Watching in 2023. I am a Texas Route66 Association member and live in Amarillo. The association just restored the Phillips station on McLean this past year. Now we are raising money and working on he Super 66 Kaiser station in Alanreed. If you are ever in the area again. Don’t hesitate to shoot me a message. I remember going through Shamrock, TX in 1976 before the I-40 bypass opened. Busy as hell because all I-40 traffic came straight through town. Those Panhandle towns east of Amarillo, and Tucumcari, NM, were some of the last ones to be bypassed. I think by 1980 they had all been bypassed. Great to see some of the Route 66 history of those towns being preserved.

After seeing some of the missed takes that were left in while editing...I would love to see someone do a behind the scenes with Justin on one of these travels.
I can't imagine how much effort he puts into these but it is very much appreciated by my family and I.

Awesome vlog as usual. I agree, why did neon lights ever go out of style. The neon looks so cool, especially against the dark night sky. I can just imagine how things looked back in the day with lots of neon.
More interesting sites, and Ramone's place!! Well, the inspiration, at least. I am learning to appreciate the neon. It was around when I was young; glad it was gone, but now wishing it would return....
I was born in Shamrock, Tx. My mom is from Wellington, tx, about 30 miles from there. They have a parade every year in March for St. Patrick's Day, plus a carnival. It's 😎 for you to put Shamrock on the map!!

It's great to see there are other "neon freaks" like myself in this world 🌎!! Fell in love 💕 with neon signs as a kid riding home at night from our Grandma's house in Detroit watching all the cool neon signs everywhere!!! Especially sweet sign on a bar called Joe D's on Ford Rd in Garden City outside of Detroit near our house 🏠 in Inkster, Michigan - it was a champagne glass with bubbles in blue 💙 n pink neon. I remember it to this day n I am 66 yrs old. It was the catalyst that made me a total night person n neon freak!!!
After we met on the Route in Missouri, I've become a fan. We also loved the Conoco in Shamrock but didn't get to see it at night. Thanks for that.
Having kissed the real Blarney Stone - I am remind of the revelation that - the tourists kiss the Blarney Stone during the day - the locals piss on it at night. Thanks for doing an intelligent, thoughtful and well-produced (as in containing actual production values) vlog!

Cool! I stayed at the Western Motel in Shamrock too, when I drove Route 66 last autumn (Chicago to Santa Monica)! Not that I expected it to, but looks like my inscription at the Bug Ranch must not have survived -- my tagging at the Cadillac Ranch didn't even make it 10 minutes.… One of these days, if I can ever make the opportunity happen, I want to make the drive again.
I've driven past the cross in Effingham so many times and I was really confused about when you decided to ditch Route 66 and head to Illinois haha. It's good to know there's another one and I'd love to go and see it some day!
At 9:17, the roof and garage door were still in place (though caving in) when I visited in March of 2016. Apparently they got bad enough that someone decided to remove them.

Thank you! I will never need to drive to the Northern end of my state to see all these incredible structures myself! Imagine how discouraging it is to spend hours and hours of driving only to realize you are still in the same state! The most tedious part is that there is almost nothing to see or do along the way.

My grandpa was in the CCC as well back in the early 50s to early 80s
My husband and I own a house built exactly in 1930 and the red brick was not painted over like other houses in our historic district.

during the beginning of depression my grandparent had a sheep ranch north of belle fourche sd (11,000 acres). and during that time they sold off all the sheep and headed to calif. for a few months they came back to the ranch and bought cows.. ever since then it was a cattle ranch I read the dairies that was wrote by my grandmother and she talked about all the grasshoppers that covered the fence/

My son and I went from where we live in Apache Junction AZ on Superstition Mountain 👍 through Groom Texas Several years ago and also saw the big Cross, gift shop etc... Pretty Cool!!!

I'm sure I don't have to tell you but be sure to stop at the Round Barn and Pops in Arcadia and The Blue Whale in Catoosa. Also be on the lookout for an abandoned decaying rock gas station building between Arcadia and Luther. It's a tiny one room building, not much left but the walls, but makes for some good photos and there's a plaque (of sorts) with a bit of interesting history to read (murder and criminality, etc.).
Even though the OKC Bombing Memorial isn't on Rt. 66, you need to check it out. Also the Round Barn, and Soda Pops, both in Rt. 66.
Was prowrestling mentioned in the barbed wired museum? They use to have barbed wired matches back in the day.
I got to see some of that stuff while driving back home to Florida from Colorado, it awesome that you saw the same things I did. To be honest tho the drive is miserable and boring until you get to the road side attractions.

Love it. But I’ve read the first Phillips 66 station in Tx is Turkey Tx by a year. They have a Tx historical plaque honoring it, also have a newspaper from that year advertising it

The helicopter bit was awesome! My (late) boyfriend actually took a ride to the nearest cancer centre on a helicopter. He was crying all the way, haha. He hated heights.
Phillips 66 was adorable! I can definitely see why they were called dollhouses. I would have loved to see what the outfits of the gas station servicemen looked like! I know that might sound weird but these are old-timer outfits so there had to something cool and different about 'em! Stripes? Checkers? Hats?
Those dust/sand/dirt storms must have been terrifying. Definitely "end of the world" material, yikes.

Yeah! That's what I was thinking! There is an incredible amount of types of barbed wire, is it because the previous type iddn't work for one specific need? That's really cool! To think something so common was such a big deal back then. I wouldn't be surprised they had to make medicines for it! Bet there were a lot of accidents involving the Devil's Rope.

You actually filled in a few pieces of western expansion I have not thought about, pharmacy product development. I have a bottle, with fluid, from the 1920's of liniment oil. Those pesky liniment's -you know. I keep it next to my Back to the Future trinkets. I think I'm going to study a bit on apothecary. That was a good "stear" and that's no bull. Sure was a fun video. "What's that doing here?" LOL
Europe is older than the states but why we don't have a historic road with all his glory like the route 66

Auto-laundry does not mean "car wash." It was not long after automatic clothes washers were made popular (not invented...made popular) and many were coin operated.
The "auto" refers to the fact that rock and washboards were no longer needed, not the Chevy you brought the clothes in when you came to the auto-laundry.
