Let's be fair here. They were facing possibly the most clutch qb and one of the greatest coaches ever. They have a top 2 defense to boot. He knew it would take more than limiting possessions against Mahomes. It's a legitimate fear.
Definitely should've gone second. 4 vs 3 downs is massive isn't it? You literally get 25% more plays if you go second.

That's like saying you're not allowed to go for it on 4th down if you receive the ball first. We'll never know if KC would've gone for it on 4th and 1 deep in their own territory if they got the ball first, but let's not act like they were automatically going to punt, either.

The 49ers D# needed a breather after the long last drive. So starting with the ball gave them that. They just didn’t get the stop early in the drive.
The main problem was Kyle taking the field goal instead of going for it on fourth down. He should know Mahomes would score a TD pretty easily; the chiefs would’ve won in regulation if they had a couple more seconds on the clock.

The idea that all these smart analytics etc folks but especially an NFL head coach didn't fully grasp the "new" (college) overtime rules is ridiculous. Like Ryan said, in the college game, you near ALWAYS defer because from a competition standpoint its a known quantity vs an unknown one. Shanahan has major issues with late game pressure decision making period. There's no way Andy Reid doesn't defer because he and his team prepared for seemingly ever scenario that can be controlled. The decision was a mistake and the last one that cost them. Seriously. You don't give the team the overtime rules were changed because of, the advantage.
They are assuming that a niners td and a Chiefs td would give the Niners a third possession. What if KC had a play they loved from the two and went for the 2 point conversion and made it. Game over.
Mahomes said in an interview they would have deferred the kick in OT but he also said they would have went for 2 PTs if they had scored.
The problem was that the chiefs was playing better than the 49ers in the second half since Kyle isn’t great at making adjustments. If the 49ers score 8 points on their first drive it didn’t matter what Mahomes did; 49ers can win it on the 3rd drive. Kyle not going for it on fourth down is crazy.

@@mikesaetern8263 no that's what changed starting this year. Both teams get the ball no matter if the 1st team scores a touchdown or not. This was changed due to the chiefs beating the Bills with a walk off touchdown. Pretty funny.

There are enough reasons to take the ball at the start of the overtime despite both teams are guaranteed to get the ball once.
What are those reasons? Because getting the ball second seems to make more sense
@@mallurypollard7815 I don't think there are any correct decisions when it comes to the new rules; both sides have have their advantages and disadvantages. If you elect to receive the ball first and get a td then the opposing team gets a td, you have a chance to end it with the next drive which i believe to be a major advantage. However, on the other end as the cast discussed if you get the ball second, you know what you need to do whether its getting a field goal or td. Just not enough data yet to know what the best decision would be
SF played not to lose in OT. KC played to win. Even if SF had scored a TD, KC was going to win or lose on the back of Mahomes. SF was never getting the ball “3rd”.

Think about what was just said. San Francisco failed to get a touchdown in OT. So the decision to take the ball had nothing to do with it.
It wouldn't have mattered. The 49ers were doomed as soon as it went to OT. They rely heavily on their edge rushers, and those guys had been going 1000mph all game. It was only a matter of time until they were gassed, so going into OT made it even worse.
It would have mattered if Kyle actually went for it on fourth down and scored 8 points. Then the 49ers could’ve won it without Mahomes even touching the ball on the 3rd OT drive.

Depends on what aspects you compare.
Mahomes is my guy. But don't diminish Josh Allen. He's a great QB. Mahomes should be known for beating other greats not chumps.
Josh Allen is a monster. A refined him could dominate the rest of the NFL and almost beat mahomes.
I think it comes down to what side of the ball you trust. To that point, the defense of SF was playing amazing. I would have trusted the defense to hold KC to 3 in that scenerio.
Shanahan made a bad decision. He should've defered and put the defense back out there. You have the boogeyman across the field and you gave him 4 downs. It only matters if the 49ers scored at TD. Shanahan has 4th and 4 inside the 10. Go for it....... After the field goal,the analytics meant nothing to #15.

If Andy don't retire, I think he can win 6-9. Seems impossible but Andy is a great coach, Steve a beast as the DC, and Mahomrs is a monster! Think about Brady I'd, he had a 10 year drought. We can all sit here and would say, we don't think Mahomes gonna go on a 10 year drought. So let's say he gets 3 in those 10 years. Thats already 6 at 38yrs old. We don't know how long he'll play so it's a tough call but I think he can get to 8

I like the call to go for it in OT. Our defense was gassed. Had we scored a TD and ate some clock we give our defense a legit chance to stop them. Plus we get the ball back in sudden death. Maybe if the Refs actully made a holding call on the cheifs we'd have a better chance.
I'm 💯agree with Ryan here. You want to defer. You want to know what you have to do when you get possession. And going 2nd essentially let's you have 4 downs and that affects your play calling. Shanny has forgotten more football than 90% of the people who have been involved in the NFL, but I think he was wrong here.

One thing people are missing is that, once the Niners get the field goal, the Chiefs, once they get into field goal range are more likely to kick the field goal on 4th down to tie and keep the game going. At that point Niners would have had an advantage.
You really think the chiefs would “settle” for a field goal and let the 49ers win it by a TD without Mahomes touching the ball again 😂. Andy Reid would be smarter than that, unlike Kyle who refuses to go for it on fourth down even though he knew they were not stopping Mahomes.

They say they want to know what they have to do, so take the ball second. They're also saying when SF kicked the FG, they "knew" the game was over. So if you "know" you need a TD to win the game because Mahomes is going to match with one of his own, then you "know" not to kick the FG and go for the TD!
You shouldn't confuse ease of decision-making with ease of execution. Just because I know I need a TD to tie the game doesn't make it easier to score the TD.

I don't get why people keep saying it's the same as college. In college, if it's tied after the first OT, both teams get the ball in the second OT. In this case, after one possession each, it's sudden death. That's an enormous difference.
that's why I say the 1st possession is the same as college since both teams get the ball no matter what, not the entire OT, with the only difference being that they still play the whole field

It's when some people (like a particular expert in this video) says that it's the same and thus the college strategy of going second is obviously correct that I actually take the time to write a comment on TH-cam, because otherwise my friends would have to hear me vent about how someone is getting paid for this and they don't deserve that.

They have the 15 min clock bc they get a 2 min break in between if it runs out...and another halftime after the second 15 min quarter.
It's legit just a new game. Each gets one possession. If they match points, it becomes sudden death. Pretty simple.
Basically it comes down to the 49ers didn't make the plays when they needed it most in OT. Had they would have scored a TD first then even if KC scored a TD the 49ers only need a FG to win the game. Poor decision of play calls fall on Shanahan. He will have to now live with that. Oh well..... there is always next year!!
I'm not sure of the new OT rules, but it seems to me if you choose to receive the ball first, you have to score a touchdown. Otherwise you give the other team an opportunity to win the game, which is excactly what happened! Again not sure of the rules, but it seems the Chiefs took a big risk going for a TD from 4th down, because if they didn't get it they lose the game.

You kick the ball. The team that goes second has a huge advantage. There is a reason they don't use this rule during the regular season.
Even if your defense is gassed and Maholmes leads that same TD drive, you can still answer and then go for 2 to win it.
Well if let's say we get the ball second. Mahomes scores and we match. They get the ball first in sudden death. And IDK about you but giving maholmes that chance in sudden death is not something I'd risk. We fail to score a TD in OT. End of story.

What i heard the ref say was "4th quarter timing rules apply". Someone's gonna have to look up to see if it would go to double ot since the Chiefs were still on their first drive. If its 4th quarter rules then once its 0:00 the team with the most points should win and it counts as a defensive stop
I think the commentators said it was the first quarter of OT and that’s why they weren’t calling a timeout

1) Kyle goes for it on fourth down and scores 8 points.
2) Mahomes matches with 8 points.
3) 49ers win it without Mahomes even touching the ball.

Do people not understand basic numbers? If they match each other on their guaranteed possessions with td/td or fg/fg or punt/punt the niners then get the ball first with sudden death, it's a no brainer to take the ball first every time, even more so with a tired defense.

It’s mind numbing that four people who make a very good living talking about football failed to grasp the concept that not every ot game in the playoffs will be played indoors. An ot game in Buffalo with 30 mph gusts means the end of the quarter and change of direction will be significant.

Blab, blah, blah. The eventual ending was written on stone tablets 10,000 yrs ago by the Gods. You could see it on the faces of the 49ers when Mahomes got the ball for that last drive. Bottom line you have to play at an almost superhuman level to even have a chance of beating Mahomes and Reid in the SB. I'm not sure which brought me more joy the Chiefs holding the trophy or the 49ers needing psychological help on the sidelines afterwards.
