very nice restoration
Thanks Larry
Great work and finish!
Glad to hear that you liked it
Japanese artisan craft of knives and swords is still honoured today; some descendants of the knife you restored would be proud!
Very nice Work and Video wieder ein sehr schönes Ergebnis weiter so immer Hammer Videos 👍❤️👍❤️⭐
Amazing restoration!
Amazingly sharp. Nice job.
You did your usual excellent job. I just love watching you.
amazing work! the result is awesome
Good, you have been watching the knife repair channel. Love the result.
One thing I have noticed that makes your channel stand out is the sanding. You take something as boring as boring can be and you show the differences between the grits and it makes it super interesting! Keep it up.
Excellent restoration. You are a true Master Maker/Restorer. Well done.
very beautiful knife. awesome work
Amazing restoration. Beautiful knife and remarkable handle.
GENIAL. Una gran restauración, y el mango...precioso 🥂🏅🎖️🏆😀
I would LOVE to have this knife! Amazing work!

Simply beautiful! Pretty much the best handle yet! Excellent choice of materials Dr. 👍👍👍. Thank you very much. 😎
Good story and save, great videography! Loved the care and detail of the handle and traditional way of attaching it! Great save on the tang without messing up the temper. Thanks for another great save and story!
That handle is incredible. You make everything look effortless. Thanks for sharing!
I missed this video… not sure how, but I missed it. Wonderfully done, sir- the knife and video production. Thanks for the video. Very enjoyable to watch. Love your content.
Amazing work! That definitely deserved a better beer.
Nice job, very sympathetic handle design and really striking colour contrasts. Thanks !
Nice that you were able to save that blade! I’m not sure but I think that the Japanese believe that a quenched blade has a soul. 👍
Omg. That’s one cool knife. Excellent job Dr. beer.🗜️🔩🛠️🔨🔧⛏️⚙️👍
That's splendid. I wonder about the maker and how old the knife is. There's something magical about reaching into the past and bringing something back in this way. Thank you.
Would be very interested too. Maybe someone will be able to give us this info
OMG the linseed oil reveal! :D AMAZING!
13:21 no its not great wood combination
its the greatest wood combination 😎💯
beautiful job!!
I love the handle shape and wood combinations. Well done, and a great find, too.
Outstanding Job!!!!!!!!!!! Amazing handle geometry, and great wood choice!
Glad to hear that you liked it so much
Beautiful.
Splendid restoration, nice version of the octagonal handle shape. Probably good for bigger hands. The blade is a nakiri as it is a double-bevel, an usuba has a asymmetrical single-bevel.
Lovely job. I would love to own that knife.
I am totally in love with that beautiful Blood Wood! I never would have thought that wax would be capable of gluing anything, so I learned something new today!
I love how much you cared about that handle👌🏻
Wonderful as always! I didn't get a notification of this upload so missed it? No blue dot which is odd? I'll click the bell just in case 🧡
R E S P E C T ! ! !
a beautiful nakiri or vegetable knife. super thin and excellent steel. a great save.
Thank you Lance. So what's the exact difference between a nakiri and a usuba knife
Usubas are single bevel knives. Good restoration job!
New subscriber to your channel excellent work, great use of traditional methods to restore this beautiful piece of steel, well done
Thanks for the sub! I have good news for you. I just uploaded a new video
You've done an amazing job! I really like your choice of woods for the handle.
If i ever restore a Japanese knife i will definitely use those woods, very good looking.
Great video,I definitely need a camera your using, superb restoration 😊
I see videos like this and I just wish there was a way for the original craftsman of this knife to see their work restored after all these decades
great job
Well done, without words, for such precise work and workmanship, one can only bow down, respect from old BG.
Really nice!!!
Looks very nice
I really enjoyed your video. Great job on restoration and handle with ebony and Bloodwood turned out beautifully.
