One foot at a time gets it done.
(i hiked 26 miles last week in 9 hours, without a pack, and had knee and ankle issues for a several days)
so, i totally agree with you. It is NOT easy, however he does make it seem like, "no big thang." haha
Keep it up, Darwin! Love the videos.

Awesome! You inspired me to go camping at Mammoth National Park or another national forest. I bought a River Country tent and will seam seal it to be sure, but see how it handles the rain without the DWR (water resistance) coating first. It was about $50 for the the 2 man tent and is three pounds. I went from a massive 4 person tent and and cut off about 5-6 pounds of pack weight with a single buy.
I wanted to mention issues some hikers have and how I recently learned 'prehab' exercises can prevent them. I believe you mentioned IT band problems, and squats can help it. You can really hit the legs harder with Bulgarian split squats. It strengthens the glutes, which are key to reduce IT band injury, many feel. In addition, balancing on one foot with eyes closed as long as possible strengthens the ankle very well-this is a proprioception exercise, a fancy term for balance exercise. If you do those two exercises twice a week, you will be much better off. I find that for the Bulgarian split squats, I do 3 sets, each set to complete failure. I also increase weight over time by holding something in my hands, like dumbbells. A backpack can also be used.

I have thoroughly enjoyed watching all of these videos so far and can't wait for you to post the rest. Thanks for the inspiration. You got me up off my butt and out on a short (due to thunderstorms) hike today. Been in a hiking rut the past few months since i left Cali and the trails here in Florida kinda suck, but your videos have re-awoken that hiking bug. Happy trails!

I made a poor man's trekking pole set out of this trunk organizer net frame. It has two telescoping aluminum tubes that are virtually perfect. I already put on wrist straps and will add something to the bottom eventually. Sure they probably will get dented or bent eventually, but they have decent thickness. I think total weight for both is like 14 ounces, and that's not graphite weight but for free, I figure that's the way to go. My second choice would have been broomstick or aluminum tubing, which is a bit pricier.
I wanna try a simple can stove, and a Dakota fire pit. Both more efficiently heat. There's a concept I've been reading about called a wood gasifier stove, which burns super hot, clean, and thoroughly. If I can pull that off with a DIY example, I'll be super happy. Both types of fires are safer too because they are enclosed at least somewhat. The pit method takes more work but can be more easily cleaned up and no trace being left after being extinguished.
I'll try baking bread using two aluminum trays stacked with rocks in the bottom one to give space and some parchment paper in the top so heat is more evenly distributed and doesn't as likely burn, and it won't stick at all. Sure, it's a little more weight, but I eat bread a lot. If I can pull off wood fire bread baking on long trips, I'm good to go! Flour is pretty weighty per calorie, though, but it's worth it.
5 pounds of pure whole wheat flour gives 7700 calories. I think when I hike I'll have 3000-4000 calorie days, so I can live two days on each 5 pounds. I'd carry oatmeal, which I believe is more calorie dense; not by much, though I just found out at 8600 calories for 5 pounds. Still, every pound counts. I won't give up my starches for anything, including lower weight. I'm strictly whole food-plant based diet for 16 months now.
I see thru hikers want quick cooking, with boiled water dishes and such, or no cooking, but I have the time. If I get down a baking method that is easy and consistent, I will post my results so everybody can use it if they want. No need to reinvent the wheel, so to speak. That's why I watch Darwin!

    hey Mr Darwin.
Loving the filming you've done so far, i wasn't planning to comment till the end, but halfway point seems like a good place.
I felt compelled when you said you lost your Spork. Thats a real bummer, iv'e always said with a quality metal spork, you will either lose it, or leave it in your will, as they last forever. Recently iv'e had a bit of paranoia about losing mine. Especially after leaving my favourite sit pad in a bus shelter. I always try the turn around like a napping dog before you leave anywhere, i only seem to do a full check when camping, lunching and rest stops i'm not always as strict. But back to the spork. i'll be praying you get it back, but i believe thats unlikely, but if you do, or the next one you own. Wrap some brightly coloured tape of paracord round it, Electrical tape is best, as it comes in many colours. That way its easier to spot if you drop it on the ground. and as you know, a bit of tape is often useful for other stuff.
i'm looking forward to the 2nd half of your trail hike, i'm gonna ration my self to 3 parts a week to make it last longer. so i guess you will see Canada when i see Christmas. iv'e watched a few pct vids in the last few years, and i'm always amazed. iv'e always said, the guys who do that are basically well disciplined athletes, that will unfortunately never get a gold medal.
Good luck on all your future hikes.
    Gary Hertfordshire England.
