How to layout your Living room furniture using Fengshui

- Here is a clear visual explanation of how you can lay out the furniture in your living room to optimise the space and its use. There is nothing superstitious about it, and is entirely sensible, in fact, most good interior designers would subconsciously employ the same same theories because they make so much sense!

Lol. I think most Western houses, units and apartments are Feng Shui nightmares. I hope you'll get Cliff's book and keep up watching his videos. Feng Shui is more about energy so you can overcome a lot. Also, if you own the house, you can gradually make improvements. Good luck.
I think you did a great job drawing a living room that is very representative of many living rooms. Mine is similar in shape but the window is on the same wall as the door and the stairs come in from where the top wall is

My front door is diagonal, enters into a mostly closed off kitchen, a wall separates the kitchen and the living room. The dining room is off to the right it’s a puzzle 🧩
Weird apartment. 1011 square but not well laid out like the newer modern ones

Love these videos. Going to try rearranging my living room to see if I can have it make more sense. Not a lot of space though, but I think if I use my book case as a room divider and move the couch to the other side, away from the door, that might change things for the better

We have a living room of 10x5 metres, windows on the short side, a door on the other short side, a door in the corner on the long side. How to set up te room? It is a large space and we have no idea how to plan it well. We are always sitting in a place in the middle of a pathway. We want a childrens play space, a bookshelf and a television corner.

If you sell these custom that'd be awesome! Not everyone has the same furniture pieces.

Thanks for all your videos, i appreciate it ! I was wondering how would you manage a dining and living room almost like your exemple, but with 2 more doors? One double on the north wall, one aside right of the large window to go on the terrace, and one double on the south wall (just facing the north one) ?
It s hard to put the dining room and the sofa without being in the circulate area and the optimise the space...
I like that you use models to show us what you meant in your arrangement suggestions.
Can you also do a video on how best to put recliner chairs in small living room with tv and windows?

My sofa is adjacent to the door with our largest window directly behind it haha ugh
On one wall, we have door and window. The wall to one side is where the woodstove's alcove is, so we can't have the sofa over there. The alcove is an inset space with an arch, to highlight the woodstove, but this means we can't place a television above the fireplace. On the only solid wall, the wall is in line with the door like the wall shown here, and it's shorter than our sofa. Opposite the main window and front door, the room is open on 2/3rds to our dining area. The other 3rd is a closet with mirrors. the mirrored closet aligns with the front door.
Personally I'm considering swapping the dining area with the living area so we can have fireside dinners and place our sofa along one of the two solid walls in our current dining space. Oh, and covering the mirrors on the closet. Highly dislike seeing a silhouette in the doorway when I walk in if it's night time haha
I've been playing catch up watching your videos. My bedroom is awful. The head of the bed has to be next to the door to the hall. Now that I have a loft bed I'm sleeping so much better!

if they are L-shaped they are said to create poison arrows. The curved ones are good.

im addicted, everywhere i go i think "dearmodern wouldnt approve of this layout" or "dearmodern would approve of this layout" which is ironic because my bedroom isnt following feng shui at all
My issue is that if I put my sofa in the command position the view out my window is crowded by neighboring buildings vs if it is in line with the door the view is of tree tops and skyscrapers in the distance. So which is better; fishbowl view command position or high energy alignment with front door and beautiful city views?

Can you place a piece of furniture (small side table, low book shelf) between the sofa and the door? Bonus: Put plant/lamp on it to further break the energy.

what can you do with dead spaces? i have a sofa and a love seat. at christmas time, the space is where i put a big christmas tree but any other time it creates a dead space beside the entertainment center (which because of the christmas tree is not centered). can you put plants or bookcase in it?
I have a combined living /dining room. My couch has to not have a back wall to be in the command position. I hope that’s ok? The other thing is I have a fireplace on the side wall. I don’t really use it but I don’t know if that would be treated differently than a regular wall.
I purchased your book and trying to layout my livingroom dining room area. There are 2 main windows perpendicular to one another. Difficult to find the command position. Can drapery help if one of the couches are in front of a window?
I agree with not having the window behind the sofa, as it would feel like you were blocking the natural light, and then you couldn't really look out of the window, if it's behind you when you're sat down.
What if we have a 2 seater + a 3 seater but our windows are on the left when you enter and the door faces a huge wall, what would you recommend?

Do you accept requests? We’ve recently moved into a home that’s half the size of our previous home and trying to fit every thing in. It’s also open planned, whereas all our previous living has been in defined rooms.
I feel like our living room is impossible. We have a fireplace in the SW corner. The south wall has a big window and french doors to the backyard. NW corner is a door to the bedroom. The north wall is the kitchen with a cutout, then a dining room. The NE corner is the front door, with a weird support beam a few feet away from each wall. 😭 It all feels impossible to properly decorate

Little curious why a TV shouldn't be a focal point tbh. If it's the main function of your living room, as you don't socialize, shouldn't be catered to? Similar to how I want main walkways/thoroughfares unobstructed do I not want the equipment I'm using most frequently to be most accessible? You're removing functionality in a sense by not having a frequently used television be a focal point. Feel like that's an individuals pre-conceived notions and bias's on technology coming into play. I still take away a lot from these videos, but I'll work in what works for me too.
Agreed, my couch is still in a command position where I can look out my picture window or watch tv, but both the window and the tv can be the focus of the room. It's not really set up for socializing as I don't generally enjoy having very many people in my space. It still works well for me and feels comfortable.
I live in a 320sq ft tiny house. Our living room and kitchen are all one room and open concept. The only wall we have to put the sofa on contains our one and only living room window. The only other option for the sofa is to float it out in the middle of the floor, with the back fact it the kitchen cabinets. What should we do?

Why not put the settee against the wall the door is on! You could put the dining in front of the windows

I think what I've gathered from these videos after binging them is that this floorplan here sucks and isn't ideal. the kitchen being so close to the entrance makes the dining too close to the door, and isn't the only bathroom entrance through the kitchen?
