    • @village8555
      @village8555 3 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      @itsjustcoreybro Because the Bible says it verbatim.
      Exodus 21:20 ends with, “...since the slave is their property.”
      In Hebrew, property would read “Silver”. It does not get any more clear than this.
      And, Hebrew history clearly shows a track record of chattel slavery.

    I remember asking my mother what they're studying in Bible study because anytime I say something is in the Bible she is adamant that it's not, then I open her Bible and show her and she literally shuts down any further discussion, so clearly whatever they're studying in Bible study ain't the Bible 😆

      About 3 or 4 years ago, my catholic mom started going to church every day instead of just on Sunday (she’s retired). Sometimes, I’ll notice her behaviors and choices that she makes that are not very Christian-like. I’m tempted to call her out on it (someday I might) but I feel like it will either fall on deaf ears or she will just call my perspective irrelevant since I don’t go to church anymore (I stopped going to church about 20 years ago). Anyway, I thought it was similar to your anecdote, so I wanted to share.

      Religion is great at influencing thought stopping techniques. My MIL is a Jehovah’s Witness and when COVID first started she went on this long tangent about how this was the end and the 144k (or how ever many they think are saved) will be in heaven and so on. If I tried to ask any question that was against her view and logical she would just go silent and stare. Not stare at me but almost through me. As if she was erasing the comment from her mind then would start over again. It’s sad really.

      Years ago I used to go to a church in UK where the preacher actually welcomed questions and challenges. His own theology was not exactly orthodox. Like a lot of British preachers, I met, he saw the Bible as a very flawed collection of books, and argued that believing in the Bible as being inerrant was setting up the Bible as a false God. His argument was that the only ground 0f faith was our personal experience and belief, including intellectual experience. I suspect most of the preachers I met in UK would be denounced as heretics by the American fundamentalist churches. One of his many messages was that disbelief after serious thought was closer to God than belief without thought. I think William fits the latter category.

    Biblical endorsement of slavery matches what you would expect from human authors. At the time the bible was written, slavery was thought to be more acceptable than it is today. Lots of horrendous things were more accepted back then. The fact that the bible endorses them is evidence that it's a product of its time, rather than a message from a devine being who by definition knows better.
    It's sad to see modern people defending these things. It's also really ironic that Christians will defend biblical slavery then turn around and say that it's the athiests who lack a moral foundation. My moral framework may be relative, but at least it's based on human well-being, and it's flexible enough for me to grow morally - I can learn and change my mind about my moral positions if I'm shown to be wrong. Their "objective" framework immediately leads them to obvious contradictions and/or morally reprehensible positions, and they're stuck with the words on the page. The ink is dry and their god is silent.
    It's also plainly obvious that while the bible stumbles into some good moral lessons, they are not exclusive to that book or to theism. The same lessons can be reached with a secular morality that values well-being. The mere existence of god wouldn't add anything of value to our understanding of morality, but if the bible is true then it contradicts our understanding. It offers an excuse for shitty people to do shitty things and that's pretty much the only "exclusive feature" of biblical morality.

    This is what happens when a theist is forced to confront the problems with their religion and is willing to answer questions put to them, if they are honest with themselves like William seems to be, they are forced into a crisis of faith and begin to realize the truth of the matter. At this point William can continue down this path towards freedom from religion, or dive back into it with blinders on. I realized this at a young age, doing as I was told, reading the bible, seeing the moral problems with it and unable to get legitimate answers from those who were supposed to be teachers of Christianity.

    William confidentiality jumped into the deep end of the pool without his water wings on & found himself drowning way over his head real quick
