Bullets is their best album for me. I don't care what anyone says. The production and lack of polish along with Gerard's super emotional and manic voice is what MAKES it for me. (To be honest, the production isn't even THAT raw..it's pretty well produced actually. I've listened to much more unpolished stuff) That's the whole point of the album, it doesn't sound perfect. I love it honestly. The rest of their stuff is so over-produced for me.

I finally listened to The Black Parade in its entirety, and it left such a great impression! I've decided to listen to the rest of their discography, and they quickly won me over. The Black Parade is one of my all time favorite concept albums. The concept behind it regarding the afterlife of a cancer patient adding in to the Tim Burton-esque type of surrealism in the artwork makes it up. Three Cheers holds a special place in my heart when it comes to high school, especially "Thank You For The Venom".

    • @litigatedparadox8946
      @litigatedparadox8946 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I know man every time I listen to black parade from beginning to end, I can just *feel* the emotional beats of the story, every time I listen to it, it always makes me think about things like, death, the afterlife, and wether anything I do really matters, I could go on and on about this album it’s incredible

    • @tangocatz7488
      @tangocatz7488 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I used to really love thank you for the venom because i felt like I could relate to the lines “you’re running after something that you'll never kill” (I related it to my personal experience with E.D's) but then I looked up what some of the actual lyrics meant and after I found out it wasn’t what i thought it was about, it kind of lost it’s meaning for me, and I’m honestly quite upset about that because now that song will never be the same for me. I still love TCFSW tho :)

    Dear Young Sir,
I didn't come to fully appreciate MCR until I began to grapple with my own mid-life crisis. Turns out much of the emotional upheaval you experience while coming into adulthood, is the same thing you feel when you tell yourself ur nearing the beginning of the end. Who knew?
This band, their music, has resonated with me at this stage of my life in the most visceral way these past few years.
After listening to your reviews for their collection of albums I think you should be the one to give the introduction to their induction into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. I doubt anyone else could do a better job.
All the best for your continued success in life.

Hey nice video man! Choosing between Black Parade and American Idiot is a really tough decision to make because they are both phenomenal albums! So no harm in saying Black Parade is better. On another note, if you are going to do a Throwback Thursday review, can you review Slippery When Wet, because that was the album that got Gerard Way into music and given how you recently just ranked MCR and they are from New Jersey like Bon Jovi, it would be perfect! Their 2005 album Have a Nice Day would work too, because it's one of my favorite albums ever along with American Idiot and Meteora. Anyways, keep up the good work man and I can't wait for your RHCP ranked video!

Hey Jon, we're in the same age group, and I became who I am in large part to being alive in the last decade (at least for now) that rock music was at the forefront of the mainstream. To be honest, there are a handful of albums that absolutely define not only that era, but I truly believe music historians will look back on and agree were among the best rock outings of the decade and also of all time, the same way works by the Beatles and Led Zeppelin are revered. The Black Parade is one of those albums for me (American Idiot and Hybrid Theory & Meteora as a pair are the others if you were wondering.) Those works, being the magnum opuses they are, make it extremely difficult to rank among themselves for me, but something about The Black Parade as a body of work gives it a slight edge to me...I simply can't listen to one song without wanting to experience the album in sequence, unfettered and I'm okay with that. I totally understand that choice..that'll never diminish the importance and legacy of American Idiot. They can both share space in your heart...that is the thing about love, you have an unlimited supply of it to distribute as you so choose. Awesome to see your evolution on the subject.

I never thought American Idiot was the best album of all time. There were some good songs, they won a Grammy, but they never captivated the audience as well as The Black Parade. There's an interesting concept, a man dying of cancer goes into the afterlife and reflects his life with the lives of other people, in the end, we're left with the question 'Does The Patient live or die?'. The songs have managed to emotionally affect you in so many ways. Everything was perfect, the vocals of Gerard Way, the heart they put into every performance, the guitar riffs, the guitar solos, the stories, the lyrics, the bass lines, the incredible drumming. There was not a single weak song, every song was worthy of your attention, every song grabbed you and wrapped you around its little finger. I could never find a better album.

I was pretty much spot on in my predictions for how this would turn out lol. Anyway, my list would be:
    1. Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge (favorite album of all time)
    2. Danger Days (it kills me how many people dismiss this album just because of the sound change)
    3. The Black Parade (I mean, it's a near-flawless album; what else is there to say?)
    4. I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love (I have to be in a certain mood to listen to this one, but it's a great album and has a special place in my heart)
    5. Conventional Weapons (not that I hate it or anything, or even particularly dislike it, but I totally get why the guys ditched it and started over with Danger Days. Out of the 10 songs, I like about 5. The rest just feel a bit generic and uninspired to me.)

I have no idea what to make my username I think my list is in the same order as you. Although for slightly different reasons and Danger Days is sometimes in my top spot (it’s almost as if people’s dislike for it makes me love it more.) I need to be in a certain mindset for TBP just like I need to be in a certain but different mindset to listen to Bullets. Which makes the albums difficult to order. They are all great albums too.

    Mine would have to be
    5. Bullets
    4. Conventional Weapons
    3. Three Cheers
    2. Black Parade
    1. Danger Days
The top three are close, the top two even closer. But I personally have a lot of nostalgia for DD and adore the direction they went with this album. I'm also really happy to see you give a shout-out to "Gun" off CW; that song is easily in my top 5 tracks from MCR. Out of curiosity, have you every listened to anything by Thursday? I quite like them, and love their album War All The Time.

TBH, I instantly preferred TBP to AM as soon as I heard it. I don't know why, but Green Day didn't have the effect on me as bands like MCR Linkin Park and BMTH even tho Green Day were the first band I got into that wasn't something from my parents.

    1. three cheers: this is hands-down my favorite album of all time. it’s been my favorite album since i was 11, and it will continue to be my favorite album for the rest of my life. i’ve never heard anything like it before; i could listen to it a million times and every time would feel like i’m hearing it for the first time. in my opinion, this is their most timeless album. songs that i related to as a 12 year old can still apply to me as a 17 year old. although the black parade got me into mcr, this album opened me up to so many different artists and genres. without it, i wouldn’t have discovered alternative rock, pop punk, and eventually grunge. three cheers just strikes a chord in me where the black parade never could. i adore the storytelling, instrumentals, and vocals on this album. everything is perfect; there isn’t a single song i dislike. best song is i never told you what i do for a living, worst is hang ‘em high.
    2. the black parade: objectively, this is a fantastic album. it is by far the most polished of mcr’s discography, and it is the most consistent in regards to concept. the tortured and emotional story of the patient is hard-hitting and easy to follow. additionally, the black parade has FANTASTIC b-sides. kill all your friends is in my top 10 mcr songs list. this is the album that got me into mcr. however, i feel that all of the other albums are ignored due to the black parade’s commercial success. it’s a shame; my chemical romance is so much more than their radio hits. best song is this is how i disappear, worst is house of wolves.
    3. bullets: it pains me to put this album third. i was extremely close to putting it second, but i ultimately decided that it should go here. i love everything about this album: the raw emotion, the heavy guitars, and the tortured lyrics. yes, this album is not nearly as polished as any of their other works, but that’s what makes it so unique. best song is demolition lovers, worst is this is the best day ever.
    4. conventional weapons: i adore this album. it’s a shame that many people don’t listen to this because they don’t consider it to be one of mcr’s albums. i love a little over half of the songs on this album, but the rest are forgettable and generic. best song is burn bright, worst is a tie between tomorrow’s money and make room!!!!
    5. danger days: i like this album, but not nearly as much as the rest on this list. a lot of it has to do with the album’s sound; i prefer mcr’s harder, grittier stuff. i only really like a handful of songs, as the rest just aren’t my taste. best song is save yourself, i’ll hold them back, worst is sing.

  • @godnotavailable2094
    @godnotavailable2094 6 ปีที่แล้ว +149

    My ranking:
*4.I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love* - This album has all the potential in the world to become great if it weren't for one major obstacle: Gerard's god-awful OBNOXIOUS voice. Originally, I despised this record due to the unprofessionalism of the vocals, an absolute mess of unclean screaming and whining that I simply could not bear. However, after exploring multiple genres that often utilized this unclean approach to singing (hardcore punk, sludge metal, early grunge), I thought I'd come back to this record with a new-found respect for it. NOPE. Turns out, Gerard's vocals are still whiny as hell here and turn the whole album experience sour. Messy vocals can be done well, but that is unfortunately not the case for MCR's first album, which is a shame because of how many great riffs appear here. 3/10, would be 8/10 with better vocals.
*3.Danger Days* - Danger Days sees the band returning from a short hiatus and shifting into a more pop-rock sound with electronic elements. The result? Pretty damn good. It can sound a bit cheesy at times, with an overall feeling that the band are doing something completely out of their comfort zone and not where they belong, but for the most part, there's still a bit of a rock edge most present on songs such as "Na Na Na" for example, and they pull it off just fine. 8/10
*2.Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge* - Three Cheers showcases a drastic improvement in the vocal department, swapping out intolerable post-hardcore flavored screams for a slightly less punk-inspired emo yelp, which actually suits the music built by Frank and Ray. The songwriting has also minimally but noticeably improved, focusing less on hard rocking riffs and more on what we know as the standard emo formula. And no one does emo better than MCR. 8/10
*1.The Black Parade* - My Chemical Romance drift even further away from their post-hardcore roots and create one of the best alternative rock albums of the 2000's without sacrificing a bit of the emo appeal that their early fans may have found so enjoyable. The songwriting has improved even more, and any trace of generic 2000's "you don't understand me" tendencies that may have been subtly or not-so-subtly present on it's 2004 predecessor are completely gone, leaving nothing short of a masterpiece left behind for us fans to chew on. 9/10
EDIT: Sorry for the long comment, holy shit I got carried away.

There's another review/Reaction channel where every fan wants him to react to Bullets because it's good (becoming a fan favorite just because someone else told them it's great or because they don't want to talk negative of it, and I for one am guilty of that) so hearing that others give their honest and observative opinion of the album's production and everything else every "fangirl" doesn't want to admit is pretty refreshing. I guess I grew up! :)

I wrote out my ranking in the comment box before I watched the video but we had the same list 😂 The Black Parade is one of my favorite albums of all time, if not my favorite. I really feel you, I'm not a hardcore Green Day fan but I enjoy them causally. I more had to compare The Black Parade to Folie a Deux, Infinity On High, Humbug, and Pretty. Odd. and as much as I love all those albums and count them in my favorite albums, I played The Black Parade since it's release way too many times to count. Nostalgia plays a big role in my favorite albums list, I got into music in 2006 and between 2006 to around 2009 I heavily relied on it to cope with my preteen and teen angst. With the exception of Humbug because I didn't listen to Arctic Monkeys until 2013, all of those albums are so deeply ingrained in my memories of middle and high school because they're literally the only albums I ever listened to. It's so epic and theatrical and so well made. I'm not dragging my other favorite albums and artists, this album just takes the cake and I will defend that album until I die probably.

Heyy Jon! Thanks for doing this I loved it and I agree with you on most of the things you say here. MCR is one o my favorite bands ever, it brings me so many good memories of my teenage days and of a time where I was finding out about a lot of music. Sometimes I get scared that the reason why I love them so much is for the nostalgic feeling and the sentimental value and not so much the music itself, but seeing you talking about them the way I would makes me excited and happy, they really are the best! For me their albums would be ranked like this:
    5. Bullets (3/5)
    4. Danger Days
    3. Conventional Weapons
    2. Sweet Revenge
    1. Black Parade
Also... I know this isn't related but would you do a video on your #AskJon section about what you think on electronic music and the fact that some of them are considered talent-less when it comes to live shows, or for (apparently) not playing instruments? I would love to hear your thoughts on it! Have a wonderful Sunday, hugs from Mexico.

Personally, I would say that Danger Days is my favorite MCR album. As PHENOMENAL and LEGENDARY The Black Parade is, I personally feel like DD is ever so slightly higher. I love the world building of the album with the dystopian post-apocalyptic future story and the sort of comic book vibe. It is without a doubt my 3rd favorite album behind Abbey Road (#1) and American Idiot (#2). I do love that BP and DD were both concept albums. I have a GINORMOUS love for concept albums.
I was shocked when you said that Black Parade surpassed American Idiot as your favorite album of all time but I completely understand. Albums change over time for us and we grow as individuals. I'm so happy that you've revealed and shared that to the world. I recently decided/discovered that Danger Days surpassed Love, Lust Faith + Dreams as my 3rd favorite album and it was something I had been debating for a good year now. I'm so happy that you've posted this and shared your thoughts.

5: Conventional Weapons (over-produced, Ideas better executed in Danger Days, Still has Great hooks)
4: I Brought You My Bullets (Great Production, interesting story-telling, but very unpolished at points)
3: Danger Days (Love the Glam Rock/Brit-Pop influences, Has the best final 3rd in the discography, Batshit insane ambition that's just like Gerard's comics, but the 1st half still has some questionable production decisions)
2.5: The Mad Gear and the Missle Kid (Most Underrated project by the band, If this would have been a full-length album it would replace the number 1 spot.)
2: The Black Parade (One of the most Iconic albums of the 2000's, Fantastic Singles, music videos, and hooks)
1: Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge (Best Story-Telling, Best Riffs, and Has the Wittiest and clever lyrics)
Also, totally agree with you on Black Parade. It's Either that, To Pimp a Butterfly or Blonde for me most days.

My music taste has shifted a lot recently so mine now is completely different to mine 2 months ago
    5. Bullets - I've never really been able to get into this album but i've started to give it more of a chance
    4. 3 Cheers - This was my second favorite for ages but recently i've found myself visiting it less and less. I still enjoy it massively but not as much.... please don't kill me
    3. Conventional Weapons - I've always enjoyed all the songs from these singles and i find the diverse sound refreshing and have never really gotten tired of them
    2. Black Parade - This has been 1 on many occasions and it really depends on what mood i'm in. There isn't a single bad or mediocre song on here and the entire ride is fantastic. This could easily be my first when i wake up tomorrow, it's constantly changing.
    1. Danger Days - As stated earlier this changed constantly and this has been a favorite of mine since i heard it. The change in sound worked great and every song here is brilliant

My Chemical Romance is the best band of all time. Why? They did not have a single weak album, every one of the albums had their own story. They were (lol were, ouch) a band with so much potential. To be honest, they really are an underrated band. Their albums' greatness were never recognized. It's disappointing really, how other people are not able to grasp the complete wonders and beauty of this band and their works. To me, they truly are the most underrated band of all time. They were consistent with the great work and have die-hard fans that will stay by their side forever. The soul they put into their works and performances appeal to the fans more than I have ever known they could. The way they convinced people life is worth living. There really isn't a better band.

Fantastic Review Jon! Black Parade is also my favourite album of all time. Usually any album contains at least one song i either don't like or view as filler but Black Parade is the only album I can think of that defies this. Also funny how I agree with almost all your favourite songs on each album, especially light behind your eyes, demolition lovers and fashion statement. I think the only one I disagree with is bulletproof heart which I think is the weakest song in there discography. I'm glad you enjoy listening to it though, just my personal opinion. I also think Tomorrows money is one of their most underrated songs. My Chem are amazing and they have one of the most friendly fan-bases. Great video again! Keep em' coming!
    My list:
    5. Conventional Weapons
    4. Danger Days
    3. Bullets
    2. Three Cheers
    1. Black Parade

    Me: Well crap

Me: ...oh. I get it it. Well screw you, comment board!
Edit: btw, I 100% agree with your ranking, and was kinda shocked by your decision

i remember the black parade being so hyped, for me at least, and it really did deliver on it. they killed it. and all the music videos they came out with, especially famous last words, was so dope.

Nice switch, Jon! I myself am stuck between Green Day's Dookie and Joe Hisaishi's Princess Mononoke.

5.) Conventional Weapons (I haven't actually listened to it so yeah)
4.) Danger Days (while I haven't heard all of it, I haven't heard about 5 songs off of it and it just doesn't appeal to me)
3.) Black Parade (the only reason that it is so low is because I listened to it so many times I can't listen to it anymore)
2.) Bullets (I love how raw both vocals and instrumentals are, I'm just a big fan of rough sounding music)
1.) Three Cheers (raw emotion mixed with amazing instrumental and vocal performances, perfect record in my opinion)

Agree completely with your Ranking here. Three Cheers is my absolute favorite MCR album. I just love the riffs and melodies much more than those on The Black Parade. BUT I cannot dispute how fan-fucking-tastic the Black Parade is. It takes everything I love about Three Cheers and amps it up to 11. Plus it has the best "hidden track" ever! Excited for RHCP video. They are actually one of my mom's favorite bands (a long with Pearl Jam). Keep up the good work Jon! (PS your name always makes me think of Garfield cuz that's his owner's name lol)
