- September 2024 I finally got the drone up to view the viaduct from a different perspective. Previous attempts over the last couple of years were thwarted by the weather and the popularity of the location.
The footpath across the viaduct is now open, having been cordoned off for many years.
When I first visited nearly 50 years ago the forest was much as it is now and you cannot see the viaduct from the main road at "Gatehouse Station". In the intervening years the trees were felled by the Forestry Commission and subsequently replanted, so for some time there was a spectacular view across the heath and heather to the viaduct. Now the trees have all grown up again. I don't expect it will be too long before the cycle repeats and the view is once again open.
What a scenic journey it must have been along this line from Castle Douglas to Port Patrick in the heyday of steam. Dr Beeching had a lot to answer for!
See my other video "Big Water of Fleet Viaduct" for more views of the surrounding area.
