    Abbey Road One GRAND BRASS sounds outstanding! Very well recorded section of four horns and tuba as well as a combination of horns and cellos. Very easy to play. Powerful swells. Beautiful room sound. You have to hear it to believe it.
    This is an in-depth review of the library. Watch it to learn a bit more about and to get a better understanding of Abbey Road One newest addition.

      Not at all true, no matter how good you are, you will be limited to the sounds capable if you do not have either good libraries or certain libraries. If you try making a symphonic orchestral cue but decide to use studio recorded libraries with few players. Then your not getting a symphonic sound. If you making intimate mellow sections but instead use a library like Ark 1 instead of a library made specific to that sound. Well it’s gonna sonically clash due to style differences (although ark 1 might be able to pull it off). Require a piece that requires bass clarinet but your library doesn’t contain that instrument, well you miss out. Sample libraries are really different to synths. The cheaper the sample library, the more it’s quality reflects its price. BBCSO discover is free and really does a bang up job, but it’s still to limited for even competent composers.

    • @toddfrombethesda6963
      @toddfrombethesda6963 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Better yet if you need to have full control of each section ( which there are multitude of reasons why you need those individual section). but your library is all ensembles that make it impossible to play certain instruments but themselves. Well your fucked.

    The shorts are actually 3 dynamics, not the limited range demonstrated in this video. In the Spitfire plugin the dynamics fader which is shown towards the top limits the dynamic range on short articulations (like a MIDI velocity limiter) so if all the way to the top you have only 1 layer. This should be at the bottom to hear all 3!

    • @darrinsiberia
      @darrinsiberia ปีที่แล้ว

      Completely false! Dynamic slider at 0 results in complete silence. Is that the joke? Even w slider only barely up expression slider results in no changes ... it seems that, in the staccato articulation anyway, (the timbre / mp - mf patch changes within the note) are triggered by key stroke velocity more than anything else!!!!!

    A very informative review, thanks Marc. I like your style of exploring the adjustments that can be made to the samples. Very refreshing to see the capabilities of a library fully demonstrated as other so-called reviews I've seen tend to just play the samples straight out-of-the-box with no practical example of the keyboard skills that get the best out of the samples. Though I have all the other parts of AROOF I'm still undecided about this expansion but thanks to your review I now have a much clearer understanding of its strengths and weaknesses.

    This is on point. I have Symphonic Brass and Hollywood Brass and this is on point. Spitfire Brass libraries sound big because of Air Lyndhurst but not aggressive, where as HB has the “grrr” at the top. So I just combine the two 6 horn legato patches and the combination sounds great!

Every time I buy a new library (it’s mostly in the middle of writing a song or with a part in mind or if there’s a sale), I find that I don’t spend enough time exploring the capabilities of the library. Scoring Legato patch is horns with cellos, that's why it sounds the way it does. I do think Spitfire focuses on the "quiet" of instruments so all their brass lack the bite or aggression of CineBrass or JunkyXL Brass.

    Great review Marc! Very thorough and full of helpful observations and insights with regard to the structure of these libraries. For me, I've been loving the Abbey Road series because it does one thing very well; it recreates that smooth, silky feel of the sonic signature that's so apparent in the scores that were recorded there. It obviously doesn't do everything that we need orchestral libraries to do, but it does do that one thing extremely well.

    There is definitely far worse Spitfire Libraries. :-) I believe the Octaves in these patches mean the Tuba is an octave below the 4 horns. But I could be wrong. Some of the missing patches you mentioned are in Abbey Road Foundations. This Grand Brass Library is really meant to do a couple of things and do them well and that's it. It's more of an add on than a full library.

    Edit: sometimes you might need more. But only on very special cases. For spitfire, I tried creating the 4 horns + tuba ensemble on BBCSO core and to no surprise, they still sound rounder and less aggressive than cinebrass. I would take this as the "spitfire signature sound". But there is still a trick at least fpr BBCSO to make it aggressive. Add a solo horn and bass bones. 😁

    By the way, I just rewatched Christian Henson’s comparison of Abbey Road One (not this, I am talking of the orchestral foundations) vs Albion One and BBC. The low brass there has 5 dynamic layers. I assumed they’d have the same in these “selection” patches. Apparently, it’s only two! Thanks again.

    • @rumar4u
      @rumar4u 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I watched the video as well, Spitfire has a unique sound, combined with Abbey Road they did a great thing. But as Marc in the review stated, the top (Loudest) part in Spitfire's libraries lack the extra punch (aggressive power) that stands out above the rest of the orchestra as it's supposed to. I'm pretty sure the day they decide to do a fff layer to compliment their other libraries, it will be their best selling library. LoL

    • @raagamuffin
      @raagamuffin 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try VSL Big Bang Orchestra's Brass and you will find amazing dynamics and the fff is incredible. Hercules low brass is so powerful! Their 6 horns patch called Jupiter is very good too and sound a bit rounder than their 12 horns flund in Zodiac. A bit less aggression at top end but still amazing dynamics.
      The Zodiac library includes 12 horns and 9 trombones and they sound loud as f***k and compete with JXL Brass in my opinion as being the gruntiest top available. VSL nailed those brass in the Big Bang Orchestra series.

    • @rumar4u
      @rumar4u 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mistral-unizion-music Yeah VSL Libraries sound amazing and their dynamics are the best out there... I don't know about the top fff as powerful as other libraries are. JXL Brass is pretty amazing as well... but for the money, the CineBrass deal of their 4 Brass libraries bundle at 50% (Back in August) was unbeatable.
      The reason I suggested Audio Imperia's Talos was because their top fff layers are very detailed and sounds huge, powerful, aggressive. I dig deep in Zodiac but it's so massive that you lose details... And I already own VSL Appassionata which is huge, their tone is quite like my taste, but you lose details.

      Agreed, some odd design choices with the ARO Libraries. I wish they would have just gone ahead, made a proper library within Abbey Road (with Legatos, the arguably most important articulations) and then taking elements from that and selling them for people who are beginning (the Foundation part) or just need some smaller complementary elements (the addons). Would have made way more sense to me.

The strongest they have to offer is somewhere between mezzoforte and forte. Where is the blaring brass? When will Spitfire Audio finally blow my hair back? Probably never... Personally, I think that big loud top end distortion on brass is overused. Everyone is seeking that Hans Zimmer blast, but a lot the time smooth is a better choice for melodies rather than hits. That guttural farting brass sound has its place, but this library just isn't trying to cater for that, and at £49 it's got to pick its battles.

    spitfire brass samples are very subdued... I bought 8dio century brass to supplement my BBCSO core...

    10 minutes on layers everyone listen, not so much, maybe you could insist. But thank you for comparing libraries (but there are others than cinebrass)

    5:30 The (rich) dynamic layers of my roland lx 17 got killed by BBC Discover. And Labs is just a bunch of FX with some good samples for here and there. Also dynamics are unreliable or inexistent there.This was my first impression of this company. Second impression: Christian Hanson is a cool friend, but looks not that smart and well educated composer for this function, sorry. Anyway he did what others failed to try. Maybe he is inspiring because he show how far one can go without compositional skills, relying 80% in production skills. Resume: of course everything can be good in some composition, just buy if you have money raining outside. It will always give you reference, even if you don’t use the sounds.

      I don't know but I think your perspective on things are quite uninformed, or you have no ear for sounds in general. You based your opinion on what, free libraries you got from them and out of the box sounds? Discover has no mic positions and has only very basic articulations and missing functions compared with the paid stuff. And if you don't know how to program them, even the free ones, with velocities/dynamics/expression and mix them properly, I can tell you no other library is going to sound good to you, because Discover can sound very good if used properly. And what more dynamics do you expect in sound fx, as you called them?
      Spitfire has some libraries that are not for everything or for everyone and can be disappointing in some parts for musicians who want something else, like these limited but cheap Abby Road libraries, as people expect all purpose libraries and what not, but Spitfire is still leading in sample libraries. From Hans Zimmer to many other film composers, many have bought and used them from Spitfire and recommended. Sounds are sounds, from all different companies and have different purposes and timbers and such. Tons of famous composers have brought libraries from Spitfire, libraries like Eric Whitacre, Olafur, Hans Zimmer libraries, Albion libraries, chamber libraries and more. You just can't say they don't do good libraries.
      But I guess it's expected. I heard lots of new composers using good and expensive libraries and their music sounds crappier than what I can do with free sounds. And most importantly, they are meant to be layered, yet people don't know the very basic things of them. And lastly, samples are still mostly used for mockups and not to replace a real orchestra.

    Patches with multiple instruments in them are useless. You are telling yourself "it's just $50" but if you buy 2 more of these, now you need to spend $5000 on a new computer. Lucky if you use this exact instrument combination once a year. I would more likely never use it. Orchestration is composition, I don't like virtual instruments that force my hand. I want to compose, not be composed by them. Horns plus cellos is a tremendous cliché, but if you are going to do it, now you'll miss the fortissimo layer that Spitfire NEVER records... and adding other brass libraries on top does NOT sound good, it sounds totally fake.
