Jacob has to play and deconstruct a meticulous character dealing with grief, racism and identity while Sam is spending all his time and charisma being a bratty and horny drama Queen. Both are perfect. I love their portrayals so much.
I completely agree with you. In the older version Lestat used to be the interesting one, while Louis was the straight guy (no pun intended). But so far in this version Louis is the more complicated, more nuanced one. I love how, in this interpretation, Louis is no longer the everyman main character, the most sensible of them all who ends up being a bit boring and even annoying at times. This Louis is complex af. He's a worldly, capable person with roaring fire in him that has been repeatedly put out by the racist, homophobic society he lives in and all the expectations that weigh him down. And he still has to act all grateful because for a black gay man he is privileged. It makes so much more sense that a person who would be otherwise perfectly self-sufficient emotionally and confident, only feels seen for the first time when Lestat gives him the attention he deserves. And then when your "straight man" is this complex, you have to up your antihero's game. I love how they don't even try to pretend that Lestat is not absolutely deranged, he just goes all out.

Even Jacob Anderson, who is British, demonstrates flawless mastery of the African American Louisiana accents to a degree that astonishes Americans when we find his country of origin. Yes, they perfectly adapted him for TV to be a character that you genuinely like independent of his romance. Granted he still a messy sad boi just like Louis in the book but it’s easier to connect with him.
