    The sequence at 5:16….. The fact that Gems caught this on film is a talent in and of itself. I would have never noticed this on my own. That is high level shit by Shakur. Borderline mind blowing. To throw Oscar off balance by forcing his leg back, which created a clear path to the uppercut. That’s ridiculous when you really think about it. And as Gems pointed out, you have to push off the back foot first to create the momentum and leverage needed to push the leg back as well as maintaining your balance to shoot the uppercut. That’s my understanding of it at least. This kid is a wizard in that ring man.

    Shakur really on a different level. You know he’s on his way to mastering the art when he makes it look easy. For the most part I’ve noticed his hand work, level changes, combos, set ups, but I’ve never really paid attention to his feet. His foot work is phenomenal for his age. Thanks Boxing Gems for putting me on!-that foot shuffle he did to Oscar had me weak.

    That narration from Shakur about understanding Boxing, and calling himself a master, needs to be his thing.

  • @PAPALAMRecordings
    @PAPALAMRecordings 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    When i was watching this fight i was thinking to my self about Bivol-Canelo fight once again. How is that possible that Valdez doesn't have any skills on closing the distance. There are LOADS of simple footwork tricks you can do to come close at an angle, that are taught first year boxing class. At least there where I'm from (Russia) St. Petersburg. So that was almost difficult to watch for me. Could it be that these new Mexican-style boxers/trainers just don't know them ? If they know , why not use them?
    Btw i was actually trained in the same school of boxing as Bivol, his amateur coach was Isaev Nikolay, who built his boxing skills from when he was 10 years old, and with whom he became the most decorated amateur, at least in the history of Russian amateur boxing, and i was trained by his son Isaev Timur. So i am quite familiar with, what it is like to deal with that style and how to perform that style on other people. Being able to really quickly close the gap is an absolute must, especially if you're smaller. Otherwise, its just an absolute target practice. Dmitry of course evolved since then, but his boxing school is pretty clear. If you notice, his style is pretty unique even for eastern European region, this is how amatuer Soviet boxers did their things in the 70s and 80s.
    Sorry for off top, man , but this fight was a mismatch. You have to develop your footwork in boxing, even before punches, boxing starts with the movement.

    • @BoxingGems
      @BoxingGems  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Cool back story fam! And I agree. It’s definitely the case where different gyms and different schools of boxing don’t focus on or don’t teach certain skills/manuevers/elements of boxing. We will see if Canelo has the same issues this weekend.

    • @PAPALAMRecordings
      @PAPALAMRecordings 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@ritzkola2302 ok, I will try to do my best explaining the fundamentals of his style. The main idea is balance, so that the center of mass of your body pretty much doesn't move relative to the footing. So if you move - you move both feet under you simultaneously, and even every punch in a combination is thrown with it's own little hop, like micro jump.
      Also to achieve this you must stay pretty much upwardly, that's why this style can be susceptible to over hands. Punches must connect with the target at the moment of landing them feet to the ground, that's how the stiffness is achieved.
      Also punching mechanism resembles throwing. You must be relaxed, you shoulders, and shoulder blades must be loose, and you tighten your arm at the moment of impact, you literally throwing hands. That's why his hooks look kinda strange to not accustomed eyes. But everything is thrown like this, jabs, crosses, uppercuts.
      Overall, this style can be characterized as mobile, extremely energy efficient, because you don't fight with inertia after every punch, punches are relaxed, and rangy. Also it's difficult to master, the techniques are not intuitive.
      Hope it helped.

    At some point I expected oscar to go for broke but I guess shakur hits harder than Oscar expected. Oscar was just happy to survive. The real challenges for shakur are at 135. He washes everyone at 130. I want to see shakur against Isaac Cruz just to see him fight against relentless pressure. I’m sure shakur will rise to the challenge but it would be an awesome fight.

    Great breakdown as always man! Kind of surprised me that Valdez still came out with that high guard strategy. As you mentioned before, Stevenson destroys high guard almost every fight😂 on the other hand, i am also surprised that Stevenson got warned by referee for probing that lead hand. Is that really illegal in boxing?

    There's nothing in that division for Shakur. Hopefully he becomes undisputed soon so that he can move up and we can see his skills on display against more worthy opposition. The lightweight division(135lbs) would be stacked. Can't wait!

    I figured that Valdez would at least try and adapt the static high guard since it was so clearly a liability against a guy like Shakur (they team should checked out your breakdown). But nope! Tiger cant change his stripes apparently. Valdez had nothing for Stevenson but that squared straight right hand. Im looking forward to Shakur moving to 135, no one at 130 has anything for him at this point. Well ... except a couple more belts

    • @BoxingGems
      @BoxingGems  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A lot of those straight rights weren’t landing. Even less we’re landing flush. The pull was making them grazing shots for the most part. I thought the same thing until I rewatched it.

    • @Imposo.V
      @Imposo.V 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BoxingGems He was definitely landing those even until the late rounds. The reason why some weren’t landing flush isn’t because of Shakurs pull, which was usually too late, but because Oscar was typically far out of range. Yet he was still able to touch Shakur.

  • @markprater1

    Shakur leaves no doubt that he has the intelligence, heart and skills to be one of the all time greats.
    He's good looking and not shy about making controversial statements.
    He's even beating better competition more thoroughly than Crawford was at the same age.
    But to be the biggest name in boxing, a Superstar to be truly feared, he has to infuse his style with the one quality that Crawford adopted later in his career: the willingness to
    take a few more risks and consistently stop these guys.
    I'm sure that he knows he's going to get hit more, so maybe he's not sure he does enough damage to believe he hits hard and clean enough to get the stoppage yet.
    That's what I'm waiting for.
    Mayweather was stopping these dudes at that age...
