If you want to read more of Libba Bray and like a bit of fantasy in the Victorian era, I really recommend A Great and Terrible Beauty.
I've read it as a teen and found it again last year and I still loved it. It's intriguing and a bit tragic and also focuses on the impact societal expectations back then have on the main characters. 10/10 would recommend

HAHAHA Emily you should have just done the whole video with that book held up to your face !! Your camera is shading you, hard, girl haha.
My favourite read of the month is, hands down, The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue by Makenzi Lee. HILARIOUS !!!!
Also, I read All Systems Red on your recommendation and LOVED LOVED LOVED it. I am worried about the second one though but hoping it's not too bad. I am sorry you had a bad reading month. I hope this next month is much better for you.

Eragon was one of my favorite series growing up and was basically my introduction to fantasy. I tried rereading it a few years ago and it definitely does not hold up as I get older, but at the same time the author did write book 1 when he was like, 16 so I can kinda forgive him for that.

    • @giadavallone2213
      @giadavallone2213 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

It was also one of my first fantasy series together with Harry Potter, but i haven't reread it yet... However, I remember that the thing I liked the most was the relationship between Eragon and his dragon. I'd be curious to know if I still love it...

    • @meltingpages2028
      @meltingpages2028 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Giada Vallone I agree that their relationship was one of the best parts! I still love it for the nostalgia, but because I've read so many other fantasies, especially the ones Eragon pulls from it just didn't have the same feeling it did when I first read it.

I totally agree. Not to mention this is meant to be a middle grade book, so I don’t agree with people judging it so hard🤷🏼‍♀️

I'm on a similar boat. Coming from someone who's read Harry Potter as a child, Eragon's series was actually the first series I finished every book in. Before that, I just ended up with missing books or never got far enough in the series to have finished it.

I read Eragon in greek when I was like 15 and I loved it! Finished the whole series and have read the books multiple times since (except from book 2, which I didn't care for). Interestingly enough I tried rereading Eragon in english as well and I found it quite boring, which is weird since I find books are usually better in the language they are originally written...

Well i still like Eragon and the end of the series was not completely predictable. Tastes are subjective so no hard feelings. I also read before the Count of Monte Cristo. The begning seemed slow for me, but half way through i really enjoyed and couldn't put it down. Still reading Outlander,: the fiery cross. I'm in page 739 of 1327. Hope i can finish it soon

I read like 10-14 books a month from March and suddenly I was sick of reading so much because I read so many great books and when I read a bad one, I was like... uhhhhh. I feel your pain! July for me is just a shit month, period. Too damn hot, my kids are home and driving me bananas, the days are SO LONG... bring me fall!! As for your books, I'd agree with you. I tried reading Eragon and gave up at like 50 pages. The only Swanson I've read is Her Every Fear, and it was just meh for me. I also love Murderbot, but haven't read book 2 for exactly what you're talking about. Even in the first book, I kinda skimmed some of the battle/action scenes, and I wasn't entirely sure what all was happening, I just wanted to get more of Murderbot's inner dialogue. Sorry you had such a sucky month, hope that it gets better!

Oh yeah Dumas is always sassy. One of the best narrative voices of all times. If you like monsieur le Comte, you should start on the Musketeers' SAGA (3-5 books depending how they're split up) which is like the 19th century's Fast & Furious, but also ends up being really touching and profound.

Emily, I just started watching your channel and really enjoy it. I've read a couple of your recommendations. I loved The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August and All Systems Red. I'm halfway through Dark Matter, but so far I feel like he is ''telling'' not ''showing''. I also finished The Road to Little Dribbling by Bill Bryson, it was okay. His classic a Walk in The Woods is hilarious and one of my all time faves, if you haven't read that, consider taking a look. It is informative, but most of all, so,so funny. I hope you find your way out of your slump. Thanks for your thoughts on so many books!

A book I recently finished, I enjoyed, is Free the Darkness by Kel Kade. I'd categorize it under adventure fantasy. Trouble is, I can only find it on Kindle and Audible. If you subscribe to Kindle Unlimited you can at least get the Kindle version. This is a book I had purchased a while back and just never got to. I finally listened to it, then immediately got online and purchased the second book. Then finished the second book, and immediately grabbed the 3rd. Now I anxiously await the 4th to be released later this year.

Ah...sucks that you didn't enjoy Eragon...it was the book that got me into reading in the first place...though I must have been like 13...the premise of an orphaned farm boy becoming a dragon rider and wielding magic was too good...I would say that if I do reread it now, after being exposed to the likes of Branson Sanderson and VE Schwab, my standard of fantasy writing has indeed been set...but the series would always hold that nostalgic value, and I am curious as to the future books by Christopher Paolini, including the supposed Inheritance Book 5...

Good to know I was not the only one who did not like the sequel to All the Boys I've Loved Before. I read it a few years ago, I think pretty close to when it came out and don't have ANY desire to pick up the third one. &I agree with you too, that it even ruined the first book for me a little. Eragon was my favorite series when I was a kid, it was my first ever high-fantasy book and I thought of it as Lord of Rings just with dragons and I really loved it... The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my top 5 favorite books but I hadn’t read it in about 10 years so when you mentioned it, I decided to reread because I was fuzzy on the details. I decided to listen to the 49 hour audiobook read by John Lee and was not disappointed. Great audiobook and the story was as great as I remembered, I knew the narrator was sassy but I had forgotten just how much sarcasm and sass was there. And who doesn’t love some epic vengeance best served cold, it’s just too good.

😂 Your review of Jurassic Park spot on! As a parent I can attest to the fact that kids have an uncanny ability to sense stressful situations and make them worse (or maybe it’s just mine lol). I agree Eragon was horrible and believe it or not it’s the best book of the series, I was lied to and read them all total waste of time.

I had quite a good reading month. I liked most of what I read and really liked/loved some of it. My favourites:
birds art life death, it's a tiny non fiction full of quiet observations
written in red, a fantasy book. It's probably not objectively a good book, but I was just so into it.
And also Pip bartletts guide to magical creatures was a fun and utterly charming middle grade.

I recently read The Three Musketeers by Dumas and definitely agree! His language feels so modern and quick to read. I didn't love the treatment of female characters and some of the plot was frustrating, but I definitely enjoyed the writing.

Hey Emily. I am sorry to hear about you having such a bad reading month, but at the same time I am relieved to hear about why different books were so bad. I am currently working on a few different reading projects because my mood keeps on changing. First, I started reading on my kindle fire the massage therapy textbook the Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Claire Davis. There is a course that comes with this book that I can use to renew my massage therapist license in November of this year. I am also re- listening to the 3rd Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. My last 2 books that I will try to pick up when I have time is The Book of Eddie by Meghan MacLean Weir and China Rich Girlfriend by Kevin Kwan. They have all been fun reads which means I will most likely be in a slump later on. I hope that your next month is much better. Julie

I couldn't stop giggling at the camera focus! If you put The Count of Monte Cristo on a shelf in another video, maybe a post it on his face will keep the camera from betraying you. XD

Wow, I plan to read Jurassic Park in August! I tried to read it when the movie came out but I was too young to understand a lot of it so now I think I'll like it a lot more :) Since you read it I'm even more excited to pick it up!

I bought a shower speaker because of you it's a little acorn. Definitely getting more reading done because of this. Thanks for the idea.

It's really surprising how quickly it accumulates! If you only listen to an audiobook in the shower daily for 10-15mins that can be a whole book more read a month!

We all have crappy reading months sometimes, though it sucks when it happens. I also hope Booktubeathon is fun for you! (Also I am so happy you liked Jurassic Park! I also liked Lost World- but the former was a lot better)

I really loved Eragon as a kid, so I'm really intrigued to reread it to see if my opinion changed since I'm grown up!
I want to read Jurassic Park! The film scared me as a kid so never picked it up xD
Oh, don't listen to people, it's normal not to love all the books you read, just as you said! Keep reading, I love your videos!!

I read Jurassic Park and Eragon out of the wrap-up. Honestly, I get why people might not like Eragon or any of its sequels, but it ended up being the first series I finished every book for. Before that, there were books I didn't really get to read (for example, I only read the last 2 books (not counting Cursed Child because why would you), part of the 4th and 5th books, as well as Book 1 for Harry Potter) or just hadn't finished at the time (Dark Tower comes to mind here because I wanted to read Wind Through the Keyhole before Wolves of the Calla, so I didn't continue until 2015).

The third book of to all the Boys ive love before is really good! Definately the Best out of the three. It doesnt have a love triangle, but rather it focuses on teen problems, my favourite Being "about to go to Collage" struggles

I had a great reading month-The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, The Long Walk, and A Closed and Common Orbit, which I loved even more than The Long Way to A Small Angry Planet! I just bought Record of A Spaceborn Few and am excited to read it and Elantris next month. :)

BookswithEmilyFox I literally finished The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo in a day! All the books were great, but that one was simultaneously an easy read, while still having depth and emotion!

In All the boys trilogy..Did anyone else think the little sister Kitty was really annoying? No one else seems to think so though. I know she's the little pampered sister and all that..but still I found that her bratty behaviour was entertained a little too much 😕🤷🏻‍♀️

I've been reading City of Brass and I am in such a slump, even though the story is so interesting but I feel like its a bit slow-paced, or maybe it's my reading that's slow. I don't know. :( I still want to finish it but it's going so SLOWWWW!
