- How to Propagate African Violet From Single Leaf WITH UPDATE - 100% SUCCESS METHOD //GREEN PLANTS.
Method to propagate African violet plant
- Simply cut the healthy leaf with the leaf stem which should be trimmed to about half inch or one inch.
- And then insert the leaf stem into the growing medium, then
- water it thoroughly.
- Keep it in shady and bright light place and also keep the soil lightly moist and avoid getting the leaves wet, as they are susceptible to rot.
- Water the plants, use room temperature & fresh water.
- After 4 to 8 weeks we can see the new leaves and plants appear at the base of the leaf stem.
- Then we can re-pot the plants.
Soil mixture to re-pot the African violet plant
--Coco peat or Peat moss
--Sand
--Compost or composted cow manure(optional)

I've been growing African violets for years and I don't think it is so simple as this video implies. Most AV growers use a soil mix (often mix it themselves) and nothing was mentioned about that. It generally takes considerably longer than 45 days to get little leaves like this and about half of them die. I was amazed when this person pushed the soil down in the pot because African violets like light soil so it is easy for the roots to push through. And, it seemed like a lot of water for one watering to me because African violets don't like to sit in water - it's important that they have good drainage and any excess water under the plant is removed. BTW, where do you find coco peat? I'm going to try it to see if I get such good results.
Just goes to show everyone's path to success isn't always on the same road.
I am getting ready to propagate my Grandmother's (passed 10/19) African violets she left behind. She had them for over 50 years so I want to take the best care I can of them and the babies. In your experience what is the best soil mix to propagate AV in? Also how often should I be watering the new leaves to ensure healthy babies? Any other information you would like to share is welcomed.

Yeah...Me too. I guess you might get away with it if you only did it *once*...but that was so. much. water. to put on those leaves. Granted, coco peat is freaky light/fluffy and evaporates out the water fast...but...yikes.

Guys.... don't african violets grow in the rainforest? I leave mine on a shelf in the shower... Like that's where they live in my house.

I had the idea that African violet leaves take 2- 3 months to show signs of new sprout it's really amazing that within 45 days the leaves gave out new shoots. I usually use peat moss, vermiculite and perlite for potting mix of violets didn't know that cocopeat can be used

Personally, I let the soil stay dry for about as long as it stays wet. Can tell by handling the cup or pot by weight. For me that ends up being once a week, with good pot drainage. If the pot still feels heavy after a week, can skip. Depends on lighting as well. You will know for sure that you are under watering if your pot is light, and the donor leaf starts to droop.

Yes, it will be an exact clone of the mother.
Usually. There's a type of African violets called chimeras that may not be the same when grown from leaves.
I have tried to propagate African violets from cut leaves. I have very big healthy plants but they have never bloomed. I use Schulz African Violet Plus 8-14-9. But no flowers. Do you have any advice?
They usually need a lot of light to bloom. Have you tried grow lights? If you don’t have enough sunshine.
Keep them in a South facing window and they will continually bloom.
