    What's the most disappointing book you've read in 2017?
    I just realized I should have included two more... Jane Eyre (how is that romantic?!) and And Then There Were None (bored..)!
    PS. I know my auto focus was being a biatch, I'm pretty sure it's due to the cover of "IT"... another reason to hate covers with faces :P

      More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera had a great average rating, turns out it's the most annoying book I've ever read

      Uprooted (the number 1 worst book I've ever read), The Lions of Al Rassan, A Gathering of Shadow, A Conjuring of Light, Night Circus, Sleeping Giants, Every Heart a Doorway. These are all the books that have so many praises and ended up disappointing me! Come to think of it.. almost all these books are on your list too.. xD great list, Emily! Also that IT scene.. yuck...

      THINK ABOUT THE FEMAAAALES!!

    • @HanQ28
      @HanQ28 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      BookswithEmilyFox That’s the thing. Sexists usually see their world as people (aka men) who read books + women. And a lot of them are so self-centred that they have no idea what offends women. They probably think that only terms like “saggy balls” are uncomfortable to read for all of “mankind” ;))

    • @alanmatkovic3221
      @alanmatkovic3221 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BookswithEmilyFox most of the women actually on goodreads didn’t have a problem like you, but yet you act like you’re a women advocate and that all women are looking for triggers in books to act offended. You automatically dismiss men’s opinions yet disable commenting on your review.
      It’s illogical how you think women being self conscious of their body is sexist, especially women who train a lot. There’s a reason King Rhagadul puts down Karris for her too masculine (for his tastes) body on his end while Gavin loves her body and her strength doubly so because of that. Just shows you know nothing about sports and mentality. I trained female kickboxers and they often had the same problems, even when they were extremely competitive and capable. People are self conscious and will always be. Doesn’t take from them being badass. If you think a woman needs to be Mary Sue and extremely confident to be realistic, you live in a YA fantasy world. Maybe Vampire Diaries would be more you style? Like any people who nitpick triggers to make a point, you continently avoid mentioning the “sexist” lore that women live longer, are better drafters and can draft more accurate because they are born with “better” eyes. That doesn’t make you twitch, but mentioning someone’s boobs does. Karris is badass and wonderful for 99%% readers. She is sometimes insufferable, but so is Gavin. She is flawed, he is doubly so. If you actually read the further books you would know why she is still hung up on Gavin (Dazen).
      To add further injury, you declare the author sexist. Following that logic, I declare you sexist too because if the author was a female there is no doubt in my mind you wouldn’t make that degratory accusation. Seems today it’s enough to be a sensitive reviewer looking for triggers to be found capable, not unlike the film industry I guess.

    I'm not sure I want to read The Black Prism now. I feel like the sexism is so childish on the author's part. There are so many other high fantasy books that I need to read and I'm going to prioritize those over The Black Prism

    • @BookswithEmilyFox
      @BookswithEmilyFox  6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      It was childish!! That's why I did the air quotes when I said adult fantasy because I can't imagine the target audience to be anything than young teenage boys!

    • @alanmatkovic3221

      Don’t listen to her. Most women on goodreads don’t think even closely the same as her. Read the book and be your own judge. The only people seeing sexism is the sexists themselves. Notice how she doesn’t include how women are better and more capable drafters from the get go just because biology. That suits her agenda.

      Camila Lecaros I'm currently struggling through the Raven Boys too! I was really looking forward to reading this one but so far I'm not getting the hype. Now that I'm halfway through it's starting to pick up a bit but I still find myself not wanting to read it... I'll finish it but as of now I'm not continuing the series. I've read so many books in a row that I really really liked so I feel like this one is putting me in a reading slump a bit.

    • @BookswithEmilyFox
      @BookswithEmilyFox  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I read it last year so it's not 100% clear anymore but does it feel like there are too many ideas being shoved all in one book? Because I remember being confused as to where this whole thing was going...

    • @JennV-B
      @JennV-B 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BookswithEmilyFox I have zero ideas where this book is going! And I have a bad feeling that things won't be even close to being resolved by the end of this book which is frustrating when it took so long to get started. Kind of like that extra long prologue thing you mentioned. I won't know until I actually finish it though which hopefully will be this year because I'm anxious to start something new! What should I read next? The Kiss of Deception or The Winner's Curse? I bet that's a tough one for you lol because they are both your recommendations 😜

    • @BookswithEmilyFox
      @BookswithEmilyFox  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes!!! It's also a book that felt like a prologue!!
      Oh my!! Well they're both good but keep in mind they are fantasy-romance... I think the Winner's Curse is more addictive though! 😂 There's more political intrigue and less war compare to Kiss of Deception (although the war stuff is more book 2-3) so it depends on your taste!

    For me it was probably the second and third book in the His Dark Materials series. I absolutely loved the first one, and I feel like he kind of went off on a tangent and didn't really wrap up anything, too tied up in his theology to really have the characters make sense anymore. Then again I just adored the world building of the first book and Lyra's childlike perspektive on it, which both kinda... felt washed out after the first book. Still a good read, I just expected a lot more after the Golden Compass.

      There is zero sexism there. Are you capable of your own opinion or do you base your life on a strangers opinions that differs from 99% other reviewsers? Please tell. Also, she’s the first reviewer I saw called the author himself sexist. She’s a heavy outliner. Look at that as you will. But it’s heavily disturbing you won’t read a great book because someone random on the internet got triggered by 0.01% of the book.

Agreed, the "romance" is cringey as all hell and doesn't really make sense, but the story overall is so, so beautiful! I'm about 1/4 of the way through The Black Prism and was starting to notice not only the sexism, but also the ugly superiority complex and toxic-masculinity-fueled angst between Gavin and literally everyone else, and was looking for some insight on if it would ever get resolved. I hadn't seen anybody talk about any of these issues in the other reviews i've seen, and it's super disappointing that, knowing how rough the rest of the book is, I'll probably put it down. Thanks!

      BookswithEmilyFox I actually quite enjoyed reading it after I’ve watched the show! There isn’t much deviance from the books. Female lead is strong but yep it’s got a lot of romance lol!! I know you aren’t much into that. I love it though!

      whutzat I did enjoy the first one the most, I’ve only reached the middle of the second book, and I really get annoyed at how the story progresses because I’ve caught up with the TV show, but I love characters so much I just can’t get enough. Emily you really should start because it will take you a while to get through them all because I definitely need breaks in between.

    Thank you for your honest review of the Black Prism! I LOVE adult fantasy (Brandon Sanderson is my favorite author!) and bought the first couple of books in that series to read based on other "glowing" reviews from other TH-camrs... I wonder if I will feel the same as you. Also agree that Illuminae was much better than Gemina. I read both books as books and not audio. I think you need to read it to "experience" the story better? I plan to read Obsidio when it's released next year. :)

    Hello! New subscriber here. I had to subscribe after your “of course” reaction. Also, having the same name! That was priceless! Thank you for giving me info about It and the Black Prism. Even though I never planned on reading both of those books, it’s nice to have the knowledge about them now. If the Black Prism was shorter, I might have read it because it had a cool premise. But now I know that I don’t ever want to read that much sexism. I never, ever planned on reading It but now I definitely know to stay far, far, faaaaaaar away from it!! Now to continue with your video. Just wanted to comment with this bit before I forgot what I wanted to say.

    I read It for the first time this year and I’m with you. I was so disappointed, angry, and it brought about so many questions. Why did he think that was necessary? Why did he want to write about that? Why didn’t his editors omit it? Ugh. I was happy to not see it in the movie.

    hi Emily i was wondering if you could do spoiler reviews of books, just so that after i read a certian book i can see like what you thought of a specific scene or so, the Stephen king thing really bothered me and no one like talked about it, but also there have been some parts in books that have made me smile or cry and I'd like to hear which parts in what books did that for you. oohh and i love your reviews, although we have slightly different taste in books, i have found some of my favorite books from your bad bin, but you describe them so well that regardless of your opinion on it i can tell if I'd like it or not so keep up the good content

    I so agree with you about “It”. That did spoil the book for me....I did however after your review buy, read and loved Sleeping Beauties. I had not picked up a Stephen King book for years before these last two. I know this video was about disappointing books but my favourite I read this year was Lori Lansens “The Mountain Story”. Lori is a fantastic Canadian novelist. I’m a bit biased as I grew up with Lori and several of her books are set in the area of southwestern Ont. where we were from. I have loved this channel Em! I can’t wait to hear your reviews for 2018!

    I have just discovered your channel (I was watching Bookish Realms' videos and yours was on the "Up Next" list) and this is the second video I've watched. I have enjoyed them, though I disagree about a couple of the books. I absolutely loved Uprooted and the Wizard of Earthsea. Mostly, though, I wanted to recommend the audio of World War Z. I did like the book better than the movie, but the audio is a different animal altogether. It's abridged and each interview has it's own voice actor, some of whom are quite famous and, I think, bring a lot to the story.

    i dont understand how people give books like the black prism such high ratings and completely ignore the sexist parts. i understand the time is not the same as ours today, but there is a limit to how much the author shoves it in our faces. I found your channel just now and seriously preach!!! its so cheap!!! i cant ever read a book with a character who we're supposed to root for, or read about . ..

    Wow, I'm so glad I didn't buy Black Prism like I was going to. Honestly, being a woman in mid-20's, reading from a child's perspective is super hard. Especially if the characters are like 12-16 year old boys. Just, nope.

    • @BookswithEmilyFox
      @BookswithEmilyFox  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've noticed a pattern for sure. Not all of them, for example a few of the YA Contemporary coming of age books I have read this year were perfectly fine, but now I'm realizing the characters were mostly bi or homosexual... I think it mostly has to do with the sexist attitude too often seen as "normal" or "normal for his age".
      The whole attitude of boys will be boys is just awful.

    • @Never4mind
      @Never4mind 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's interesting and disappointing. And very rarely do young characters have anyone correcting them or teaching them about how to talk and think about girls their age. It's honestly so rare because most of the time in YA books the young main characters are described as superior to their parents or other adult characters and they are more of a side characters or hindrances for the main protagonist's story line. But then again there are also books where kids seem way older than they actually are and that's not pleasant to read either. For example, the Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. I don't remember if you've read it. But I so wish I could find more books that tackle these topics differently. D: Although, I do get that as an adult it might just be hard to write from a kid's perspective. But it's super yikes if an author's own sexism and worldviews show in the behavior of their characters. Lol, sorry for the length of this response, I enjoy your channel a lot, by the way! :)

    This was so interesting to see how many popular books were disappointing, because your points are valid! Just because it's a big-name book doesn't make it automatically wonderful, and I've been coming to realize that lately. I haven't read all of these, but a lot of them are at least on my TBR.
