    Also: you can get huge amounts of the reflective insulation material for free in the dumpsters behind Edible Arrangements shops. They throw out reams of the stuff constantly.

    Thanks for the very detailed video!
    For the numbers people out there, the cozy measurements are:
    1. the width of your favorite package + 1"
    2. the length of the package x 2 PLUS 2" extra for the flap and 3" extra for the bottom (that is, your package length x 2 + 5")

      True, but then you risk smelling like food, which could be a problem if you're sleeping in an area where there are a lot of active bears around. A Backpacking Food Cozy is a safe and cheap alternative.

      To each their own! I’d expect bears to be attracted to my canister full of food and stinkables, not my clean beanie, but I’m not afraid of bears either. Cheers and happy hiking!

    Thanks, I hadn’t thought of using reflextics to do thermal cooking in before. I’m a car camper who gets an endless supply of those silver bubble wrap bags from a friend that gets precooked meals delivered for a sick relative. They are big, and actually fit into a 25qt ice cooler. I turn one inside out so the silver is on the inside, and put that inside another bag which makes it double insulated. Then put food inside the bag with frozen water bottles. Put now full bag inside the cooler. Put a piece of another bubble wrapped cut to fit being tucked in silverside down to keep cold in. It really helps the water bottles stay frozen for days longer. But now I’m thinking about how to do a rehydration & cooking with a set.

    Great idea! Funny enough I recently bought some frozen spring roll wrappers online and they came delivered in a bag just like the material you used here. They also had frozen packets of gel inside and I immediately thought this is going to be useful for backpacking as it weighs next to nothing and so I kept the packaging, I like to repurpose if I can. My plan is to freeze some steak and put it in the reflective bag with the re- frozen packets so that I can have a really nice first night meal (some instant mash potato to go along with it). Same idea as you but keeping cold instead of hot.

    I actually use a tatonka food bowl as my pan and then just slap the lid back on and stuff it in my backpack.
    I don't have to wait untill it cools down to eat and instead give it some more time to rehydrate. Also i dont have to eat the whole thing at once.
    It also works great for transporting even some fresh vegetables to later fry up for your meal.

    • @TheHungryHiker
      @TheHungryHiker  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love using Stasher bags both at home, on car camping trips, on day hikes and short backpacking trips. I typically don't use them for my longer, multi-night overnight backpacking trips because they're considerably heavier than Ziplock Freezer Bags and they're harder to clean out on trail. If it's just a one night trip where I'm not carrying a whole lot of food, then I'm more likely to use a Stasher bag or two out on trail. Hope that helps!

    Hi there. Thanks for the informative video. One question: Is the zip lock bag resistant enough to handle boiling water?? I have yet to find a zip lock bag manufacturer that says they are resistant to such high termperatures, most say around 50 celsius (122 f). Thanks

    • @TheHungryHiker
      @TheHungryHiker  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In my experience, yes. The Ziploc Freezer Bags (must be the freezer bag variety) can withstand boiling water. I tend to just let my water start to boil when cooking out on trail so the water isn’t crazy piping hot and it has always worked out fine for me. Here's a great to check out for more info on Ziploc Freezer Bag cooking: thetrek.co/is-freezer-bag-cooking-really-safe/
      Really it comes down to moderation and what you feel comfortable with.

    • @paolomrossi
      @paolomrossi ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheHungryHiker I agree. It doesn’t need to be boiling hot to rehydrate, I think it’s time that is needed more than anything, and hot water obviously speeds up the rehydration. As long as the cosy keeps it warm long enough to hydrate meal and food still stay warm. Thanks for your feedback!

    Hello Kathleen, Thank you for another informative video!
    I have a question about the ziplock freezer bags: can they handle boiling water and touching hot metal surfaces like the edge of a pot?

    • @TheHungryHiker
      @TheHungryHiker  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question! As long as you use the Ziplock Freezer Bags, they can withstand the heat from boiling water. The Ziplock sandwich bags can't so don't use those for your backpacking meals. I don't think any plastic surface is durable enough to handle directly touching a hot metal surface so I wouldn't recommend that.

    • @susiea1419

      You could do something similar for a pot, absolutely!
      I make videos here on my TH-cam Channel showing how I do things out on trail, which is why I didn't show how to make a pot cozy. I wouldn't use one. I only boil water in my pot and cook my food in a Ziplock Freezer Bag, so I don't need to keep my stove pot with a cozy. I just need to keep my food warm in the bag as it rehydrates. Plus, cooking in a pot means you have to clean it and who wants to deal with that out on trail? I know I don't. Backpacking Food Cozy for the win!
