  • My Porsche 928 is back from the shop for its HUGE mechanical update and refresh and I am DYING to start using it! I am breathing fresh oxygen into this old car and giving it a chance at another 38 years of life.
    You’ll remember in the video before last, I showed you all the parts that 928SRUS sent me (our series sponsor) and now it’s Matt’s change to tell us what he found when he stripped it back, all the surprises and all the challenges to fit the new parts. Have I now got a car I can rely on? How far away from that hallowed situation are we? Surely, please, no more expenditure?!
    I suspect that we may be following bad rubber hoses all around this car for a while but I hope we’ve crested the peak. Let me show you what we did!
    PorKen tensioner details here! 928srus.com/search?options%5B...
    Thank you very much to my sponsor 928SRUS! Really great people selling EVERYTHING you need for your 928!

    All written, researched and edited by me. You can download all my Porsche model guides at www.jayreadyoutube.com so go and take a look there, OK?
    Why not follow me on Instagram too? I am a CAR guy first and I get around so take a look at the reels and pictures that I take because you might like them! Also you get news on my own Porsche, my MG and other life events there before TH-cam! Look for jayreadyoutube on Insta now!

    I think the problem with a lot of German cars is they can go 10-20 years without very little maintenance but that bill is only being deferred to the next owner.

    • @JAYREAD
      @JAYREAD  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In this case, I’m afraid, I AM the next owner! Lol!

      As a Porsche owner I can concur - some models can get relatively cheap second hand but you are going to pay Porsche prices to maintain no way around that.
      Best solution is regular maintaining little and often that way you avoid the big surprises but eventually you are going to fork out for some large maintenance repairs

      @andydhillon1977 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Assuming you meant "with little maintenance" good point. However, that's with pretty much the case for any car.
      When most cars get to this point, the car is disposed of. It's the few cars worth saving that get restored.
      Often times, it's bedt practice to strip the car down completely, inspect everything, replace everything needed. It's just that most people aren't willing to put the time and money to do it, and that's perfectly understandable.

      Same with most tough reliable vehicles. My 80series Land Cruiser and Subaru Legacy were both ran into the ground when I got them. They were rough through neglect/abuse but would have kept going for years with the wrong owners. I've seen Toyotas in 3rd world countries that are decades behind on basic service that'll go forever.

      And I didn't defer the work on my car (not a Porsche) and after 10 years and over 100K miles, some very expensive work need to be. Unless it's a Lexus, most cars will need a lot of work after that amount of time and mileage. Thankfully, my interior is holding up great.The electro-mechanicals...hmmm...not so much...

    I've just bought an eighty eight 928S4, 54500 genuine and documented miles. Mileage wise, it didn't need the cambelt tensioners and water pump done, but it was last changed in 2006! Straight to the specialist in Norwich to get changed for piece of mind. New bonnet struts next month. But I am gobsmacked as to all the attention it gets.

    I own a 1986 Porsche 928 32valve 5dpeed same exterior/interior like yours
    I had an automatic which was slower and heavier and sold it because even though the automatics are easier to drive, the manuals are worth more. I replaced the rims with 911 turbo twist rims.

    Actually the 16V motors are not interference engines,so a broken belt is not a terrible issue. The later 32v motors are all interference engines so the belt is a big issue.

    • @Stratos666
      @Stratos666 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, the 928 S with the 4.7 L engine from 1980 is already an interfering engine, only the 4.5 "Ur-Modell" not...

    I'm considering a 1989 928 S4 purchase... I'd be picking it up for a great price... my question being... How much would 20-25k in mechanical restoration get me... rebuild on engine and tranny... just have no idea how much of all the mechanical work restoration would get me with 20-25k thrown at it?

    • @JAYREAD
      @JAYREAD  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JAYREAD I did this to my IROC-Z28. It was only available with auto with the EFI engine. Thankfully, I got a great deal on the BW T-5 5 Spd. It was WELL worth it! 3:17 to 3:26 - are you guys serious ????? this fresh coolant will wash out rest of the debris from the heater core and will clog/compromise new radiator and cooling system all together , and in the end still will be needed to be replaced. do it right while you are there

    • @Br1anuk
      @Br1anuk ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From what he's saying it looks like its going to take a while to get all the crap out. If it was me I'd just keep dropping the bottom hose and refill with cheap coolant until it settles down. A good run with its new water pump should get it all moving through.
