I used a Risograph in my indie printshop business in the early 90s! Desktop publishing (DTP) was quite a new thing at the time and we didn’t have much competition. We did our artwork using PageMaker, CorelDraw and PhotoShop and printed the results on a Risograph. Process printing required a minimum print run of 1,000 copies per print which is too much for small companies. Although we could only print spot colours with a Risograph (as opposed to process printing which used a base of four colours-CYMK-to produce full colour prints) we could print in small quantities, from 10 to 1,000 which is about the quantities usually required by small businesses.

I've never heard of this until recently. This must be popular in England bc I've never seen this style of printing in the United States. Saying it sits somewhere between photocopying and screenprinting was helpful! Can you Riso on things other than paper? I still don't understand why anyone would want to do this bc it seems to be more time consuming.

There’s more setup but once that’s done it prints really quickly so it’s faster overall for large quantities and you can also get specialty inks like fluorescents and metallics plus it just has a certain look that personally I really like

@@kgdrumz Do you think this style of printing is more popular outside of the U.S.? I've never seen it as an option on any printing menus when doing large printing orders.

From what I can tell, I think that's part of the aesthetic?

@@lizzyluv96you can always push them to the top (right) or bottom (left) to align them. But the 1mm off make a cool effect for sure. And it’s definitely part of the aesthetic.

I suppose the misregistration is what makes it perfect.

Can this machine print full colour image

    • @carolinepedler4068

It's just like screen-printing so yes, if the printer has a huge array of colours. the results will not be a photo realistic finish, but instead will have a more graphic result where colours can mismatch on top of each other. This is the charm of the riso. see here for a full colour example at Hato press pin.it/2o1xqKE
