    With the Remarkable taking a turn towards becoming a digital typewriter and Boox's update 3.3.2 that introduced typing notes as well (surprise, surprise), it seemed interesting to me to check how the Supernote A5X performs when used as a digital typewriter.

    After watching this video, I tried tested it out myself. Maybe my expectations of an e ink device are too low but it worked exactly as I’d hoped it would. I typed and the works showed up on the screen. This isn’t the device I would use for heavy editing, but for first draft work, I think this would meet all my basic expectations. Then export to a computer and edit and rewrite as necessary

      Yes, those are what would be considered MVP expectations, meaning Minimum Viable Product expectations. Objective expectations are normally based on the state of the competitors who fall in the similar category and can perform a similar function, and this is where Supernote lags behind, when it's typing performance and precision is compared to the competitor E-Ink devices, such as the Remarkable or Boox' devices.

    Voya. Now that the A6X2 is out. Have they addressed any of these issues? Mind you, it's only been 7 months, heh. And these issues abound.

    Thank you Voja, for this in-depth look at using a Keyboard with the Supernote!
    It was definitely something I was wondering recently, since I started looking at purchasing an e-Ink device with keyboard support.

    That's so much, this is really useful mini series as I think many people are interested in the digital typewriter usecase! 🙂

    All of this sounds like software issues, which is good. Now that The Supernote competitors are embracing keyboards, i figure the neglect in this area will eventually be addressed. It needs to be addressed or just removed. Halfassed functionality is just painful.
    Thank you for all you do. You need to be a product manager for Ratta. :) Or, at least, if I were the Product Manager for the Supernote team, I would have you in speeddial. (I was a product manager in a past life and we really embraced folks like you.)

    Thanks for the video. I actually couldn’t finish it because I felt so bad for Ratta in this area. So…it seems like a totally ignored functionality. Honestly, I don’t know why Bluetooth was ever included. The speed and nature of the Supernote is such that typing should never be encouraged. The Word doc functionality is really an albatross as well. I use the SuperNote A5X as my daily. I went all in and gave my Boox Note Air to a student in need. I plan to migrate to an Boox Ultra C and know that while I will focus on the handwriting, the keyboard capability seems more fully developed. Finally, Supernote has no real focus on performance and speed-including refresh and loading times. I split my journal down because load times are irritating. But you can’t search across documents, so thats what pushes me to have larger files etc. I fear that some choices that Supernote is making, while noble and interesting, will actually sink the product and the company. And that makes me sad.

    • @ascheweiss7016
      @ascheweiss7016 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, everyday I dream of a product with both Boox's stroke pattern, robust reader and Supernote's soft front panel and Notebook function. If I'm was a billionaire, I would surely buy both companies and ask them to merge together and design a color e-ink super fast soft membrane notepad.

      I just returned my Note Air 3C (and ate $100 in the process). The writing experience was poor (I'm a writer, not just a note taker) and the weight in hand was ridiculous. The battery wasn't great, but it was ... whatever. I'm going to give the A5X2 a go when it comes out, even with the warts demo'ed in this video. We'll see. I feel like the optimal e-device is still five years, or so, out.

    I agree supernote doc documents are very buggy. Also you can do a whole document it will take about 20 pages and no more then the document acts up big time. Also you can't put it to sleep and get back to the spot you were on before. I have been using remarkable folio and its so much better especially when you put it to sleep and it goes to where you were. No searching for the correct spot.

    I'v tried Supernote as typewriter for many times, but unfortunately, the word processing system is still buggy. So I'd rather use word processor to modify my articles. But hopefully the Supernote team can upgrade it to some kind of markdown writer! (Hopefully)😊

    • @t0dd000
      @t0dd000 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. Text editing at as minimum would be nice. But ... I still see that as a nicety. Heck, even if it can't do markdown. Just the basics would be a nice option.

      I would definitely love traditional word editor tools and markdown functions. I have been researching the Supernote for days and I would have bought it already if it had these features. Actually, I would buy it if I could see these items scheduled in the roadmap. After all, this is a writing tool / platform. The Supernote would be supercharged with this .

    Thank you so much for all your content. You've been super helpful, as I am new to the e-ink tablet world! I am looking for a device to 1. take notes via pen feature 2. Type out Word docs 3. Read. Which device would be best for me then as you've highlighted the supernote A5x lackings when it comes to its typewriter function? Would the Ultra Tab C or X be best? I've heard back things about remarkable but your other videos seem to rate it glowingly. Any help would be much appreacited!

    Voya, thanks as always for this review. It was my understanding that this was supposed to be more of an editing function on existing Word files and not a fully functional word processor. They have specific shortcuts for editing and adding in text like you might in proofreading. Does that change your thoughts on them only half way developing the feature? Just curious because it does make the proofreading experience more portable.

    I wouldn’t use an e-ink device for typing. They were not originally designed for that. I appreciate my Supernote A5x for long-hand writing, and, as an e-ink device, longer battery life. Using a Bluetooth keyboard will only end up with a faster battery drain.
    When I type, I want to be able to do it quickly, and this is better done on a laptop, non-e-ink tablet, or even a phone (notes app).

      Another way to look at it is one less accessory to purchase. I'm waiting for mine to be delivered soon. One of the reasons I choose SN was its focus on doing a few things really good VS trying to be a tablet replacement device. Plus it seems newer models coming from SN aren't going to be faster or much different. So I'm looking forward to get started using E ink for mostly note-taking, pdfs n Kindle.

    I do not own a Supernote but do have the Remarkable with Type Folio. It is beautifully designed and seems well made. But, as you have previously pointed out, what is the purpose here? As word processors, these devices are so far rather primitive tools. I would much rather use an iPad or laptop with the muscular word processor programs for that purpose. The main real advantage of the E-Ink note takers is the battery life (no small matter) and the ability to move back and forth between typing and their original purpose of handwritten note taking. I think Remarkable may find its way to building on the concept and they seem willing to update their software often. I would suggest to them to open up their device to play nice with other apps and word processors once a document moves back to IOS or Android, etc, meaning start typing on the device and then pass off the document in the proper format for polishing in the user’s program of choice, sort of like the FreeWrite concept.

    • @t0dd000
      @t0dd000 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The purpose would be basic text editing. I think there is a lot of value there. Anything beyond that I personally think is unnecessary.

    It sounds like this function is more like an actual typewriter than a full function word processor. I have used a Bluetooth keyboard with my iPad running Apple Pages, and the experience is little different from running Pages on a MacBook.

    How these tablets are able to create detailed drawings, but can’t simply typing?
    Imagine how many programmers and writers would buy an eink screen that works seamless?
    I really hope they work hard on that. For now, this technology is just not enough to become a thing.

      @@t0dd000 I mean a thing as a text editor. BTW, I wonder if there is that much professional artists doing their work on tablets. I have real paper and pens, works far better with far lower costs lol

      I haven’t written anything of substance, but as a basic text editor or typewriter (think Freewriter) this definitely works. I wouldn’t try to edit a whole book on this thing, but if I’m just free flowing and writing, I think it works pretty well
