I've been coming up with extreme character designs and I've discovered something beautiful: A Centaur with 18 levels in Monk and 2 levels in Rogue equipped with the Horseshoes of Speed and Ring of Water Walking that has taken the Mobile feat and that has been Hasted can travel 880 feet in one round. That's one and two-thirds of a mile of unrestrained travel for the duration of the spell at 100mph. It could literally run miles around a Gnome.
His loose rules is *DESTROYING* my OCD from a viewer standpoint, but then thinking of being in the game with them makes me think that this might be a more fun way to play to get kids and younger people into the game. If you don't know the rule from your head, just improv. Its so relaxed. Its neat to just view the game from that point of view

Ok this is a prefect ying to Matt's yang .. people talking about the Matt Mercer effect need to watch this and see how even a scattered dm can create a fun experience when the players assist and have fun with the mistakes ... please recommend to all new and or complaining players
I really dont get the Matt Mercer effect,.. But i get it that that is just his way of DM' ing bnut it nice nice to watch i think but i know i woulden do it like that,.. would take me to much time to make the Ground stones for it :) but hey all got there way of doing stuff that is the fun think about hu-Mans we ddont all do stuff the same way :)
After watching the first three hours of this, I decided to just start doing a DnDish game with my students and wing it. It went great. Thanks to many episodes of critical role, I was able to roll with the punches when the kids tried to do very stupid things and keep it fun.
Oooo, I really love how Sam is playing around with the timeline of the game by making it so that everything that happens is actually being recounted during an interrogation.

Sam Regal is not a technically profiecient DM but he's got such flair and is just so gosh darn likeable that this session was just a pleasure to watch. Also, any time Ashly Burch is involved, I'm in. Big fan of HAWP.
That'll come with experience I think, the more he DM's the better he'll get, he certainly does have charm and personality in spades though so its hard to fault him... fun just follows him.
So many things to talk about for this episode! a) I, like everyone else, adored Jayne and want her to come back! b) That harmonized Amazing Grace was the best omg. c) Mary Elizabeth Mc-freaking-Glynn gettin a THIRD hdywtdt! Daaaang! d) Can we all give Sam Reigel a giant hug and a round of applause? I can relate to first-time DM panic SO MUCH but he did great! (Tip for anyone who wants to start DMing: If there's a fight you know is going to happen, roll all of the enemie's initiatives in advance so you just have to add in the players'. Also binders and separators are your friends! Keep a character/monster sheet tab, an items tab, an NPC descriptions tab and just a random sheet of names you can use on the fly. Organize each alphabetically. You can thank me later)

Liam is so entranced and proud! Sam was actually a really good DM, and everyone else was so good at slipping into their roles. This was definitely my favorite one-shot to watch!
Liam is one of the best reasons for going through all the One-shots because he fully embodies his different characters so well. Such a brilliant actor.
I'm amazed by the fact that no matter how Sam made way to give them more chances on actually killing each other, the rolls still allowed the flash forwards to remain organic.
Wow, this was an interesting episode. For having never DM'd before Sam did a very good job in keeping the story and combat flowing smoothly. It was really interesting to see a more chaotic party dynamic, rather than the typical band of true companions. I'd really like to see Sam take the DM's chair again some time in the future and continue this... it has a lot of promise!
"Pants!!! Pants!!! Pants!!!" :) Sam did really well, good story atmosphere, handling all those different moving bits.... Well done! I also like that the previous non-gms are getting a bit of experience so they can realize even more, how awesomely smooth Matt is. That is 20 years experience for you Baby!!!

Props to Sam for DMing his first game live on the internet... Every man's first DM experience is a confusing train wreck, and you made it through while keeping the energy and fun going! I for one would not want my first DM session recorded for all to see, I'll tell you that.
mattmark94 I mean if you just want to play it completely straight and boring. Every party needs at least one unstable and/or chaotic character to make sure things stay mixed up
@@stickginge yeah I agree. It can be so fun to play an evil character, but can be really problematic for a long term campaign. Silly oneshot like this is perfect opportunity to pull one out
A PERFECT example of how fun and a good group dynamic is the most important part of ANY pen-and-paper RPG. Sam's not steeped in rules knowledge, but he is absolutely brimming with excitement and passion, and players feed off that. Bravo.
I love how every time Sam comments about a character moving 30ft, he's astounded by how fast they are. Buddy, if you played character's who were taller than 3'2" you might have more than 25ft of movement XD
Wouldn't be surprised if Jane appears in campaign 2. Maybe Jane could play the part of a villain who faces off against the Mighty Neign. I haven't seen campaign 2 yet, but I think Jane could very well attempt to free Tharzidun while the Mighty Neign are preoccupied.
So, story time, I recently bought the Tal'Dorei campaign guide. Long story short, Jayne is gonna be the main villain as the Death Cleric of the Chained Oblivion. It's gonna be fun. :)

The only reason he still had a lvl 9 slot is because he wanted to cast wish to save Liam. It wasn't a strategic counterspell. Why do you think he was crying and apologizing after doing it?
@@gnralZTT They're talking about the counterspell that stopped Vecna from banishing Pike and Grog, not the level 9 counterspell. They said "to the nine hells", not "level nine counterspell".

Sam got a classic DM experience. Clearly he planned to have them all come together and get passed their differences at the end. But I the players didn’t get the memo and tried to kill each other literally seconds before and during his wrap up speech.
They may have mangled the rules to hell and back, but the storytelling in this one-shot is top notch! Love how Sam interweaved all the characters' backstories together
this turned out to be an amazing story and for dming with zero experience Sam did pretty good. also that flash forward was interesting and shows that Liam's character escapes questioning at the end xD

This is 100% my favourite CR one-shot. Sam’s DM style is so fucking great. Eric Bauza is very great. He’s awesome. They’re both awesome. EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS IS AWESOME.

Grats Sam! Awesome job. I agree with what Liam said about Sam doing well with no qualifier. Not just good for a first timer, but good period. Ya, couple details missed but even an experienced DM will have that happen occasionally. I liked his storytelling, as well. I hope he does another in the future. Is it Thursday yet?
As a DM of the same group for roughly two years, and also having done plenty of one shots, I find that when DMing one shots, it's good to drive the story a little more, perhaps not create such an open world for the party to spend loads of time exploring. At the end of the day, you want your party to make it through to the end of the one shot. It's hard to do this tastefully and seamlessly, with little dispute, but I think Sam did a fantastic job. I hope we see him in the drivers seat more often!
That she hit consecutive natural 20s to land two clothesline attacks on her character made me wonder if Dren (her previous one-shot character in "The Return of Liam!") was blessing Ashly's d20 then. "Get him, girl!"
I love the voice Eric, I think it was, chose for Frankfurt. He's awesome, especially for playing for the first time! He should show up on this show again :)

forcing your players to lower their ACs or take a point of exhaustion in the middle of a fight was kinda genius
AC and exhaustion changes during encounters should really be a thing in DnD. Still being fully useful at 1 HP sounds like a bad joke.
If that's kinda genius, than Sam is a motha fukin priest of Iun. He didn't just give them DA or exhaustion, he let them rp out of either bad option ie:
Donald ducking it
Ripping of their sleeves
Or revealing a badass outfit from under a cloak
Sam might not think it but he was above average in terms of new DMs

Sam was actually a really good DM, and everyone else was so good at slipping into their roles. This was definitely my favorite one-shot to watch!
I love how into his character Liam got. Just so gloriously, unashamedly evil!
Liam is one of the best reasons for going through all the One-shots because he fully embodies his different characters so well. Such a brilliant actor.
I'm amazed by the fact that no matter how Sam made way to give them more chances on actually killing each other, the rolls still allowed the flash forwards to remain organic.
Wow, this was an interesting episode. For having never DM'd before Sam did a very good job in keeping the story and combat flowing smoothly. It was really interesting to see a more chaotic party dynamic, rather than the typical band of true companions. I'd really like to see Sam take the DM's chair again some time in the future and continue this... it has a lot of promise!
That's the beauty of one-offs, you can kinda get crazy because who cares if your party actually likes each other?

A PERFECT example of how fun and a good group dynamic is the most important part of ANY pen-and-paper RPG.
Sam's not steeped in rules knowledge, but he is absolutely brimming with excitement and passion, and players feed off that.

I love how every time Sam comments about a character moving 30ft, he's astounded by how fast they are. Buddy, if you played character's who were taller than 3'2" you might have more than 25ft of movement XD

I do think making a 30+ character brawl as this one-shot was pretty hard for a first-time DM, but he did so very well.
The only reason he still had a lvl 9 slot is because he wanted to cast wish to save Liam. It wasn't a strategic counterspell. Why do you think he was crying and apologizing after doing it?

Mollymauk was revived but renamed himself Kingsley and became a pirate.

Sam got a classic DM experience. Clearly he planned to have them all come together and get passed their differences at the end. But I the players didn’t get the memo and tried to kill each other literally seconds before and during his wrap up speech.
This is only the 2nd one-shot of Sam's that I've seen, but I greatly appreciate that he actually has the players solve real/physical puzzles.
Sam as the DM? It's like some kind of wonderful dream that we can all share.

Grats Sam! Awesome job. I agree with what Liam said about Sam doing well with no qualifier. Not just good for a first timer, but good period. Ya, couple details missed but even an experienced DM will have that happen occasionally. I liked his storytelling, as well. I hope he does another in the future. Is it Thursday yet?

As a DM of the same group for roughly two years, and also having done plenty of one shots, I find that when DMing one shots, it's good to drive the story a little more, perhaps not create such an open world for the party to spend loads of time exploring. At the end of the day, you want your party to make it through to the end of the one shot. It's hard to do this tastefully and seamlessly, with little dispute, but I think Sam did a fantastic job. I hope we see him in the drivers seat more often!
