Judy Garland is THE definitive Dorothy, and convinces as a young preteen girl, despite being 16 at the time. It's sad to think of her tragic life, how she was forced into show business with her sisters at a young age, and dealt with substance abuse, before passing away at the young age of 47 years old.
This is probably because it was originally an allegory for the movement to base the US dollar on silver (the shoes) instead of gold (the Yellow Brick Road). That's why it's the land of "Oz" (short for "ounce").
Guys! There is a soviet fanfic bookseries which was presented to us as an original creation. It is a pure socialist propaganda. Imagine my surpise when I first encountered "Oz" story.
Id also love to see your take on all the diff versions of Alice in Wonderland, if you are interested in that IP at all. Especially like the differences of weirdness between the books, disney obviously, 1999 version with martin short, tim burton's take, etc.

I was a child during the 80s creepy children’s film era, and I’d honestly rank Return to Oz second only to The Dark Crystal for having creepy-cool character design and effects for it’s time. It holds up even for adults just because there’s so much cool stuff to look at. And mombi is creepy AF.
I JUST realised the connection between Ruby and Dorothy in Once Upon a Time. Could have been a coincidence, but even if this version uses the silver slippers, Ruby’s name could be a nod to the Ruby Slippers!
I'll always be mad about emerald city's cancellation, I loved that series and it's production design, I think it was very cool. 1939 movie will always have a special place in my heart and I keep dreaming about having a pair of ruby slippers. I would love to see you ranking Alice in Wonderland versions.
I'm so so so Happy were you placed Return to Oz it's so good and it's such a shame the full ran in to budgetary and other production issues it truly could have been a masterpiece.
although the lea michele movie was terrible i have so many cultural memories of it for some reason. i remember toys, posters, ads of lea in the studio for the movie in between episodes of glee. i only saw it once but i remember it being a moment for some reason
The Wizard of Oz was always intended to be Judy Garland’s big break into a leading lady. The only reason why talks about Temple came about was because the stinky higher ups were worried with the amount of money they already spent to get the rights, and for everything yet to come, that new comer Judy wouldn’t be enough to draw out the box office. Judy was fought for by the crew, and the role was 100% hers from that point. Love this ranking! ‘39 Dorothy absolutely deserves the crown, and Disney Return to Oz is so underrated.
Dorothy Gale is literally one of fiction's greatest heroes. She's still managed to keep her good heart in spite of everything she's been through, and that is really admirable. In my opinion, Dorothy is one of pop culture's most famous paragon heroines. 11/10 video. Keep up the good work. 😁👍🏾😁👍🏾😁👍🏾 Side note: From everything I've seen and read, including watching the whole movie, Journey Back To Oz is the true sequel to the OG '39 classic. Why? 4 things. 1. Obviously, the casting of Judy Garland's daughter, Liza Minnelli, as Dorothy, was, in my humble opinion, meant to evoke the exact same version of the character her mother is famous for. 2. Dorothy's song at the beginning of the movie, "A Faraway Land," is basically that movie's version of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow." Not only that, but if you listen closely as Dorothy sings, you can tell that Liza did her best to channel her mother's vocal prowess she had as Dorothy. 3. Not only is a tornado the same way Dorothy gets to Oz, but she literally gets KNOCKED UNCONCIOUS before she and Toto go to Oz. In both movies, a piece of furniture (a windowpane in the original 1939 film, a fence door in Journey Back To Oz) is blown onto poor Dorothy's head by the twister's winds, knocking her unconscious. 4, At the end of the movie, after Dorothy is sent home, she's shown WAKING UP at the fence and running back to the farm, happy to be home again, *proving* that the *entire adventure* was a DREAM just as it was in the OG film. Journey Back To Oz is the underrated true sequel to the 1939 classic, The Wizard of Oz. These are all just my thoughts and opinions, but I would love to hear yours as well as anyone else's perspective on this subject of continuity between the two films. Just be sure to stay kind and respectful in your replies. God bless y'all! 😊🥰👍🏾❤️ Final note: Judy Garland's the DEFINITIVE Dorothy. She made the character an iconic heroine for generations to enjoy and look up to, and we love her for it. Rest in peace, Judy. We'll take care of Oz for you with our own ruby slippers. Tyrants look out and wicked witches beware! 🌪👠👠
Judy Garland as Dorothy was what first introduced me to musicals. Over the Rainbow is still to this day my favorite song of all time. With all the pressure she was put under by MGM to fit the mold for this movie at just 16 years old, she gave one of the greatest performances not just of her career, but in film history period. There will never be another like her. 🌈☁
I might have to rewatch The Wiz because I remember NOT liking Diana Ross’ often quivering portrayal at all when I saw it. But as someone in their early 30’s still struggling to find my footing, maybe I’ll identify with that part more now.
I remember watching the Emerald City show and I really can't remember the romance at all but Tink's character and the Princess Ozma stuff were so cool to me back then. The show really had alot of potential if it wasn't so stuck on the edgyness
I only know of the original, The Wiz, and Return to Oz. I didn't realize there are so many different versions of the story and not to mention, a remake being in the works with Wicked coming out in 2 days.

I love Return to OZ (1985) and personally think Fairuza Balk is the most acute in casting, not just age but of personality, of Dorothy Gale. I love that the dark fantasy movement allowed the film to lean into the weird, even surrealist, aspects of Baum's books. The Gnome king, wheelers, and Mombi terrified me as a child. Dorothy helping Ozma from the mirror is still one of my favorite scenes in film.
I have been trying to find the movie “legend of oz: Dorothy’s return” for a very long time Thanks to this video now I know which wizard of oz story I used to watch

Hi! My favorite version of Dorothy was from an animated 80/90's series called Tales of the Wizard of Oz. It was on ABC I think, but I watched it on VHS as a kid. I loved everything about it! My favorite character was always Elfaba or the Wicked Witch of the West as she was known in 1939's classic film. Of course I wanted Dorothy to get home safely, but I always wondered what happened to the witch to make her wicked. Yes, I'm a huge Wicked fan too! Gracias for this video.

25:05 I just realized something what if Dorothy is just Nancy, they were both mental asylum due to "their crazy imagination", and the reason why Nancy was trying to use magic it was due to for time in Oz and seeing different witches
@@JustGina724and it would make sense why whenever Nancy goes bad her outfits kind of resembled the wicked witch of the South, Andy would connect due to the crafts form of witchcraft, it comes from the witch not the actual power itself, the witch chooses who they want to be, either a good witch or a bad witch nothing magic and not their abilities

I never hear people talk about Emerald City, but I think of it often. I remember loving the visuals of the witches, the scarecrow, the girl with the mask. Disappointed we never had a conclusion for their stories. I feel they never really got a chance to find their groove.
This is great content, thanks. I've been called Dorothy by a few ever since filling a tramping pack with 5 e-scooter batteries, and wiring them up my shoes with copper soles bolted on. This was a quick solution for increased range on an electric skateboard 80km inland one night in the freezing cold. Tapping my shoes together would have sent sparks flying.
I came here to see some Return to Oz appreciation and I am so glad that's what I got! Fairuza Balk will always be who I picture when someone talks about Dorothy because she was the first one I ever saw in that role (and Return to Oz being one of my two favourite movies, the other being Labyrinth), but there have been so many (more or less) interesting takes on the character and it was great to see them all introduced side by side. Obviously, Judy Garland will always be THE Dorothy 😌
The wizard of oz is iconic but as someone who's not into musicals or anything over saccharine, it has to be Return to Oz for me. This adaptation is probably what sparked my love of horror
I agree with your rankings of #2. Balk and #1 Judy Garland. While I am generally a fan of Diana Ross, I have nothing nice to say about Ross as Dorothy or the 1978 film adaptation of "THE WIZ". "RETURN TO OZ'S Balk gives an excellent performance under extremely difficult circumstances with a truly frightening and polarizing script. Filming of 1939's "THE WIZARD OF OZ" was equally as arduous, and we all know the abuses Judy Garland endured at MGM and elsewhere in her career. There is a good reason Judy Garland's Dorothy is #1. When I was a child I really liked a Russian cartoon, "Adventures in the Emerald City" (1999-2000). It was a short series containing 4 episodes and the last episode about princess Ozma was my favorite and surprisingly ahead of time with the themes.
I'll admit, I have a soft spot for Tin Man. I grew up LOVING it and watched it probably once a year throughout my teens. I was surprised, however, to see it ranked so high as even I know how cringey it is now lmao I'll def be checking out 1987 Return To Oz though cause that looks really good
Fun fact: Return to Oz (1964) was the very first animated tv special created by Rankin/Bass, who would release their first Animagic and Christmas special, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, later that year. Both of the specials share many of the same voice actors since Rankin/Bass worked with unionized VAs from Canada in their early days. While I think Return to Oz is a pretty mediocre special, I absolutely love its colorful, 60’s-era animation style, and a lot of the songs, especially the ones sung by Dorothy, are really sweet and nostalgic.
I bet the current tv industry could do an interesting spin on the Wizard of Oz books as an adventure saga a-la Stranger Things with a different vibe, you know? I'd like to see a full adaptation of the books at some point. I mean come on, it's been a century and there's so many adventures to adapt!
In regards to the Muppets: What we learned from Caine, and Curry is that it works best if you either treat the Muppets as fellow actors, or yourself as a fellow Muppet.

Muppets in Oz mentioned??? Hello, my childhood???
Fun fact: Return to Oz (1964) was the very first animated tv special created by Rankin/Bass, who would release their first Animagic and Christmas special, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, later that year. Both of the specials share many of the same voice actors since Rankin/Bass worked with unionized VAs from Canada in their early days.
While I think Return to Oz is a pretty mediocre special, I absolutely love its colorful, 60’s-era animation style, and a lot of the songs, especially the ones sung by Dorothy, are really sweet and nostalgic.
I have only seen like 2 of these movies out of all the references 😅
lost in oz such niche and i hate that nobody talk enough about it
I agree! I love the show, I’m glad she included it in the video.
I bet the current tv industry could do an interesting spin on the Wizard of Oz books as an adventure saga a-la Stranger Things with a different vibe, you know? I'd like to see a full adaptation of the books at some point. I mean come on, it's been a century and there's so many adventures to adapt!

I'd love to see a ranking of all the wicked witch of the west's
In regards to the Muppets:
What we learned from Caine, and Curry is that it works best if you either treat the Muppets as fellow actors, or yourself as a fellow Muppet.
I wanna see you do different rankings of Daphne Blake with Scooby Doo
26:40 I remember this being a rerun during early mornings
21 minutes ago - I'm early! 😄 (and on a 47 minute video - I'm in the 'first batch' of viewers!)
