    Great looking ovens with chimney outside cooking area which is a plus for us bakers. I built my pizza/bread oven 12 years ago based on another Australian's plans that included an ashdump in front just under the chimney, made for easy cleanup. Since our move, I'm more into a smaller one and two pizza ovens and not looking to build one myself. For anyone contemplation on buying this oven....JUST DO IT...you'll have the best of time cooking with family & friends. Thanks for your video.

    What does it look like in the middle at the top? you did not lay bricks at the very top of the dome so I am curious as to what that actually looks like from inside.

    • @TheFireBrickCo
      @TheFireBrickCo  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question, and apologies for the delayed reply! Check out our more detailed videos, and you'll see how we form the dome keystone using refractory castable. We actually provide each customer with enough bricks to go all the way to the very top with brick alone, but it's much easier to use the castable for the last section.

    It's really an artwork, beautiful. But why din't you close the top of the owen with bricks, just with concrete? (Where you say "puoring the dome keystone")

    • @TheFireBrickCo
      @TheFireBrickCo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question! Our kits actually come with enough spare bricks that the customer can cut them into the right shapes to make their dome keystone, however the mixture that we poured in to close the dome is refractory castable - it's basically unmolded fire-brick. Pour it into a mold and let it set and it has almost identical characteristics to the firebrick - just as heat resistant and long lasting. Closing the dome with bricks is certainly possible, but it takes a long time and a lot of brick cutting, and you never get to see it!

    • @TheFireBrickCo
      @TheFireBrickCo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm that doesn't sound good! Normal ceramic tiles really aren't designed to handle the kind of heat you can reach in a wood fired oven, you really need to be using fire bricks if at all possible. A temperature gauge is usually the best way of determining if the oven is ready to bake in

    Ok, so the keystone mortar on top and the large area of mortar at the joint between the dome and the entrance, on top- doesnt that create a weak spot, by having so much mortar and no brick?also, what about heat loss in those areas. I'd be interested to see this bad boy, fired up and closed under a thermal imaging camera to see where the largest areas of heat loss are. Man, you make it look easy!!! Clean, and professional. I am impressed. Adding this to the list for my summer quarantine checked sheet!!

    • @TheFireBrickCo
      @TheFireBrickCo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Audra! You would be absolutely right if the material we were using for the keystone was mortar - it's actually Refractory Castable, which is just as strong as the firebrick once it has set. It has very similar physcial characteristics to the firebrick (density, thermal conductivity and so on) so there is no more heat loss in those areas than any other part of the oven. The greatest heat loss is through the door!

    On 3:17 same mixture used above arch.

    • @TheFireBrickCo
      @TheFireBrickCo  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It a material called Refractory Castable - essentially it's a mouldable version of firebrick, able to be poured into moulds (or 'casted'). In your research you will come across pizza ovens that are made of modular sections - these pieces are made with Refractory Castable. It's brilliant stuff, with very similar thermal and mechanical properties to the firebrick. In some cases it's actually stronger than the brick!

    Awesome work...! Hey I have a question for my project... what material did you use to keep the heat.. looks like you coverd the bricks with some kind of cloth material before you plaster the whole thing?

      ekum longchari it's Ceramic Fibre Blanket, incredible insulation material

      +The Melbourne Fire Brick Company.. THANK YOU so much sir for replying.. but can I also use some other material?

      ekum longchari that's a great question! The problem you face is that you need a soft insulation material that can handle temperatures above 500 degrees C without decomposing. I've heard of rockwool being used but my understanding is that it's insulation value doesn't come close to the ceramic fibre blanket. I would try to find the blanket if you can, it goes by other names such as Isowool

    This is a little intimidating, considering I'm gonna have to make mine from scratch, but guess I might as well have a go!

      Thankyou! The oven can get to very high temperatures inside (over 800C). Yes, it's a Perlite-cement render over the mesh wire.

    Does it have to be a dome shape for optimum performance or can it be any other shape and what that tool you used in the middle to put the bricks on place as you go.
