Toby released this song pretty soon after 9/11 and it was during the time where the USA was so united after the attack. This song was blasted in every truck, honkytonk, country bar, military installation, etc. You couldn't go anywhere without hearing this song. And every time I hear it, my already big sense of patriotism swells immensely.

As someone who has had relatives serve in the Allied Forces as far back as The Great War, it hits a nerve and makes me even more thankful for our Defence Forces and the fight for the freedoms we take for granted, as well as take stock of the devastation that was 9/11 and how the world has reacted to and recovered from that.

The song was written in late 2001, and was inspired by Toby's father's death in March 2001, as well as the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States later that year. It was released in May 2002 as the lead single from the album, Unleashed. The song topped the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart and reached number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming his biggest solo hit on that chart. At first he wasn't going to release it as a single he was only going to perform it for the troops but the reaction was so strong that the Commandant of the Marine Corps James L. Jones told Toby it was his duty as an American citizen to record the song. "It's your job as an entertainer to lift the morale of the troops," Jones said to Toby. "If you want to serve, that is what you can do"

I was extremely lucky to come out of it all without any Serious injury. In my 20 years I helped conduct 71 funerals. I was a pallbearer I was a Rifleman the hardest was being the officer in charge . Presenting the flag to the next of kin is an extremely emotional experience. Every time I hear Taps played it brings tears to my eyes. The only other songs that bring tears to my eyes in such an emotional way are both Toby Keith songs. America and the song just trying to be a soldier.

.After learning his dog was dying, a 6 year old boy shared his philosophy about why dogs live shorter lives than humans:
“People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life - like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?”
      The Six-year-old continued,
“Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay for as long as we do.”

It may be late but welcome to the US! There is no country like it, even in the crime ridden areas. We are still the most secure nation on the planet and the one everyone wants to be a part of. Patriotism like oours does not exist anywhere else. My Dad was part of the Normandy invasion and part of the taking of Berlin. Without that generation we would all be speaking German. God bless all those who gave their lives for freedom.

I miss Toby. He grew up about a mile or so from me and my family. He graduated with my middle brother. He stayed here in the community so many were able to see him around town in his final days before he passed. He also owned a small music venue nearby where he was sometimes known to get up on stage with the guest artists and join for a song or two. RIP Toby.

So glad you've become a country fan. I think the country music artists feel the heart and soul of the American people. They can bring the patriots together like no others.
Another funny song by Toby is Trailerhood. I think you'd enjoy that one too.

Toby aka Big Dawg was a HUGE UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA FAN he was at all sporting events! During the 3rd and 4th quarter time out they play this song in honor of him. This is the Sooners newest tradition! We in Oklahoma love this man! He was a great Representative of the state and showed what we Okies are all about many of us who where born and raised here are very similar to him! ♥️💯

While showing respect for those who died, there’s a lot of veterans who came scarred mentally. Let’s not forget them.

I never thought about some of the euphemisms and phrases that are just part of the American 'ethos', I guess - "Uncle Sam", "Old Glory" "freedom ringing her bell (referencing the Liberty Bell). The things we grew up with from elementary school and forward, but that naturalized citizens might not get right away. Thanks for the great reaction. :)

I enlisted in the Army about 2 weeks after 9-11, i had just turned 17. We played this song on repeat for a long time. Army Ranger 2002-2012. Ive been to Hell and back, have seen alot of injustices and terrible things in other nations. I never appreciated my homeland until i returned from those places. America truly is the most free nation in the world. My colors fly outside my front door 24/7. Sorry to hear about your friend in Afghanistan. I also lost a few friend and brothers over there. HOOAH!

OMG red solo cup is hilarious.
I've had many family members that have served in the different military branches. Myself included. For my family it isn't a hesitation, not surprisingly considering we have John Hancock in our family tree. Our founders knew the danger for them and their loved ones but John Hancock was brave enough to sign the Declaration of Independence.
As Americans we fight willingly for our freedom, our families, our country. We proudly sacrifice everything for these things we hold dear.
Thank you Toby Keith for a wonderfully patriotic song! I pray for your speedy recovery! Good bless you and the U.S. of A. ❤️❤️
