  • Join Casey Griffiths as he explores the recently purchased Kirtland Ohio temple. We go through several areas that most won't ever see. Casey explains some history of the first temple ceremonies, including practices similar to washing and annointings. He'll then explain the history of Christ's visit to the temple.

According to an entry on the Religious Studies Center website at BYU, the book, “Kirtland, Ohio: A Guide to Family History and Historical Sources,” by Kip Sperry cites a variety of sources to build a consensus as to the specific meanings of the initials or acronyms on the pulpits, as follows:
WEST TIER, MELCHIZEDEK PRIESTHOOD PULPITS (top row to bottom row):
    - M.P.C. Melchizedek Presiding Council (First Presidency of the Church or Stake)
    - P.M.H. Presiding Melchizedek High Priesthood (Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, or Stake High Council)
    - M.H.P. Melchizedek High Priesthood (High Priests Quorum)
    - P.E.M. Presiding (Presidency) Elders Melchizedek (representing Elders Quorum)
EAST TIER, AARONIC PRIESTHOOD PULPITS (top row to bottom row):
    - B.P.A. Bishop Presiding over Aaronic Priesthood
    - P.A.P. Presiding (Presidency) Aaronic Priests
    - P.T.A. Presiding (Presidency) Teachers, Aaronic
    - P.D.A. Presiding (Presidency) Deacons, Aaronic

That building is so unique and significant in our history, it is remarkable that it has endured over time and is in the condition it is. Many, many thanks to our friends at the Community of Christ for taking such phenomenal care of the temple for so long and preserving it prior to the change of ownership.

I toured the temple many years ago as a missionary in Ohio. It will be so exciting to see how the restoration continues. We also owe such huge appreciation to the Community of Christ for maintaining the building so wonderfully. (Our group of missionaries had a fantastic spiritual experience with our guide as she described the area where the Savior appeared: she whispered to us that she was supposed to say that Joseph and Oliver had just had ‘spiritual experiences’ there, but she knew that the Savior had been there!)

Before the temple and other properties fell into the Church's hands for purchase, i knew it would only happen after the Community of Christ's leadership felt its significance was minimal to the organization's own purposes and mission. Couple this with the financial problems the CofC was experiencing, and it was the perfect storm.

Mention of the visitation of Christ and the ancient prophets have more significance to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and are now talked about in a different way than before.

I mean, my question is, why are we wearing ballcaps in a temple? This is place Jesus restored Priesthood keys and appeared..... Resurrected, which doesn't happen really at all anymore, and we're walking into this place like it's just some building. As you walk through the Sacred Grove, they ask you to whisper and show it the reverence and dignity it deserves but in the very building those keys were restored in.... Eh, it's just another building
