Daily driving an FD for the last 8 years, done a handful of track days, and my first go in an MX-5 genuinely impressed me. I could drive it through some corners faster, not because there was more grip, but because it gives you so much more feedback and confidence. Extremely impressive and fun cars at the limit. The fact the latest one has reset the lineage back to the original weight and size is also incredible. No other company seems to be able to do that with their long standing models.
This is a badass video, it's awesome that you guys got a hold of a cup car too. The Miata is just such a hard platform to best for that price, that's why I'm building my NA track duty.
Nice. Great to see a Canadian perspective on this stuff, like wow actually a MX-5 GS Sport, woo. All the American sites are like "GS what"? I would like to nitpick that the stereo audio was backwards on the last scene where you're sitting on the car hoods and it was kinda screwing with my brain.
This is a great channel. I was actually getting burnt out on all the car videos and channels on youtube. This makes me want to go wrench and build a track car. Sweet video guys.
You guys have one of the best car-related channel on TH-cam right now. Been following for a long time and I believe better audio quality would benefit the skyrocketing of this channel to the top. Keep up your awesome work, Cheers!
We had a big mess up on this video. Our external mic wasn't fully plugged in so the sound you hear is from the cameras internal mic hence the horrible audio. :(
Sorry to hear that :/ In general, audio is a pain in videomaking and one small issue can result in great frustration. The bright side of it was that the engine sounded glorious no matter the mic! At least with the race version!
Lol, they do events at Shannonville in Ontario where I have seen 5 people load into one car without helmets on and the driver was smoking a cigarette while ripping around the track. They let me in in my Miata with no rollbar, at least I had a helmet unlike most of the people there that day!
Yeah I see it a lot. Just always makes me laugh. My favorite is the video of Danny Popp winning one of the ultimate street car competitions on youtube, goes out for his auto x run in oakleys and hair blowing in the wind in one of the fastest street legal cars in the country.
The Miata is back to its roots, looks like pure fun in both cars, lively for the road one and fast for the cup. That wall facing you in the last right hander before main straight would scare the ***** out of me though. Great vid, I'd love to see a miata project but I want to see Grip S14 back to this track and take the revenge over the last time ;)
Was wondering when this video was going to surface. Great hanging with you guys on that day (I have the white Si HFP). The cup car was exceptionally fast and sounded great on circuit. I was very impressed with the overall look and quality of the new MX5 compared to previous generations. Hope to see you guys out at TMP again.
For $53k or whatever that cup car costs, I wish Mazda would just grow some balls and offer something in between for the true enthusiast who doesn't need a racecar. Take he cup trim, move it above the GT and price it in the low-mid $40s with most of those suspension bits, brake rotors, wheels, etc. minus the hardcore stuff like the cage and all the obvious non-street parts. That car with those longtube headers I bet is at about the 200hp mark too considering just how restrictive the stock ones are. C'mon Mazda. Grow some balls. And give us those damn Recaros to us here in the U.S!
The stock 4-2-1 headers are in no way restrictive on any skyactiv engine and actually boost mid-range torque. And a 45 hp gain is an absurd claim from an exhaust change. The long-tube 4-1 headers were used on the cup car to move the power band up in the rev range more appropriate for racing. Oh, and any of the cup car parts can be purchased through mazdamotorsports to put on your street car :)
The Skyactiv in the MX5 does NOT get the normal bundle of snakes that the other Skyactivs get because of space issues, so it is most definitely restrictive, even compared to the other OEM headers.
"if mazda made a street car version of this....." I mean, I know what you meant, but still made me laugh! Both drivers had around 1 second per turn in each braking zone with the cup car.
"The sport pack is $4,400 lip kit is $2,200 but it does make the car look a lot more aggressive, and it should make a difference on the track" That $2,200 is purely a cosmetic upgrade... Any difference felt on track will be placebo effect
The lip kit was developed in a wind tunnel - not purely cosmetic. Those plastic pieces are just a normal part of the ND bumper. The Canadian sport pack doesn't have the lip kit like the US Club edition (check google). Canadian Sport comes with Recaros (which the US did not get), Brembos, BBS. The manual trans GS and GT in Canada already comes with the Bilsteins and the LSD.
I had tons of fun riding along via the video! At my age I believe the G forces would make my brains leak out my ears 👂 Months ago, I test drove a Miata, It was fun but I discovered the A/C to be rather anemic on a hot 104🌝 degree day. Seems one cannot have it all as they say...
Need some subs for Dave's Cup Car lap... no idea what he's saying over that brapberry jam... And for heaven's sake... it's DAMPING. The car is well-DAMPED. :D
Iv'e been building my RX8GT turbo for 5 years and went to the track and two stock 2016 MX-5's were almost keeping up with me ffs. (It was a shake down of a newly built Renesis but still really surprising)
I had a similar experience. Porsche Boxster, race exhaust, no cats, CAI, Eibach racing springs, under drive pulley. Older mx-5's/miata's were keeping up.
Looked like your skills as drivers were able to push the street car past it's limits but you couldn't push the race car past it's limits. I say this since the race car laps seemed much smoother and controlled.
We were still sliding the Cup car around a bit, but because it has less roll and a much stickier set of tires it does deliver a more precise and controlled driving experience. With a lower grip tire, you inevitably do a bit more sliding around. Had we pushed harder, we probably could have squeezed another second out of each car in terms of lap times.
Well, if you crunch the race car version, you have to be able to get replacement parts. If you really want upgrade components, just tell Mazda that your street Miata is the race version. ;-) Yeah, I presume it's not that easy or cheap.
David Pratte You should! Few local guys built one and they love it. Well all but the tranz issues right now. If you need some parts advice hit my up, I have my own build list notebook lol. I'm either sticking with my STX classed brz or... something V8 powered lol.
WHERE was this shot? The "GS"??? No, not in the US! The Club is the midrange car, and neither Ricarro seats, nor leather seats are an option. Likewise, in the Grand Tourismo version, you can't get the performance bits. . .
There are legit turbo and supercharger kits for the stock engine that can give you an extra 50HP without upsetting the balance. That's what I'd go with instead ;)
Ya our S2k cost us about $30k to this point and it is faster than the Cup car, but if you want to go spec racing the MX-5 is great value in a super fun car and a super competitive series.
Oh for sure, and a fair bit of our budget was spent on fixing things that were worn out, which wouldn't normally be the case, though I guess we got what we paid for with a $4500 AP1 lol. But you could definitely buy a $10k S2K and make it as fast as ours with another $10k or so in it.
Daily driving an FD for the last 8 years, done a handful of track days, and my first go in an MX-5 genuinely impressed me. I could drive it through some corners faster, not because there was more grip, but because it gives you so much more feedback and confidence.

"She's a tight one, I can barely move my head" @13:10 xD
We love ripping those cup cars in iRacing, such a blast.
I just love the self critisism here. Very honest, great video overall!
This is a badass video, it's awesome that you guys got a hold of a cup car too. The Miata is just such a hard platform to best for that price, that's why I'm building my NA track duty.

Thanks for putting MX-5 in the title.
I like the commentary during your hot laps, helps me understand the car and the track more
Awesome! We try to do a lot of it with cars that don't have open roofs and are too loud lol Otherwise, voice audio sound = muffled.
Some real tire squeal in this video guys. Great stuff!
Damn the cup car is so legit! I want a try.
wow, the noise that cup car makes!! Lush!
You guys have one of the best car-related channel on TH-cam right now. Been following for a long time and I believe better audio quality would benefit the skyrocketing of this channel to the top. Keep up your awesome work, Cheers!

gotta love HPDE and private track days. Racing around in gym shorts. lol. Great video guys!
Lol, they do events at Shannonville in Ontario where I have seen 5 people load into one car without helmets on and the driver was smoking a cigarette while ripping around the track. They let me in in my Miata with no rollbar, at least I had a helmet unlike most of the people there that day!

This was awesome! More videos like this would be great!
I hate that we don't get those Recaro seats in the US!
The fiat 124 gets them in the US it might be possible to order them thorough fiat and swap up to them...
Chase Rayfield Are you sure? I haven't seen them.
We do now.
The Miata is back to its roots, looks like pure fun in both cars, lively for the road one and fast for the cup.
That wall facing you in the last right hander before main straight would scare the ***** out of me though.
Great vid, I'd love to see a miata project but I want to see Grip S14 back to this track and take the revenge over the last time ;)
That wall looks scarier than it is. When you're driving, you really don't even notice it (if you're doing it right).
Great comparison. You all have a great idea. I hope mazda offers some of their miata motorsport parts over the counter.
looks like lots of fun guys, cool driving the cup car!
Just got my patron sticker here in AZ, "10-hp inside!" lmao thanks guys. Stay awesome!
Thanks for the support Brad!
What a fantastic vid. Plus I learned Dave thinks we call him DP because it also happens to be his initials. That's not why.
DP is the master of the DP!
Please do more track videos like these! Love the shootouts between you two!
We'll see you around at TMP forsure! Still a few months left in the season.
I fully support the idea of a project ND Miata! I have a '16 Sport (USA) currently, so it would be very relevant to my interests!
My Favvy episode yet. GO DP! and the Mazdas... what can I say they are my brand.
There is no aero pack in the gray mx-5. The front, side, fender spoilers you show are all standard.
The exhaust on that cup car sounds wonderful.
Duders... your vids keep getting better and better - I ldig it.
Thank you!
Yes please do a project Miata!! Because race car, even though you guys don't even fit in them :D

CS13B 181whp by swapping to 4-2-1 long tube headers and tune.
TNBposse Absolutely no one but GWR has gotten those results. It has not been backed up and is suspect until then.
Very well put together. Keep up the good work 👍
Epic episode, damn!
Awesome comparison. You guys have ripped enough cars around that track now that you definitely need a lap times board on your website. Make it so!
"if mazda made a street car version of this....." I mean, I know what you meant, but still made me laugh!
Both drivers had around 1 second per turn in each braking zone with the cup car.
I love this god damn channel. Thanks guys!
Once again the proof of the Built not Bought concept
The jorts added a few seconds.
i hope you guys are going to do a race cup or something but anyway, good vid as always ☺
You got me with the link on the new video! Lol I had to come check it out. Lol
More videos like this!!!
"DP"? I wonder how they got the name... Must have been some accomplishment...
More track videos like this!
"The sport pack is $4,400 lip kit is $2,200 but it does make the car look a lot more aggressive, and it should make a difference on the track"
That $2,200 is purely a cosmetic upgrade... Any difference felt on track will be placebo effect
You're wallet is lighter which improves performance
He said it had a diferent suspension tune

Mazda actually claims the lip kit has been wind tunnel tested to show aero performance improvements.
Because you're an engineer right Dee Jay?
I had tons of fun riding along via the video! At my age I believe the G forces would make my brains leak out my ears 👂
Months ago, I test drove a Miata, It was fun but I discovered the A/C to be rather anemic on a hot 104🌝 degree day. Seems one cannot have it all as they say...
Love the show guys
12:10 hitting that curb is so satisfying =)
Amazing it can be bought for that price!!! EDIT....Oh the Canadian price is a bit higher, still cool!!
I like this channel...
Braaa that sound!!!!!!
Best youtube Buddies!This 2 fellows:)
MAKE A MIATA TRACK BUILD!!!
PLEEEEAAASE Doo a miata project !!!
Need some subs for Dave's Cup Car lap... no idea what he's saying over that brapberry jam...
And for heaven's sake... it's DAMPING. The car is well-DAMPED. :D
another great episode, when is the next episode coming out for 2jz swap frs? im really excited for that build XD
Very soon! We just shot an update on it.
Holy shit I never thought I'd say this... But that Miata looks mean and sexy AF!
comes with some tims as well nice
:) hah
I'm jealous of you guys! Lol!!! Good driving out there! btw what nikes are those pt?
yesyesyesyes project miataaaaaa!!!!!!
Nice video.
Still love the channel but you guys kill me... Maaazda Miaaata lol
12:25 those overrevs though o_o
No such thing ;)
please do a Mazda mx5 track build like you did FRS
Maybe if Mazda will give us a MX5 then we'll build one!
Build a spec-miata and race it! From street to track sort of series
Love the engine sound from the race car.
How did they made it with such a new engine?
Reminds me of the good old AE86 :-)
Iv'e been building my RX8GT turbo for 5 years and went to the track and two stock 2016 MX-5's were almost keeping up with me ffs. (It was a shake down of a newly built Renesis but still really surprising)
I had a similar experience. Porsche Boxster, race exhaust, no cats, CAI, Eibach racing springs, under drive pulley. Older mx-5's/miata's were keeping up.
ProjectM97 Those Miatas are impressive, considering of the power they make.
I see you are from ontario too. How much does those 2 cars cost @ test, after tax and everything?
Would you guys take the cup car over your project frs? Which do you like better and why?
Looked like your skills as drivers were able to push the street car past it's limits but you couldn't push the race car past it's limits. I say this since the race car laps seemed much smoother and controlled.

Yeah, I presume it's not that easy or cheap.
Dave with the money shifts....
Fav so far!!! :) xx
Awesome vid! Put it head to head with the badass2000!
Nolan Grieb I consider the Miata the first step to getting the s2k
16:54 dave again actin like a fool, peter is a class dude still
damn almost 5 seconds fasterbetween cars. Makes it clear the cup car is legit.
Damn that car is small. If Pete is having problems fitting in it, I can only imagine what would happen if I tried to even sit in it.
The seat is actually adjustable for height, which we didn't realize at the time. With a couple of wrenches we could have lowered it a bunch.
I wish Mazda made a street version of the cup car
LRR used to, unfortunately I don’t think FLIS Performance does.
Good reviews! Is this a Canadian version sport package. (Recaro seats).? We do not get the Recaro seats in California! 🦅🦅🇺🇸
do it Mazda Do It mx5 You have to do IT!!!!
Sounds like you want to build an SCCA solo STR car.
Yes, yes we do!
David Pratte You should! Few local guys built one and they love it. Well all but the tranz issues right now. If you need some parts advice hit my up, I have my own build list notebook lol.
I'm either sticking with my STX classed brz or... something V8 powered lol.

That's a great price for the cup car.
What's with the Mk4 Jetta racecar at 14:52?!
Dunno much about it, but it does have a turbo engine.
how can I get one of your shirts?
You would have a club sport when you do decide to build it.
Now drive the road car with the race cars wheels and tires.
Comparing a car with full race slick to a car with street tires! uuuum wonder which will be faster.............................
Tyres shot at 6:30
What did the stock ASS2000 do? (sorry too lazy to go back and check)
We never really got a true stock lap since our AP1 was beat up and on winter tires, but in a stock AP2 I have done a 1:25 flat at this track.
Damn wish I had those seats smh
How come Pete's timer checkpoint is much different from Dave's. I noticed Dave is right at the end of that pit wall while Pete's is further out...
It's just the way I overlayed the lap timer graphics. The lap timer is set in the same point though.
I figured, I didn't want Pete to be cheated now... lol... great video guys, as always
Club with Brembo bbs option but not appearance package, so that “aero” isn’t real
Is this the track you guys took the s2000 too??
Yessir. Toronto Motorsports Park.
1.26.84? Sounds quick!
So is it safe to say a stock Miata ND is faster than a stock S2k around the track?
It would be very close but we'd say yes.
Speed Academy Wow. Perhaps a new project ND in the future? ;)
“Probably lost a bit of time there”
This guy has absolutely no idea how to drive on a track.
The club car iis the one to go for. which track is this? mosport park?
Our local track called Toronto Motorsports Park.
Cool. I only went on Shannonville (fabi and nelson).
And the BA2K is still faster. Kinda surprised, tbh.
Gray car doesn't have the aero package :)
That's Cayuga TMP!
Yes! Good eye.
Put the S2000 engine in the ND!
car would hall ass with an f20c.
^^^
There are legit turbo and supercharger kits for the stock engine that can give you an extra 50HP without upsetting the balance. That's what I'd go with instead ;)
Wouldve gone faster if he took out the cup holder and user manual
Hmmmm I'll stick with building an s2k rather than the mx-5 cup car, what does DP think?
The S2k's engine is much better but man the MX-5 chassis is superb.
but for over cost to performance I think you're coming out ahead with a built s2k
Ya our S2k cost us about $30k to this point and it is faster than the Cup car, but if you want to go spec racing the MX-5 is great value in a super fun car and a super competitive series.
Yea I hear that, you can also build a pretty decent track s2k with a smaller budget you guys have gone top quality on your parts too
Oh for sure, and a fair bit of our budget was spent on fixing things that were worn out, which wouldn't normally be the case, though I guess we got what we paid for with a $4500 AP1 lol. But you could definitely buy a $10k S2K and make it as fast as ours with another $10k or so in it.
