You know the movie is bad when Chris' review starts with how great the director was.

Ethe[R] Music I think B is good. B- means "just not good" imo that translates to "ok" xD I'd agree that a C is meh. Maybe ratings should be changed to these kinds of terms :p

A lot of people forget about the (mock)documentary "The Curse of the Blair Witch" which was shown on public television where I live just before the film came out. We had a Sunday horror night each week on a local TV channel that showed classic horror films then one week they showed the documentary. It was incredibly well done and went into great depth on all aspects of the story and plot which made it seem highly believable. As a young teen I had no experience in mockumentaries, and they had certainly never been used to that effect in regards to marketing and reinforcing the non-fiction of a film. As such it really created the atmosphere of "is this real?" and also thickened up the plot.
I get why many modern viewers don't get the fuss or why it was such a big deal at the time but this film is very different in regards to the marketing being so integral to the overall mystique, immersion and enjoyment of the film.
Here's a link just in case anyone wants to check it out and can therefore understand what all the fuss was about after it just randomly popped up on TV one night for the film to be released a month or two later:

Your rant on jump scares needs refining, - you can speak about how a scare like that immediately removes all tension in the scene, which then has to be built back up, losing valuable character time. Count the "jump scares" in The Shining.... - How much Tension is in the Shining? All the tension,

Cheap jump scares actually diminish adrenaline. They're not actually scary, but cause people to have the chemical reaction of surprise over and over again (as you said " then has to be built back up) to a point where they are less scared or surprised when the real shit goes down in the movie.

      1. they break one of those twig figures from the 1st movie and a girl snaps in half
      2. it's raining heavy as shit and it's intense
      3. A girl pulls a bug out of her wound
4.there's a hint at a guy being stuck in a house for years even though he only arrived in forest like a day or two ago
      5. there's a really well done claustrophobic scene which is probably the best scene in the movie
      6. They show a monster but it's not the witch
      7. There's a time loop happening and basically the entire movie is probably a time loop
      8. They explain what the witch can do with the forest but they don't say it but more show
      9. and basically a really weird recreation of the final scene from the 1st movie except this time they're in the attic

My theory on the Blair Witch ending:
    --- SPOILERS ---
The creature you see in the last 10 minutes isnt' the witch..... it's an extraterrestrial being!
Wingard and Barrett reinvented the mythology of the witch with the idea that aliens inhabit in those woods (or use it as a base), therefore every strange phenomenon is connected to them. You can clearly see that it's a humanoid creature and looks nothing like the ghost on an 18 century woman.
    Plus this would explain:
    1) the disappearence of many children throughout the years (they were actually abducted by these aliens)
    2) the time warping/space manipulating abilities that the witch has (alien technology)
    3) all those light in the final minutes (why would a ghost send out all those glares??)
    4) the weird worm growing in the black girl's foot (maybe it's an extraterrestrial life form brought by them, or one that originated in those woods as a result of a bacterial contamination)

I also got confused with that, but I thought about it and think it's a never-ending loop. In the beginning, it shows Heather in the mirror running away, and in the ending, it shows the main chick in the same exact position. Later on once the found footage is recovered from future teens, they'll go out into the woods looking for clues but will be in the same position, running away from the Blair Witch, making it a never-ending cycle. Hope this all makes sense😂

Best found footage movies I've seen are still the first two [REC] films by far, the amount of intensity and genuine scares those films contained is unmatched compared to any other film in this genre. I didn't like the first Blair Witch, and I hoped this one would be good, but much to my dismay, it was a beat-for-beat recreation (as you stated), except for the well rounded final act of the film.

I'm a fan of the original. The complaints I hear people say about the first one, about how boring it was, how stupid the characters are, how it all led up to nothing, I did not feel about the original at all. This movie, however, is exactly the movie people described the original as: boring, the characters were stupid, and it led to nothing. Along with Chris said, the fucking jumpscares. As for the final ten minutes of the movie, that was the worst part of the movie for me. The tunnel scene was not claustrophobic, nor scary, because, unlike the first film, I did not give a shit about any of the characters in this film, nor did I find it scary because everything that occurred prior to that was pure garbage.

"Jump scares" are fine, when they're done right, at the right moments and in the right context.
There's a very particular time and place for them, and I gotta say Chris is right, cheap and unearned jump scares that happen at seemingly random times throughout the film have a desensitizing effect on them, in general.
Just like anything good, the initial value decreases SUBSTANTIALLY when not used in sparing moderation.
Not every movie even needs a jump scare just to qualify as a horror or thriller film. Every now and then it's appropriate, and can even be perfect in the right circumstances.
But less is definitely more with those kinds of tropes.
Fewer jump scares, please! And, if your movie just HAS to have one, please at LEAST make it happen at the right moment. We're all being slowly desensitized to catharsis nowadays already, let's try to keep a few things sacred, until we've evolved away from heeding warnings given off by our Amygdalas lol when "fight or flight" is no longer a necessary human trait.

    • @irishman6414
      @irishman6414 8 ปีที่แล้ว +29

What people don't seem to understand is that retreading the original is not, itself, a bad thing. What matters is whether the sequel takes the structure and does something different. Chris made a video on this, where he talked about Indiana Jones and how all three movies follow the same pattern. Look at any successful franchise and you'll see the same thing: Terminator, Alien, Back to the Future, etc. The Force Awakens added a lot of new ideas and twists on the old formula. Creed and Fury Road did the same as well. What Chris is complaining about is when they don't add any new ideas or doing it as well as it was before, meaning there's no reason to sit through it if you've already seen the first one. If you've seen the first 2 Terminator movies, you can skip the rest. But watching A New Hope and Force Awakens are still different experiences with different themes and characters.

    • @irishman6414
      @irishman6414 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Danny Malzahn I don't agree. I think the differences lie in the details. If you're looking at it myopically, of course it's similar. It's fucking Star Wars; they're always going to repeat certain ideas and themes. The prequels stole just as much. Sure, they added more, but all of it was bullshit and retarded, so I don't see how that's an even trade.
But it's different because the characters face different struggles and are different kinds of people. That's what makes stories interesting, not the plot structure. Rey is different than Luke or Anakin. She's not interested in adventure or excitement; she just wants her family back. Her struggle is internal, not external. She has to make a choice to accept her destiny, which she does. Luke's struggles in A New Hope were mostly relegated to needing to be saved all the time like a little bitch. He had no real inner turmoil in that movie. That only happened later on in Empire. He even gets over the horrific death of his Aunt and Uncle almost immediately. So, sure, if you want to call her thin, I say Luke was thinner in that movie, and by comparison, Rey has more depth. Same with Kylo. He has an inner struggle. Vader, not so much in IV. He was just... evil. Again, all the depth came later. And nobody had any depth in the entirety of the Phantom Menace, so don't even try to say they did.
All this stupid stuff about who can and can't use a lightsaber to me is ridiculous. The story isn't meant to be take *literally*. It's like a metaphor. Or a legend. Or a fable. It's not a D&D quest. There aren't stats governing all this shit. The hero wins because they're the hero. Good triumphs over evil. Classic storytelling tropes. It has more in common with King Arthur than Star Trek. So complaining about what is and isn't plausible is like a snake eating its own tail. It solves nothing in the long run. And applying any of these standards to the prior six movies makes it seem even more trivial, because all of these people would be dead a million times over if this was a world governed by physics. You can't float a few feet above 1000 degree lava and not burst into flames. Jedi or not, he ain't made out flame-resistent materal. So the plausibility argument is a confirmation bias argument. You accept the premise that the movie is bad, then look for reasons why, instead of the other way around.

    • @trevorthornley8835
      @trevorthornley8835 8 ปีที่แล้ว

kylo ren was shot by a weapon that can send you flying 10 feet away. in fact he was probably fighting with half a kidney. he isn't fully trained and hasn't been fighting jedi in quite a while. rey knows how to use a staff and if she is able to use that then she can use a lightsaber. she was running away from him most of the fight and we don't know if she is one of the pupils of luke skywalker.

jump scares is honestly one of the reasons i tend to stay away from the horror genre, but when i stumble upon a horror movie or game that builds upon tension and an intriguing concept there are few experiences that can live up to that.

  • @oochakawaya
    @oochakawaya 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

This movie is weird. I found it very tense and there were some very inventive and imaginative horror concepts in this film. The time displacement, the idea that the sun hasn't come up in 5 days, the drone stuff - it's all great stuff...but the original is super ambiguous with it's approach to the supernatural and that aspect was completely abandoned in this film.
It seems like this film was trying too hard to counter the oversimplified general complaints from the first Blair Witch project film which was that "Nothing Happens."
To me, the Blair Witch Project was all about setting a supernatural horror film in real life. By never showing the antagonist or any actual supernatural occurrences it stands up as the most realistic depiction of supernatural horror to date. This is as real as it gets.
I think this new film had a really difficult job. People are already pretty desensitized to horror, a lot of people disliked the slow pace and (anti) climax of the original film and other people really liked the minimalistic realism of the original. It's hard to balance these but at the end of the day it's still a fun horror flick.
    B- Works for me.

It worked for me. Sometimes watching a movie at hike or with a group of things lessens the effect a movie should have. Or like you said you become desensitized to things. Jump scares rarely ever work, but there are a few times where I think they're done well. For example in Alien, the cat in that film has a jump scare and it works. But the reason why it works isn't because of the jump itself, it works because there's a tension build up, and when the cat jumps that releases the tension, and that is when the Alien appears. The jump scare isn't the scare, it's the false alleviation of tension that brings about the scare.

The original Blair Witch Project had much more natural acting, and it sold the whole found footage gimmick. Here, with this new film, it hindered my enjoyment. BW3 was terrible. Enjoyably so at parts, but I think Blair Witch 2 does "so bad, it's good" better, and I'd rather watch that film than this new one again.

Love your reviews Chris, but I have to completely disagree on this one. I'd give *Blair Witch* a *C+* at best, it was one of the most unnecessary sequels ever made and rehashed nearly everything that worked in its predecessor to a lesser result.
The premise basically rips off 2009's *Friday the 13th*, the modern technology doesn't make up for the derivative cinematography, and the characters are more annoying than Heather's group. The suspense is mediocre since they copy several scares from the original, and the twist in the finale actually hurts more than it ever could have helped, with plot holes ripe for picking apart. I won't spoil it, but let's just say that the "come full circle" angle really doesn't work in retrospect.
This is exactly why I was against a continuation of the first film, because I suspected it would turn out like this. The problem with Blair Witch as a cultural phenomenon is that there's simply no way to achieve the same influence or reactions as before. However you go about it, a majority of audiences today are adapted to what was considered fresh in 1999.
If the crew truly wanted to pay homage while succeeding in their own right, they should have come up with a totally new type of story within the lore that would stand on its own merits. This film's worst mistake was ruining the ambiguity of the original by blatantly asserting that what's happening is indeed supernatural (the witch herself even appears at one point).
Part of what made the first film scary was that we didn't know for sure what was responsible for the events occurring. Was there a witch, were townspeople were messing with the characters, or were they somehow just losing their minds and the footage we see is edited in a way to support that? Well, consider that psychological edge blown out the window now.
Overall, I personally refuse to acknowledge this as a sequel to or associate it with the first *Blair Witch*.

As always, good review, and thank you for the info. I actually fell asleep during the original Blair Witch. Serious. I'm not making some kind of heightened comparison to "up" my view of the original. I literally fell asleep and honestly didn't understand why people were SO freaked out by the original. There were X-files episodes which I thought were far more gripping and disturbing. "Home" would be a great example. I think that was around the same time. Like you said, if I didn't dig the original I probably won't dig this one. I'll probably sit this one out. Thanks again for the review. Much appreciated, and all the best to ya.

I really get a sense from a lot of recent horror movies that the creators had an idea for a single aweslne scene/sequence, and really nothing else. So what we get is somewhere between 35 seconds to 10 minutes of the director realizing their vision, and it's good, but it's tacked on to a movie that is completely pointless and empty. We saw this in the purge films, where you would get to the really creepy part with the masks, well shot and dramatic and awesome, but the rest of the movie is a snooze fest.
The let ten minutes of Blair Witch was fantastic. But the rest of it was atrocious. The characters could hardly have been more bland if the writers had tried. The jump scares were entirely purposeless. I thought the acting was okay sometimes, but altogether pretty hokey. If you see this movie make sure you understand that you're only there for the last scene.

I think that's the deal with so many movies. Lots of writers say 'oh I got an idea for a scene and I just ran with it' but that doesn't always work out

I really wish they didn’t just confirm that “yep there’s witch’s in the woods or something idk aliens who knows.” The idea of the murder plot in the woods was so much more terrifying, the idea that they murdered a woman taped it that tape got realeased and nobody noticed is chilling

Sorry Chris, D- for me total rubbish I loved the first one I thought it was interesting and different but this was real bad, nearly fell asleep about half way through and the last 10mins does not make a film.

The fact that no one had used the idea of a filming a suspence/horro film like a home video. Complete with close up's and shaking camera, also the fact that you really never see the witch except for a split sec, this left a lot to your imagination, I hope this expalins why i like the first one. The second one just dose not have the same impact and I though the story very weak and nothing I had not see before in other films.

This movie was so bad it actually made me angry. That almost never happens. I literally enjoy the worst of the worst. But this was just infuriating. I remember being SO excited when it was still being marketed as The Woods, it looked really tense and interesting. Then it was revealed to be Blair Witch and I was even more pumped! The original still freaks me out to this day, and the trailer for this one looked really promising. Watching the final product however, was just a slap in the face, as someone who's LOVED the found footage genre for years. Adam Wingard man... he makes such amazing films like You're Next, and the segment from V/H/S, just to completely ruin it with garbage like this and the Death Note remake he made. It's frustrating.

Besides the jump scares, this is a decent horror movie and my favorite horror movie from this year (that I have seen). It's definitely my favorite Blair Witch movie. The first one is good, but it doesn't hold up well as time goes on; I don't talk about Book of Shadows. Blair Witch is one of the few good found footage movies I have seen that I like. I give it a 7/10 just because it was a bit too similar to the first and the constant jump scares.

  • @subzro993

Blair Witch 2016 was awful. Wingard completely missed the point of the original. The mysterious unanswered questions. What does the witch look like? Is it a physical being or is it a spirit? Does it even have an human embodiment or is it just a inter dimensional entity living through the forest? Not a single jump scare. The fear was brought on by the unknowing and the insanity slowly developing in the characters. Finally to lead to the eery visuals of the ending. Arguably one of the creepiest scenes in cinema history.
Instead what we got was non stop jump scares. As if jump scares aren’t cheap enough they were mostly false alarms. Like Chris said the friends jump in the camera and say “Hey”. It’s beyond cheap and one of the cringiest attempts at horror I’ve ever seen. And it only got worse. 17 years of wondering what this witch looks like and she finally reveals herself as a 8 foot deformed monster. Roaring like an Orc and running after the characters. Completely eliminating the mysterious supernatural entity we all loved in the original.
It’s obvious Wingard didn’t have any passion in this project. He just made an extremely cheap shallow movie for stupid people. 0/10 probably the worst movie I’ve ever seen. Especially as a sequel to a classic horror.

  • @JordanPCK

I thought the movie was full of too many cheap jump scares with too many characters that I didn't care for. It felt so scripted, many of the tense moments felt forced, lots of loud generic screechy noises, there were too many characters and cameras, basically it just didn't feel real at all. Also I was annoyed with how they used the cameras, they kept going between the different camera perspectives and many of the shots were too professionally done to feel like an amateur movie while sometimes it seemed like they tried too hard to make the shots seem like amateur footage. Maybe I'm being too negative there but I just didn't feel immersed at all with the story, they just didn't feel like real people to me.
Having said that, there were a few things I liked...
    *SPOILERS*
The way that voodoo stick figure thing was snapped resulting in one of the female characters getting her back snapped, I thought that was a cool idea and was executed well. I also liked the twist round about the end where the camera footage seemed to be a repeat of the camera footage found at the start of the movie, I thought that was nicely done and gives you a few things to think about. I even liked the design of the Blair Witch herself, although I much preferred the original where she wasn't seen at all, leaving your imagination to do the work.
That ending scene infuriated me, when that man and woman (I forgot their names) were standing in the corner of the room, but at the same time RECORDING THEMSELVES at a really awkward angle while crying in fear. It seemed a little silly to me, why would you do that in that situation.
I'm not normally so negative, but there was something about this movie I really hated, I honestly thought that this is one of the worst horror movies I have ever seen, for me at least anyway. Maybe it was because I loved the original so much, as it didn't rely on jump scares or sudden loud noises, and also in the original I found the characters to be very real. So perhaps I'm comparing it too much to the original. Anyway sorry for ranting on a bit there.

As usual, great review Chris. As a film-buff-father, your review actually made me extremely happy. My 14-year old daughter and I watch everything we possibly can. Well...not everything. That could get weird. Either way, if we finally find time to sit through the first one, and then Ema will demand we see part too-dumb that I haven't even seen it yet. At this point, the movie will most likely be on VOD. Like other genres, there are some horror flicks you just HAVE to see in the theater!
Blair Witch sounds like the perfect combo, all-in-one film. What are your thoughts on trying to sway her out of seeing the first two? Is Blair Witch an okay starting point?
    Thanks for what you do!

In all fairness, if a lot of people and their friend groups were out in the woods, there will always be that one person who does go for the jump scare. Usually you let them get away with it once, punch them in the arm, and then laugh it off. It usually doesn't happen again because everyone knows that the second person who decides to be lame and tries it will get clobbered and be ostracized for the rest of the trip.
Wonderful review though, I'm definitely curious about the film now, since I am also a part of the generation that was just the right age when the original came out.
