Judy Garland is THE definitive Dorothy, and convinces as a young preteen girl, despite being 16 at the time. It's sad to think of her tragic life, how she was forced into show business with her sisters at a young age, and dealt with substance abuse, before passing away at the young age of 47 years old.
This is probably because it was originally an allegory for the movement to base the US dollar on silver (the shoes) instead of gold (the Yellow Brick Road). That's why it's the land of "Oz" (short for "ounce").
Guys! There is a soviet fanfic bookseries which was presented to us as an original creation. It is a pure socialist propaganda. Imagine my surpise when I first encountered "Oz" story.
@@digifreak90facts.. their Oz plot lines were especially messy. But that’s because they ditched them halfway through when Oz the Great and Powerful wasn’t as successful as they were hoping. So they cancelled the plans they had for Oz and Dorothy. Plus the actress who played Ruby was busy with other projects so they couldn’t continue the Dorothy/Ruby romance. That’s why it feels like Zelena is just kinda… there.. for the rest of the show. They never really had anything interesting to do with such an iconic character bc they abandoned their original ideas for her.
I was a child during the 80s creepy children’s film era, and I’d honestly rank Return to Oz second only to The Dark Crystal for having creepy-cool character design and effects for it’s time. It holds up even for adults just because there’s so much cool stuff to look at. And mombi is creepy AF.
At one time it was rumored Warner Bros was looking into them for a replacement after the HP films finished. I really wish someone would do an adaptation that stays faithful to the Baum books. I'm so tired of musicals and revisionist versions. Oz is plenty shocking without having to through sex and drugs into the mix.
I know it would never top the list, but I need some exposure to the Disney version. It's my favorite version, especially Clara, and almost nobody talks about it.
Id also love to see your take on all the diff versions of Alice in Wonderland, if you are interested in that IP at all. Especially like the differences of weirdness between the books, disney obviously, 1999 version with martin short, tim burton's take, etc.
@@Savanna-e9m the american mcgee games may be way too much to get into and may need its own video. But itd be cool to see the channel comment on her twisted outfits, since the fashion in those games are very fascinating
I JUST realised the connection between Ruby and Dorothy in Once Upon a Time. Could have been a coincidence, but even if this version uses the silver slippers, Ruby’s name could be a nod to the Ruby Slippers!
The Wizard of Oz was always intended to be Judy Garland’s big break into a leading lady. The only reason why talks about Temple came about was because the stinky higher ups were worried with the amount of money they already spent to get the rights, and for everything yet to come, that new comer Judy wouldn’t be enough to draw out the box office. Judy was fought for by the crew, and the role was 100% hers from that point. Love this ranking! ‘39 Dorothy absolutely deserves the crown, and Disney Return to Oz is so underrated.
Yes! I was going to comment this. The rights to the Wizard of Oz were bought with Judy specifically in mind. They had an unofficial audition with Shirley but that was just to please the higher ups. Supposedly a deal between Shirley’s studio and MGM fell through and that’s why the unofficial audition never went anywhere, but there are no records of this deal ever being discussed. Likely that’s what the higher ups told people they had roped into banking on Shirley.
Judy Garland as Dorothy was what first introduced me to musicals. Over the Rainbow is still to this day my favorite song of all time. With all the pressure she was put under by MGM to fit the mold for this movie at just 16 years old, she gave one of the greatest performances not just of her career, but in film history period. There will never be another like her. 🌈☁
Fun fact. Dortothy Gale was created in honor of a girl named Dorothy who died during a hurricane. Im not sure how big Baum thought this series would be but he immortalized this girl.
I'm so so so Happy were you placed Return to Oz it's so good and it's such a shame the full ran in to budgetary and other production issues it truly could have been a masterpiece.
Judy is just iconic as Dorothy and to hear the behind the scenes of what's happened to her is so devastating like she deserves so much more of what she's been treated.
Dorothy Gale is literally one of fiction's greatest heroes. She's still managed to keep her good heart in spite of everything she's been through, and that is really admirable. In my opinion, Dorothy is one of pop culture's most famous paragon heroines. 11/10 video. Keep up the good work. 😁👍🏾😁👍🏾😁👍🏾 Side note: From everything I've seen and read, including watching the whole movie, Journey Back To Oz is the true sequel to the OG '39 classic. Why? 4 things. 1. Obviously, the casting of Judy Garland's daughter, Liza Minnelli, as Dorothy, was, in my humble opinion, meant to evoke the exact same version of the character her mother is famous for. 2. Dorothy's song at the beginning of the movie, "A Faraway Land," is basically that movie's version of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow." Not only that, but if you listen closely as Dorothy sings, you can tell that Liza did her best to channel her mother's vocal prowess she had as Dorothy. 3. Not only is a tornado the same way Dorothy gets to Oz, but she literally gets KNOCKED UNCONCIOUS before she and Toto go to Oz. In both movies, a piece of furniture (a windowpane in the original 1939 film, a fence door in Journey Back To Oz) is blown onto poor Dorothy's head by the twister's winds, knocking her unconscious. 4, At the end of the movie, after Dorothy is sent home, she's shown WAKING UP at the fence and running back to the farm, happy to be home again, *proving* that the *entire adventure* was a DREAM just as it was in the OG film. Journey Back To Oz is the underrated true sequel to the 1939 classic, The Wizard of Oz. These are all just my thoughts and opinions, but I would love to hear yours as well as anyone else's perspective on this subject of continuity between the two films. Just be sure to stay kind and respectful in your replies. God bless y'all! 😊🥰👍🏾❤️ Final note: Judy Garland's the DEFINITIVE Dorothy. She made the character an iconic heroine for generations to enjoy and look up to, and we love her for it. Rest in peace, Judy. We'll take care of Oz for you with our own ruby slippers. Tyrants look out and wicked witches beware! 🌪👠👠
I'm a Return to Oz (1985) and The Wiz truther, those are my go to for this canon. Some of these I'd never heard of and want to search out. I'm loving the artistry in Journey Back to Oz! Thank you for the thorough overview.
I love Return to OZ (1985) and personally think Fairuza Balk is the most acute in casting, not just age but of personality, of Dorothy Gale. I love that the dark fantasy movement allowed the film to lean into the weird, even surrealist, aspects of Baum's books. The Gnome king, wheelers, and Mombi terrified me as a child. Dorothy helping Ozma from the mirror is still one of my favorite scenes in film.
I'll always be mad about emerald city's cancellation, I loved that series and it's production design, I think it was very cool. 1939 movie will always have a special place in my heart and I keep dreaming about having a pair of ruby slippers. I would love to see you ranking Alice in Wonderland versions.
To say that OUAT is the first to show a love interest for Dorthy is an understatement, because technically another story gives her a love interest. But as you said this lineup is based on tv/movie versions of Oz
I only know of the original, The Wiz, and Return to Oz. I didn't realize there are so many different versions of the story and not to mention, a remake being in the works with Wicked coming out in 2 days.
I also love the way Dorothy is portrayed in Boomerang’s “Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz” animated show too! She’s spunky and courageous but still shows vulnerability. That’s how I imagined her when I first read the Wizard of Oz as a kid. Ironic because this cartoon is based on the MGM movie. But they add characters like Ozma and the Gnome King which I absolutely love. I highly recommend this series.
Legends of Oz will always have a special place in my heart since it was the only version I was familiar with until yesterday when I watched the 1939 version for the first time, so I’m glad to see legends of Oz being discussed and it was super interesting to learn about the different versions of Dorothy. Great videos!
I am honestly amazed every time you do a ranking video, how brilliant you are at summarising stories. That is not to ignore any of your excellent insight, taste and wisdom on your subjects but like… damn. Good synopses is a serious skill, and you are absolutely exceptional at it.
as a child wizard of oz was definitely my favorite but when i was 10 , found 1985 return to oz at a blockbuster and is has been a WRAP since !!!! one of my favorites !
I had no idea that a Muppets Wizard of Oz movie came out the year I started highschool which was only....almost... 20 years ago (stares solemnly into the distance). Damn lol
although the lea michele movie was terrible i have so many cultural memories of it for some reason. i remember toys, posters, ads of lea in the studio for the movie in between episodes of glee. i only saw it once but i remember it being a moment for some reason
i remember it too and i was about 7 at the time so i dont even know how i have so memories of it lolll i have such a memory of seeing the trailer everywhere
I think I remember seeing the fandango listing for years before it came out. Apparently the production for this was a complete mess to the point where SEVERAL people accused the filmmakers of scamming them out of money
I remember watching the Emerald City show and I really can't remember the romance at all but Tink's character and the Princess Ozma stuff were so cool to me back then. The show really had alot of potential if it wasn't so stuck on the edgyness
As an Oz series obsessed kid, I couldn't accept Jud Garland as Dorothy. Garland, from my tiny kiddo perspective, seemed like a full adult person acting childlike. I feel like kids are also super pedantic about any deviations from source material, and I resented every single change. As an adult I have come to appreciate the film for the classic that it is, but this video also made me realize there are surprisingly few great interpretations of Dorothy and explorations of of Baum's full material. More please!
I might have to rewatch The Wiz because I remember NOT liking Diana Ross’ often quivering portrayal at all when I saw it. But as someone in their early 30’s still struggling to find my footing, maybe I’ll identify with that part more now.
You're remembering it correctly 🤷 That movie has nothing to do with what The Wiz is supposed to be like. It's good on its own, but as an adaptation of The Wiz, it's terrible.
the original wizard of oz film will always be my favourite version, i watched it all the time with my ma as a kid. i love the wizard of oz so much that ive been dorothy gale for halloween seven times
so sad the wonderful galaxy of oz wasn’t included, a staple of my childhood.. but og the wizard of oz, return to oz, the wiz, and tin man are too! fun video c:
I have been trying to find the movie “legend of oz: Dorothy’s return” for a very long time Thanks to this video now I know which wizard of oz story I used to watch
After seeing The Wizard of Oz (1939) a million times growing up, Judy Garland along with the entire cast really bring the magic of the movie and storyline to life. ❤ Rest in Peace Frances Ethal Gumm aka Judy Garland.
Tbh, as much as I love Judy Garland, Fairuza Balk is just… magnetic as Dorothy! Her innocence was just so pure and authentic (Tbf, Balk was about 8 during production). I haven’t seen anyone come close to her version.
Even though I love Judy Garland I would at least be curious to see the alternate universe where Shirley Temple played Dorothy just because I know it would be SO different and I’m interested in just how much that would change the story.
They’re supposed to be making two adaptations of the Wizard of Oz soon! One based on the original book and the other being a remake of the MGM movie. I’m curious to see how they adapt the stories. And I hope whoever they get to play Dorothy isn’t going to be directed to give a carbon copy of Judy Garland’s performance and I also hope they don’t do the “unbothered girl boss” trope either. Playing Dorothy and making her character honor the performances before while still being new is gonna be a challenge. Alisha Weir is allegedly going to play Dorothy in Wicked, and I think that was an amazing idea. I think she could pull off the role if they cast her in a remake.
@ After the stone wall riots were kind of linked to Judy’s passing and since she was such an icon in the LGBT community they asked the question “Are you a friend of Dorothy’s?” As a secret code to see who’s who?
I love the original Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz (1939), I always wanted to be her, or rather, be in her "shoes". I always wanted a pair of the Ruby Slippers, despite that they're not cannon to the story. Theres just something so magical about them. But Judy Garland was just so iconic for Dorothy, that I cant imagine anyone else besides her when I picture Dorothy Gale in my head.
I never hear people talk about Emerald City, but I think of it often. I remember loving the visuals of the witches, the scarecrow, the girl with the mask. Disappointed we never had a conclusion for their stories. I feel they never really got a chance to find their groove.
i love this video so much omg!! you should consider maybe doing different versions of alice in wonderland? there’s been like a million adaptations going all the way back to 1915 even i think. love ur videos!!
I only just saw Return to Oz this week and absolutely loved it. Fairuza Balk was perfect in the role of Dorothy and I would actually put her above Judy on my list 😅
Muppets Wizard of Oz may not be good but i will always respect they used the four witches instead of lazily merging Glinda (the witch of the south) and the witch of the north
Keep it up on your work and this video and channel I love this video and channel Thanks you for your video and channel I love the wizard of Oz all franchise
I like the creativity 20th Century Oz employs for the plot. I’m a sucker for modern retellings of classic stories. And oh my god, OUAT’s version of Dorothy is so underdeveloped it’s aggravating. That lack of development translated to her and Ruby’s relationship.
25:05 I just realized something what if Dorothy is just Nancy, they were both mental asylum due to "their crazy imagination", and the reason why Nancy was trying to use magic it was due to for time in Oz and seeing different witches
@@JustGina724and it would make sense why whenever Nancy goes bad her outfits kind of resembled the wicked witch of the South, Andy would connect due to the crafts form of witchcraft, it comes from the witch not the actual power itself, the witch chooses who they want to be, either a good witch or a bad witch nothing magic and not their abilities
Fairuza Baulk all the way. Her acting and the film itself perfectly encapsulate the feeling of the story as a dark fairy tale without resorting to cheap gimmicks, and the girl herself is so talented that I never get bored of watching her.
the wizard of oz is a great movie but to be honest I never watched again after I watch the Wiz it just doesn't hold a candle in my eyes. Iam obsessed with is movie, but they could be because I'm a musical theater nerd and seeing an all black cast is just everything to me.
Hi! My favorite version of Dorothy was from an animated 80/90's series called Tales of the Wizard of Oz. It was on ABC I think, but I watched it on VHS as a kid. I loved everything about it! My favorite character was always Elfaba or the Wicked Witch of the West as she was known in 1939's classic film. Of course I wanted Dorothy to get home safely, but I always wondered what happened to the witch to make her wicked. Yes, I'm a huge Wicked fan too! Gracias for this video.
11:17 *Yes. Alice is curious, stubborn, haughty, and demanding. So what? It makes her a much more interesting character, and even relatable. So I don't know where you're getting "unlikable" from.*
Judy Garland hate me all you want i have a very close attachment to her watching the wizard of oz movie so many times as a kid and even dressed up as her with a toto in a basket 🧺 she will always be number one in my heart forever and always
Diana Ross as Dorothy in The Wiz is what effectively killed her acting career. She wasn’t even that bad at it and she was so amazing in her debut film role as Billie Holiday that she earned an Oscar nomination which a lot of actors and actresses in their own film debuts don’t even get.
Tin Man is my fav adaptation of the Wizard of Oz, but yeah I found DG to be a bit boring. I did love her journey to find where she belongs and that hit me hard, which is why I love it. My only regret was not recording this mini-series.
That was fun and I loved seeing all the versions I knew nothing about! I wonder if you would consider doing a retrospective of Once Upon a Time. Your particular take on it (character, story, costume) would be amazing, although I also fear it would be a slog to do.
"Rusty" The Tinwoodsman, poor guy; he actually has a name! "Nick" everyone always seems to forget he called "Nick Chopper" just like his bodiless organic twin.
21:05 This dude scarred me for life...straight-up nightmare fuel, but I kept coming back to Blockbuster for more!! This movie is just THAT good!!! 🌪👠😱❤📼
I came here to see some Return to Oz appreciation and I am so glad that's what I got! Fairuza Balk will always be who I picture when someone talks about Dorothy because she was the first one I ever saw in that role (and Return to Oz being one of my two favourite movies, the other being Labyrinth), but there have been so many (more or less) interesting takes on the character and it was great to see them all introduced side by side. Obviously, Judy Garland will always be THE Dorothy 😌

(She plays Dorothy as a snivelling wimp with self esteem issues 🤷)
I would love if you did a ranking of the wicked witches. Sometimes they can be just as fabulous and fun as Dorothy, if not more.
the original wizard of oz film will always be my favourite version, i watched it all the time with my ma as a kid. i love the wizard of oz so much that ive been dorothy gale for halloween seven times
so sad the wonderful galaxy of oz wasn’t included, a staple of my childhood.. but og the wizard of oz, return to oz, the wiz, and tin man are too! fun video c:
I have been trying to find the movie “legend of oz: Dorothy’s return” for a very long time
Thanks to this video now I know which wizard of oz story I used to watch
After seeing The Wizard of Oz (1939) a million times growing up, Judy Garland along with the entire cast really bring the magic of the movie and storyline to life. ❤ Rest in Peace Frances Ethal Gumm aka Judy Garland.
My favourite is Candace as Dorothy in the Phineas and Ferb Special
Another banger video ❤ we’re so blessed
WE NEED YOUR WICKED MOVIE REVIEW!
Great video!
Your username is hilarious 😂
@AintThatJustTheWay 😁
the original 14 books are my favorite books of all time!! I've read them countless times. L Frank Baum's original Dorothy will always be my number 1!
Return to Oz actually combines elements from Ozma of Oz and Marvelous Land of Oz. Super underrated movie. I'm happy you ranked it 2. I totally agree.
Judy Garland will always be the queen “I am a friend of Dorothy’s” 🏳️🌈
The friend of Dorothy thing doesn’t make much sense
Once upon a time! Great show!
I only just saw Return to Oz this week and absolutely loved it. Fairuza Balk was perfect in the role of Dorothy and I would actually put her above Judy on my list 😅
I love the wizard of oz Tysm for making this ranking video!!!!
Dorothy became Alice twice 💀
Muppets Wizard of Oz may not be good but i will always respect they used the four witches instead of lazily merging Glinda (the witch of the south) and the witch of the north
Muppets oz was my favorite one along the classic one and the wiz
Keep it up on your work and this video and channel
I love this video and channel
Thanks you for your video and channel
I love the wizard of Oz all franchise
lost in oz such niche and i hate that nobody talk enough about it
I agree! I love the show, I’m glad she included it in the video.
I love wizard of oz it's part of my childhood.
Thanks for this now I need to watch those different adaptations
The wizard of oz making a comeback this year was not on my bingo card
I like the creativity 20th Century Oz employs for the plot. I’m a sucker for modern retellings of classic stories. And oh my god, OUAT’s version of Dorothy is so underdeveloped it’s aggravating. That lack of development translated to her and Ruby’s relationship.
A ranking of all the Alice in Wonderlands would be soooo fun! I’d love to see what you’d think! There’s so many!
Tin Man mentioned and thats all ive ever needed
25:05 I just realized something what if Dorothy is just Nancy, they were both mental asylum due to "their crazy imagination", and the reason why Nancy was trying to use magic it was due to for time in Oz and seeing different witches
It really gives, “Are you a good witch or a bad witch” a whole new meaning. I love this!
Judy Garland and Fairuza Balk.
She wasn’t even that bad at it and she was so amazing in her debut film role as Billie Holiday that she earned an Oscar nomination which a lot of actors and actresses in their own film debuts don’t even get.
i loooooove the wiz it’s so much fun to watch
Tin Man is my fav adaptation of the Wizard of Oz, but yeah I found DG to be a bit boring. I did love her journey to find where she belongs and that hit me hard, which is why I love it. My only regret was not recording this mini-series.
Zooey Deschanel is always typecast in that way, I am sure that she is much more as a person. Don't blame people for being typecast, blame studios.
1939 and the 1985 I’ve seen but I barely remember once upon a time Dorothy because I only watched it once
Muppets in Oz mentioned??? Hello, my childhood???
Ok but a brown fringe purse would make it look like she made a purse out of her dog ... Cruella style :*D
rank alice (of wonderland fame) versions next!
That was fun and I loved seeing all the versions I knew nothing about! I wonder if you would consider doing a retrospective of Once Upon a Time. Your particular take on it (character, story, costume) would be amazing, although I also fear it would be a slog to do.
Definitely do an Alice ranking next. There are so many versions and takes on the Alice in Wonderland books.
Definitely Judy and Fairuza as
1 & 2 …☔️🌈
Girl, just when I think I couldn’t love your channel more, you drop this! You rock!
"Rusty" The Tinwoodsman, poor guy; he actually has a name! "Nick" everyone always seems to forget he called "Nick Chopper" just like his bodiless organic twin.
The wizard of Oz and The Wiz are my favorites
I’ve never seen The Wiz and now it’s definitely on my Must Watch list!!
11:17-11:18 It Is So Great That Judy’s Daughter Got The Chance To Work With Margaret Hamilton Albeit As The Beloved Aunt Em
As a Kansan, I ❤ the Wizard of Oz
"Liked" for the unapologetic "lets not be assholes" at the beginning.
Was that Jim Belushi and not Dan Aykroyd? Were they both voice actors in that film?
