India ink is a fantastic way of dying oak black! The ink actually soaks in & reacts with the wood to make that amazing color but still show the grain (rather than a dye sitting on top of the wood like regular stain.) The chemical process is called ebonizing. It works best on open grain woods high in tannins like ash, cherry, and of course oak.

Thanks for the info! I agree it looks amazing, and is one of my absolute favorites 😍
Edit: I just checked out your channel, and I am a drummer too!

@@JThorumWoodworks You're welcome! Always happy to share. I have one small correction though: ash wood actually has, like, NO tannins, so it's not a true case of ebonization. But its open grain allows you to cheat a little bit and still get an all-black look. Awesome tutorial video I found- th-cam.com/video/NhCcBc6kndk/w-d-xo.html Haven't tried it yet but it looks amazing!

Turned out great! Love the "black oak"! What was the india ink you were using?

Thanks! I can’t remember what the brand is if that’s what you’re asking, because the bottle is all messy now 😂 but India ink is just black ink that you can pick up at any arts and crafts store. It’s intended purpose isn’t to stain wood, but I like what it does.

Why not just flip the board and run it through your table again?

Yea I probably could’ve, but I felt it was the safer thing to do since I was not working with the squarest rough lumber

@@JThorumWoodworks you had a better look at the wood than I did in the video. It came out great in any case.
