15.2/R1.4.1 Predict the entropy change for a given reaction or process [HL IB Chemistry]

  • Remember that ENTROPY can also be thought of as DISORDER. Gas has the highest entropy in IB chemistry, so any reaction that produces gas will have a positive value of delta S, whereas any reaction that uses up gas will have a negative delta S. This is an oversimplification, e.g. what happens if both product and reactants are gaseous -- watch the vid!

    Glad you are finding them helpful. I understand that chemistry can be hard to "love" (shhh I prefer physics). Don't forget to practice past papers too - if you do the last 8 or so then the exam should hold no surprises. Get hold of the official IB answers too if you can. Good luck and mail me when you get your results!

    @drmariawaris Hi, P1 and P2 vids would get the IB on my case and they would shut down my site - they are very protective of their questions (they sell them you see!)
    I agree it would be useful AND I could make my own versions of the questions BUT the plug may get pulled on this project in a week or two by my school :(
    Glad you find the vids helpful

    CuS(s)+O2(g)--->Cu(s)+SO2(g).......how am i supposed to predict this? pretty sure professor doesnt want me to put that its 0. Maybe because SO2 has more bonds formed thus its more stable than O2 BUT CU lost a bond so its less stable than before...really dunno

      Hey. That is such an interesting question you have posed. So I luckily found the possible answer.
      personal.tcu.edu/thanna/10125/Quizzes/Exam312key.pdf
      In this PDF, at page 3 there is your concerned reaction and its entropy change also. From I what read, at standard conditions, your reaction will have a highly negative Delta Gibbs. Please read the PDF for more info.

    I’m a little confused, I was practicing along with you in the video and you wrote the entropy change for methanol as 240, but when I look at it in the data booklet it’s 127. I could be wrong but I think you confused the entropy and the enthalpy change of formation? Because that number is 240.

    • @ibchemvids
      @ibchemvids  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Methanol is not in this video. Either it is another vid (can you tell me which one) or another guy!

    and how to determine spontanoeus from there? pls help

  • @sds3841
    @sds3841 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    If u have an endothermic reaction (delta H is positive) like H2 + I2 --> 2HI can you say whether the entropy rises or decreases and whether the reaction could be spontaneous?

    • @ibchemvids
      @ibchemvids  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      entropy change (in IB) is determined by the creation/removal of gas products. If more gas is produced than reacted, then entropy increases and delta S is positive.
      If the reaction is ENDO and entropy is DECREASED then the reaction cannot happen.
      Use deltaG = deltaH-TDeltaS to determine these outcomes.

  • @ivannapacatan3233
    @ivannapacatan3233 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sir, what if both reactants and products have the same number of mol? Does entropy increase or decrease?

    • @ibchemvids
      @ibchemvids  ปีที่แล้ว

      If the moles of gas are the same on each side of the equation, then entropy change is about zero. Actual values for entropy are in the data booklet.

      You can calculate both by using products - reactants values. But entropy is not enthalpy.
