When my son was born, I listened to this song every night while I gave him his bottle after his bath and before bed (after the bassinet by the bed phase).
This father and son conversation sounds just like my father and me, back in the day. My pops is 97 now and thankfully he is still with us, hopefully he will be with us awhile longer. He had more wisdom than I gave him credit for back then.
Good luck to you both, I lost my dad 2 years ago and its a great loss that we all have to face unfortunately. Make sure you say and talk about everything you need to, one day it will be too late unfortunately.
@@SirManfly he was 90 so I really can't complain I guess but it's always difficult no matter how much time you have and spend together.. Things come up that you think, ah I'll ask dad but..
There's an old quote by Mark Twain... "When I was 18, I thought my father was the stupidest man on the planet. By the time I turned 21, it amazed me how much that old man had learned in 3 years."
You should hear his 50 year anniversary remake of this song. He sings the father parts in his now 70 + voice, but used the original tapes of himself in his 20s for the son parts. Incredible.
I was in my 20s in the early 1970s. I recall that when friends got together, someone would pick up a guitar and play & sing something by Cat Stevens. He was hugely popular.
My mother has always said she wanted this song played at her funeral. This is one of cat Stevens best. Dig into some cat Stevens. He was my favorite artist in the '70s.
"Moon Shadow", "Another Saturday Night"(and I Ain't Got Nobody), "Peace Train", "Morning Has Broken", and "Wild World" are a few more great ones by Cat Stevens. ❤ you guys !! Another great reaction! Thanks for bringing people together through music 🎶
Ohhh. Cat Stevens, wow! He’s amazing. He is a folk singer, a poet that puts beauty to music. His vocals are gritty and sweet all at the same time. I’ve heard his songs at folk festivals, at country events and 60s reminiscing concerts. And I went to catholic school and back in the 60s we had folk masses. We sang Morning Has Broken in church to single acoustic guitar. He conjures many emotions and memories to a different time. Very 60s. VERY!
Yeah that gritty voice. I knew the song was old, and before I saw his picture I thought he was too when he did this song. But he was young, probably in his 20s or early 30s. The irony is that he's old now, and sound exactly the same.
If I had to pick 10 best written songs that I have heard in my lifetime, this song would be in the top 3! Cat Stevens is an excellent songwriter, singer and is a legend and this song will be played for many generations
The magic of Cat Stevens. Grew up with his music and got to see him in Memphis TN back in 1976. His live voice sounds just like his recorded voice.... AN UNBELIEVABLE SOUND! Anything from his Tea for the Tillerman or his Catch Bull at Four records will do. Great reaction, TY. My favorite song by this artist has always been Where do the Children Play.
It's amazing that by changing his tone in the song, you can tell when the father is speaking and when the son is without him telling you..... beautiful.....can't listen to this without goosebumps
Have always love Cat Steven's music. He is a great singer songwriter with a very unique sounding voice. One of my first albums I ever bought was his "Tea For The Tillerman". The whole album is great. So is the album "Teaser & The Firecat". His first big hits were "Matthew & Son", "I Love My Dog" & "The First Cut Is The Deepest" in 1967. He has had so many great songs in his career such as "Father & Son", "Wild World", "Moonshadow", "Peace Train", "Morning Has Broken" etc. He is still recording & performing live & his voice still sounds great.
@@Rhiannon011 I loved all the more well known song's of Cat Stevens just like a lot of other people. Played them over and over and would even skip over the lesser known songs on records to hear the greats. Then (probably from a little burnout) I started listening more to the lesser knowns and "Where do the Children Play" has now been one of my favorites for a long time.
I was 16 when this song came out in 1970 and I learned it from a Cat Stevens song book and sang and played it on my guitar all the time, totally feeling the Son's part about having to rebel, break away, find myself. Last year, my 22-year old son heard the song somewhere and texted me to ask If I "had ever heard of it." I found that old songbook from 50 years ago and it fell open to Father and Son from my having played it so often back then. I texted him back, "Yeah, I have." I started singing it again, and of course, now I relate to the Father wanting to pass on his wisdom to the Son who is out in the world finding himself. And yeah, I'm choking up a bit as I tell this.
Cat Stevens has truly kept me from dying from a broken heart. I adore this man. He goes by his Muslim name, Yusuf Islam, now. He will always be the sublimely fabulous Cat Stevens to many of us. I adore this man and his music. Please read his story...he left music when he was at the top of his game in order to follow his new faith, Islam. It took years for him to understand how important his music was, and is.
Good reaction, team. The line "From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen" is pivotal to this song. As a parent you need to keep your kid safe and well and teach him/her. But you must allow your offspring to grow and blossom. Getting that balance is impossible. As a child you have to listen and realise that your parents are not deliberately stifling you and are attempting to provide the best environment for you to grow. Understanding that is nigh on impossible. So reconciliation tends to happen after the kids have flown the nest, usually when they have kids of their own. But sometimes the reconciliation never happens. You may gather that this song brings me to reflect on my own life.
I love how the conversation is told from both sides and how you can just tell who is speaking the father or the son from the tone of Cat’s voice! Great reaction guys 😎
My father is fighting Alzheimer's disease, and no longer remembers who I am. Even though he's still alive, I've lost him. This song kills me every time I hear it. Every single time.
Someone commented that hearing this tune on the same day with CSN&Y singing OHIO was amazing. When young people were drafted and shipped to a foreign war, the protests were ignored until they became too hard to ignore. Like 'Teach Your Children Well' both sides need to be seen and understood. There can be wisdom on both sides of father and son.
One of those songs that hits you in the gut and doubles you over. Always has. At 21, I got on an airplane and left a home in which I was not understood or welcomed. Cat's music has alway had a spot in my heart.
I knew your head shaking would change when his voiced went up a few octaves, loved this man growing up in the seventies, later on he kept himself out off the public eye thankfully he is blessed us again with his music.
I have been fortunate to have a guitar duet partner for 31 years. We met as hired musicians at a church in St Paul in 1990 and have been playing together since (although mostly secular music since 1992). We split the parts so I do the father parts and Tim does the son parts. It also allows us to do the overlapping parts in the last couple verses. Cat Stevens has a lot of really good songs, some of which I've played over the years. Good stuff!
Beautiful song beautiful message as you can see he has one voice and then he changes it up. One is the father and 1 is the son. Expressing their feelings.
He's been around since the 60's. he is 73 now. He converted to Islam in 1977, then sold all his guitars in 1979 for charity & quit music completely, devoting himself to his new religion. Wild world is probably my favorite song by him.
Great song and artist!! I believe one of the most poinient lyrics is often overlooked…the father tells his son “I was once like you are now, and I know it’s not easy…to be calm when there’s something going on” trying to let his son know that he was in his shoes and understands the frustration…Tea for the Tillerman was one of the first LP’s I bought in 1970…will always be a classic - beautiful acoustic guitar
Nice reaction. Like everyone has mentioned already, he has so many fabulous songs; too many to list. When my sister was 14 and I was 11, she got one of his first greatest hits albums in 1975 and for months straight we listened to the entire album every night at bedtime 😊.
This is my favourite Cat Stevens song. And he has many many more hits. This song initially was a song Stevens wrote for a movie on the Russian civil war about a father begging his son to not leave n go to war. But the project was sidelined by Cat’s hospitalization due to TB. He has done version of this with his older self singing the father part to his younger version. It's really good, has real meaning because he's now believes the advice given.
I lost my dad 6 years ago and it still feels like yesterday, I have a son and tell him every day I love him we can lead our children in the right direction and provide wisdom but they also have to learn for themselves. This song reminds me of what a great dad I have and want to be and how he inspired me to be the man I am today.
Legendary singer songwriter who left the business on a religious journey changing his name decades ago. Guarantee you have heard at least 3 or 4 of his many hits such as Peace Train, First Cut is the Deepest,Where Do The Children splay, Morning Has Broken, Hard Headed Woman, and Old Schoolyard!
Literally grew up singing this song. Then I left high school three weeks before graduation for the Army, lived in eight states and drove truck for a decade. I knew I had to go.
I grew up with is incredible sounds, songs and melodies. He does have a unique voice and it is very guiding. He has a few others that you would enjoy such as Wild World, Peace Train, Moonshadow and so many more! He wrote a couple of children's book as well. A bit of magic right there.
Great classic song which tells a excellent story. My father passed away 2 years ago at the age of 92. I A uneducated man who provided by becoming an auto mechanic. Him and my mother were married 63 years. I learn and loved.
Born Steven Demetre Georgiou 1948 in London to a Greek/Turkish father & a Swedish mother & his parents operated the Moulin Rouge! He dated Carly Simon in the early 70s & she wrote the song "anticipation" about him! He had a religious experience in 1977, gave up music, converted to a Muslim, changed his name to Yusuf {Arabic for Joseph} Islam & he & his wife spend most of their time living in Dubai! He was also put on a "watch list" & prohibited from coming to the US after 9/11 but was taken off the list after 2 years! Father & son is my favorite song by him that I dedicated to the birth of my son 32 years ago! PEACE LOVE n HIPPYNESS ✌☮
Cat Stevens totally informed my "formative years" and many of his songs connect beautiful memories--playing guitar while my sister sang "Morning Has Broken" at our church's Easter sunrise service, singing "Moonshadow" to my baby brother as we made our way through the woods at night to keep him from being scared, dancing and singing with my groovy friends to "Peace Train". I remember hearing about people burning their Cat Stevens albums when he dropped out of the music industry after he converted to Islam. What idiots. So glad I still have all of mine.
I immediately memorized the entire album of Tea For The Tillerman when it came out in 1970, and sang it constantly (probably drove family and friends crazy). I was 13. I recently learned that one of his first big hits in the UK, "I Love My Dog (More Than I Love You)," was based on a melody by another of my musical heroes, Yusef Lateef!
I would have thought this was just a beautiful song before Guardians of the Galaxy 2…but now it wrecks me. I am crying by the second verse. I love this song, great reaction!
He was one of the best singers ever! He ended up following another path and I miss him but we all need to do the thing that speaks to our hearts. He never made a bad song. Moon shadow, Peace Train, The First Cut is the Deepest, Hard Headed Woman to name a few!
Yes you got it it is a conversation his low voice is the father and the high voice is the son. You are the first to understand that it is a conversation.
He was the biggest music star in the world at one point. He had a huge numbers of hits and sold millions of records. The songs have aged well. Tuneful and well produced.
When this song came out in the 70's (I was a young teenager) my boyfriend gave me this album & amazes me that people actually still listen to him, although he is superb, has a son too. xx
Yusuf Islam is an amazing artist. He writes beautiful songs. A couple of my favorites of his are Wild World, Peace Train and Where do the children play
Great song, amazing artist!: "Peace Train", "Wild World", "Moonshadow", "Morning has broken", "Lady D'Arbanville"...and many others!
The Wind is my personal favorite
Remember the days in the old school yard... It came out in my high school days, and when I hear it, I think back to those days.

Second that!..You beat me to it..The entire album is great...Not a dog in the bunch.
Same for "Teaser and the Firecat". He was at the top of his form with those two albums.
Great album, all time favorite
He’s a great singer and songwriter and I would agree this is my favorite album

He was one of the best singers ever! He ended up following another path and I miss him but we all need to do the thing that speaks to our hearts. He never made a bad song. Moon shadow, Peace Train, The First Cut is the Deepest, Hard Headed Woman to name a few!
He is transcendent. Morning Has Broken is also such a great song
Yes you got it it is a conversation his low voice is the father and the high voice is the son. You are the first to understand that it is a conversation.
Cat Steven's has so many great songs! Keep going!
He was the biggest music star in the world at one point. He had a huge numbers of hits and sold millions of records. The songs have aged well. Tuneful and well produced.
From the moment I could talk I was ORDERED to listen. Big difference.
If I recall, it's a conversation between a father and son after the son enlists in the military.
Your reacting to a lot of the music of my youth.....Makes me smile :)
Such a great song. So glad he came back to the music.
His song Moonshadow was one of my kids’ favorite lullabies.
When this song came out in the 70's (I was a young teenager) my boyfriend gave me this album & amazes me that people actually still listen to him, although he is superb, has a son too. xx
Truly a great song writer.
Peace Train By CAT STEVENS ☮️🙏😁🎸🎵👍 HAPPY BIRTHDAY BJ
The deep voice is the father the high voice is the son. His songs are spiritual he later became a Muslim cleric
Yusuf Islam is an amazing artist. He writes beautiful songs. A couple of my favorites of his are Wild World, Peace Train and Where do the children play
