What a Thai buddhist monk eats in a day

  • Buddhist monks in Thailand have a rather peculiar diet. A monk can't just eat food whenever they want and they can't just eat whatever they want. A Buddhist Thai monk has to go on a quest for food. Monks in Thailand go on an alms round to collect their meal. Reverse engineers was lucky to be able to film the life of a monk (a bhikku) during his breakfast morning ritual in small jungle Temple in Sakon Nakhon.
The second best thing about Thailand is the food. I mean, who doesn’t love Thai food, right? And there is plenty of options to choose from.
But having too much options can be a problem sometimes. Every time when I’m with my sister and we are both hungry, we don’t seem to be able to make a choice.
When we finally made up our minds, we end up with enough food for a small family to have breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
This morning, Dong woke up at 4.30 for his first meditation session.
This is Dong’s first day as a true monk. I wake up at 06.00. I’m clearly not a true monk...
Monks are a bit of a mystery for me. I don’t know much about the life of monks, but I do know that they don’t possess much, they have a very basic wardrobe, and they don’t need hair gel.
Dong told me that monks in his temple can only have one meal a day. They are not allowed to cook or buy food. Monks don’t have a choice when it comes to food. They exclusively rely on food that people give them.
At 6.30 in the morning, Dong and the monks gather at this rendezvous point and start their quest for food, also called their alms round, almsgiving or begging for food.
They walk for one and a half kilometers of roads that look more painful than stepping on a piece of lego.
But on their road, they find a lot of people who are willing to share their food with the monks. Young, old, poor or disabled. Everybody showed a lot of respect towards the monks. And the monks were grateful for every piece of rice they got.
And then there are these dedicated helpers, who turn all offered goods into delicious Thai dishes.
Monks live this sober because they shouldn’t get distracted from their goals. All their time and energy should be dedicated on meditating and find spiritual peace.
The people who share their food with the monks get blessed by their act of kindness. The people who help to prepare the food will have a better life in the hereafter.
I don’t really believe in a life hereafter. But I do believe that all these people will get extra karma points in this life.
When everything is prepared, the monks will sit together and share all the food. They have to take at least something from every bowl to show their gratitude and not to discriminate any sort of food. Also, they can’t let food go to waste. So they have to eat everything they take.
And after a short prayer, it’s finally time for the monks to fuel up their minds and bodies.
The left-overs are shared by all the people who help the monks.
But the best thing about food in Thailand,
is that Thai people always share their food.

Thai monks have to go on an alms round to get their food. Especially these 'forrest' monks can only have one meal a day and totally rely on what people offer them as they can't be involved in the process of preparing food. Do you think you can live like this?

I'm not sure if you get what the meaning of being a monk is. It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with what others do or don't do. It is a way of living for themselves they eat one meal a day, following the way of living of Buddha, living a humble life. It's more a mental thing than a food wise thing. Also, neither do they say that everybody should live like them. They are in no way telling other people what you should or shouldn't do.

That's great to hear. I think there's a purpose for everybody. One becomes a monk and one becomes a teacher like you did. How do you feel about your choice nowadays?

Do these monks in Thailand consume animal by products? I once watched a documentary about a monastery in Vietnam and they had a monk as head cook. They cooked only what they grew and ate all plant-based foods. Part of their belief was not to harm living things. I believe i saw eggs in this video? Do these monks harm living things?

Truthfully, I envy the monks. To have such a simple and care free life is a great blessing. While I am unmarried and have no children, I still have some cares and things to maintain but these are those the most basic, but, even with that, I am freer than a great many people.

Ajahn Cagino, a Malaysian Theravadin monk ordained in Thailand and set up an orphanage in Mae Hong Son once mentioned during his Dhamma talk in Singapore that Buddhist monks eat what their devotees like to eat and not what they like to eat. They have to eat whatever their devotees had offered them. 😅🙏

i used to eat once a day too, what i learned was this , your body does not need as much fuel as you think it does , that eating slowly and knowing exactly how much you need as fuel means your body is healthier , eating with intention and with love for the body , that is what matters not eating only for the mouth but health , i am not a monk , not any religion , i do not kill, intentionally that is , but i eat flesh , so ... no angel , i will not see a person hungry and not feed them , i eat more often now , simply because my daughter and son in law need to , my daughter for sure as she is breast feeding , but still i eat for need , i am 57 , no fad eater , i just eat for health but yes eating raw as much as you can for sure the benefits show on your skin , in your health and in your face , that is me in the picture

A school mate told me about another source of income since I was a student. I registered for that and things improved.
However, even though life has been better ever since, I still eat and live meagerly even though I don't have to do so. Now, I basically eat two meals per day- breakfast and lunch. If I am hungry around dinner, I will have something light or drink a fruit juice of some sort- orange, mango, or pineapple 🙏

People are programmed robot slaves of the system thinking happyness starts with extern factors like status, money, material things that means nothing and its relativ and an illusion create by society....
If your happyness depend on extern factors you will never be because extern factors are endless.
    Happyness starts inside you.
The more people around you, the more expectations, talk about others, comparing, judge, own benefits, hate, negativity, jealousy, double standards etc..... reflection of the broken empty souls.
Alone or in solitude you have more strength, peace, power, happyness, freedom and time.
I change my life also when i was 35 and now i am 43.
No tv, social media, no people around me, no stuff etc....

The tattoos in Thailand is also called sakt yant (I hope I spelled it correctly).
Sakt yant are kinda like blessings from the monks and is carried by many and unreligious people in Thailand (should mention that Thailand are superstitious compared to the western world). Just some chopped information.
Sakt yant are preformed by (you might have guessed it) monks.
They poke you with a stick and it feel like being stung be bees uncontrollably.
Each designs are like blessing like wishing being more charismatis, wanting to be a better leader, warrior to protect, you get the ges. It is believed to also protect you and your folks around, and claimed to protect you from mortal wounds like gunshots, so it is common knowledge that even yakuza in Thailand are also invested in this practice.
Some temples perform them. I have heard that the monk chose the design for you. People give them a symbolic flower and also a pack of cigs, money donations are all from maintaining the temple, helping orphans, helping the monks lifestyle like glasses and a couple other things.
I have considered to get these blessings besides being appealing, but a give a sense of spirituality inspiration.
As a guy from the west, consider just get them made in a tattoo salon instead, you will know why if you looked this method up
