    Love it. At the gym losing weight for my second attempt of walking 90 miles of the Ridgeway in the UK. Last year I was 400lbs, this year I am 300lbs. Still a way to go but the path is long. Cheers Tim.

    Nothing like the Sierra Nevada to humble a hiker. Love it up there, and watching videos like this only makes me respect John Muir that much more...what a badass that guy was! Great videos, Darwin, thanks for taking us along on your post-holing adventures. :)

    Hello, Darwin. I just want to thank you very much for the time and effort that you put into these videos. I am currently in the process of a weight lose regimen and I find that your videos give me the motivation to continue when the "hunger" is trying to win. My ultimate goal is to hike the AT. Maybe in two years I can put into action all that I have learned from your channel. Thank you again very much.

    Those stone steps that you were complaining about? There are tons more hiding under the snow, so you skipped most of them. They were really hard for me, since I am short and have old knees, and you got to walk over the top of them!
    I am enjoying seeing my trip, in reverse, with snow. Thanks.

    Loved the Ken Burns "shout out" at 15:45. Hes probably my favorite documentarian especially his National Parks series :-)
    Question, when you broke your trekking pole did you just use a stick in Duplex or tie up to a branch? And is your time with 1 pole what got you to eventually go 1 pole on future trips, and start using the single pole Pleximid?

    Your broken tracking pole reminded me of a time when, as a teenager, I was entrusted with my cousins over and under shotgun, the instructions were; Keep it pointed forward, only take off the safety catch when you mount it, don't swing around and if you fall, fall under the gun. Those scenes and vistas are wonderful, I think I'd find it hard to leave there. Many thanks for sharing your wonderful journey.

    Great work Darwin. Any way to put the actual date on when you did these stretches? I ask because my brother and wife are doing it now, too. They started mid April, but it's been hard to figure who's ahead or behind. Zero days, low mileage days, etc. make it tough to gauge.

    Throwing this out there.. biolite.
    I know it weighs a lot, but once you master it the tiniest dead leavings provide everything you need. Using a 1st Gen snow peak tI mini solo plus a cheap ti 450 ml single wall nested opens up works of occasional gourmet stuff. Please try it out and forgey the weight just for the test. Without the fuel you'll never look back. Balances the extra weight and carry.

    I think you'll find that the "Sierras" really go past Desolation Wilderness. So I'd say the Sierras end as you cross highway 80, near Donner summit. But the height and steepness of the passes is a lot less.

    I don’t understand why snowshoes would not help with post holing?

    • @3_up_moon
      @3_up_moon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Sean Peine
      I asked about postholing in one of the recent videos.
      I'd like to know if he's ever tried snowshoes.
      Strictly philosophically speaking, maybe they dont work in slushy stuff? I think the only real way to answer is someone that's actually used snowshoes in different types of snow pack.
      Snowshoes weigh quite a lot but postholing is arduous work and maybe worth the extra weight?

    • @3_up_moon
      @3_up_moon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It may also be a question of changing terrain multiple times in a short period since the snow is patchy?

    • @DarwinOnthetrail
      @DarwinOnthetrail  6 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      I have actually done a Tonof snowshoeing in the past...It has nothing to do with weight. They are only useful about 10% of the time. There is a ton of Rocky/Off Camber trail in the Sierra where Snowshoes wouldn’t be Efficient. So it’s just not worth it to put them on & take them off every Mile or so. Thanks for Watching!

    Nice video - passes are a beast of another stripe. You can't compare low-land mileage to alpine :)
    Question: It occurs to me - I have no idea what the average time between towns is on a through-hike? Are you 2 days out, 4 days out? I know it varies, but I am wondering what sort of stretches there are in through-hiking between seeing "people" places and "nature" places.

    • @jamieofalltrades536
      @jamieofalltrades536 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Franklandish I don't know about on the PCT but I'm getting ready to do a section hike of the AT and the first section we are hiking is about 4 days from start to the first town. We are camping overnight we are not hiking through in the dark. Probably about 12 miles per day for us before we set up camp and call it a night.

    When do you think you will be at White Pas or Chinook. Do you need anything as my husband and I have been watching you. He has gone from Chinook to White pass..with 3 of our children ages ago. I know he would love to say hi...You are getting to Canada..

    Awesome vid quality yet again Darwin! You're vids give me goosebumps as I get ready for my 2019 NOBO section-hike. I always wonder what the dates are of your locations. What date was it as you came up on Yosemite's border, and what was your start date? Looking forward to episode 14!

    If you were to hike the JMT again Who would you bring the ice ax or leave it behind it seems like you didn’t get much use out of it
