My LGS in Mesa were shocked to actually see that we got Set Booster boxes after WEEKS of WOTC telling us we wouldn't be getting any in time for release. This was EXTRA scummy because they had just increased our cost to buy prerelease kits because we "would be getting Set Booster boxes as prize support." Well, we didn't. But the price stayed the same. Thanks WOTC! You always know how to support your players best!
Damn. I work at my LGS, and for our pre release since there wasnt any shipment for set boosters we just gave out draft packs for prizes, with an extra ontop to make up for the whole no set stuff. Can’t believe yalls place upcharged though, we kept it the same

i got a draft box and a set box this go around and literally the most expensive card i pulled was a $28 urborg, tomb of yawgmoth. i'm happy i got the urborg but it's incredibly sad when the set can't even come close to breaking even.
Wotc is in the market of gaining money, not losing it. If every box paid for itself it would be counter intuitive on a business perspective. Expect to lose money, cheer if you beat out the system. These are just scratch tickets you can play a game with. And that's OK.
28$ is what the LGS is asking for. I f you were to sell them that Urborg they would probably give you 15-18$ back. I tend to see "worth" as being what an LGS would give me $ in exchange. More realistic in my opinion than going with the selling price they display on their website/shelves.

@@Personalinfo404 It’s actually not ok, because minors can buy Magic packs, but not scratchers, despite that both technically constitute gambling. They either need to make the value of packs more consistent (less chaff), or stop selling them to individuals under 18. A business should only make a profit if they put out a good product, anyway, and a good business can make a profit and/or product without screwing their customer base. Greed is greed is greed.
@@Personalinfo404 From Wizard's perspective, every box DOES pay for itself. People have to remember, regardless of secondary markets, the cost of production for 15-20 little paper cards is absolutely minuscule, with little to no variants between printing €100 cards and 10c ones. If you're buying a Wizard's product or applying secondary values to their product Wizard's wins, it's really just a matter of how often consumers are rewarded for buying into it.
The borderless lands look really good. Loved the art on the red/blue land. Didn't draft but did a pre-release and it was a lot of fun. Pulled a cultivator collasus, I think there's a lot of good tribal support from this set. I think midnight hunt had more value but vow was more fun to play in sealed at least.
My main take-out from this video: hey, one of my most hyped cards of the set barely costs half a buck! Don't forget: it's probably cheaper to buy every single card you need from the set than to buy a booster box - and a greater percentage of them is going to be of use.
Honestly I'm happy the singles are at a low premium with these recent sets. I'm already a budget Commander builder and this just helps me more in being able to afford new cards for my decks

I had what can only be described as the best luck ever at the Crimson Vow prerelease I went to. Out of my 6 packs, I pulled a cultivator colossus, Toxrill the Corrosive, Faithbound Judge, and Kaya Geist hunter. I pretty easily went undefeated with a nice Orzhov midrange deck.
I bought the Crimson Vow prerelease pack and spent really nice time opening it. As per deck usage, I did not found anything useful or inspiring to create a new deck, but I have so much fun just checking cards and putting them into storage units. You know, the smell, watching ilustrations, checking prices, it is like a ritual for me. If I think, if I spent money properly - no, I could spent it better, buying individual cards or just one Set Booster to silence my addiction. If I think, if this was worth it - yes, it was worth. I had wonderful evening with new cards. I was completely disconnected from my work, private life issues, anxiety etc. About the Crimson Vow per se... I thought it will have more killer cards. For now it is like 5-10 cards that I really like from that set. With the next shopping I will rather buy something from Zendikar again or Midnight Hunt, than from Crimson Vow. I am also thinkig about that Day/Night cycle. I have completely no idea what that does do and how it works, but maybe I will finally sit and read about it, and then maybe buy again something from the newest set.
Sorry Tolarian, but I did this with my set booster box. And I got over 100$ in 10 packs! Maybe just a hot box but still was fun! Top cards were Wedding ring Cultivator colossus Hullbreak horror Sundown pass and Dreamroot cascade Boy did that wedding ring make those packs worth it
Runo was my prerelease promo, and after watching Prof’s earlier video I am very tempted to build him. Anyway I do like this set, and the singles are mostly very affordable which is always nice
Crimson Vow seems to have few/no bum mythics and the rare lands have universal playability, I don't like the value game either but this seems like decent set to tuck away for later.
I'm really surprised to hear the prof say he liked drafting crimson vow. Up until now, my experience has pretty much only been whoever has the biggest and most bombs win. I had way more fun with midnight hunt. Still an awesome set though! Packfull of powerfull cards for many formats.
I built an old Tromokratis deck when I was on a Lovecraft binge back in 2014, with Merfolk as a cultist filler thing. Runo seems like he could just hit the same vibe without filler, which is cool.
That was an awesome 1st box. I'd enjoy drafting or playing Commander with you and the group. Working on my Tovolor Commander, and a separate tiny leaders deck. I can't wait to get some Crimson Vow product for myself.
I think both sets are about the same. Built Liesa from MH, built best slug from CV. Honestly both sets have good long-term value. Just gotta sit on them a while.
i couldn't attend a preselease event but i got a pack to support both my local FLGS and my "totally not an addiction" to cracking open packs. It seems like a really cool set, I love the art style.

Back in Kaldheim it was no draft boxes available, only set. Now the opposite seems to have happened, but not quite as widespread. Mostly I just think the supply chains are still hecked up.
yes i did do prerelease and did 3 2HG events,most of the games i got to cast alchemists gambit and spin the top can take an extra turn win or lose it was fun
Let's be real, with collector pack driving down foil price, it is highly unlikely anyone is ever going to get their money back with draft booster with normal set nowadays.
My family and I were in Vegas, and probably opened 4 boxes total, and we didn’t pull one Olivia, or that green mythic…. And some others. Got like 3 sorins, one foil, 3 Chandra, one alt foil.
Over here in Euroland set booster boxes were released as scheduled. I got one with *45* rares/mythics, and a box value of $175 - counting everything (subtract $10-20 for bulk rares and basics, as like they matter). Only disappointment was that these Belgian made cards don't have the glossy foil legendaries and only weak gloss on the basics. The Plains were even completely gloss-less: misprints? So the verdict is out: Japanese boxes are better!

I had quite a few fun cards for playing with but nothing of particular value. The most expensive one in total was $3.80 or so. And that’s with the 6 or so mythic rares and two plainswalkers I pulled from the box..
Pulled the castlevania sorin and foil Chandra and promo mythic red vamp on prerelease kit…that kit had better value than the box I bought…but had a great time drafting with my wife and kids

I didn't think I would like this set, but my sister bought me a collectors booster for Christmas and I ended up building a new Black/Red vampire deck (I've been using the same Orzhov Vamps for almost three years now), so I personally had a good time with it. It wasn't super impressive, but it wasn't that bad either
My LGS specifically said that they wouldn't receive any set booster boxes until release. Supposedly it was WOTCs way of pushing draft booster boxes. So annoying but I was able to snag one on release.
I feel like this set is a much more fun draft experience, having said that, Midnight Hunt with the decayed zombie tokens and that rotcleave commander deck was great for my Ayara Commander Deck who’s entire point is to spam the board with zombies and ping everyone for 1 life, endless ranks of dead, army of damned, I even bought myself Josu Vess as a single, and even got a copy of The Fallen from the Dark, which is my favourite lore heavy and jank card. “magic often masters those who can’t master it” what a wonderful piece of flavour text. Plus when my friend and I played Midnight Hunt sealed, I got a foil copy of Tainted Adversary, which you better believe went in there as well. I’m sorry, I’m rambling, I’m just really happy with the game right now.
I definitely see what you mean about the art being foiled ruining it a little. I've got a handful of the old border cards, not many, but a couple are foiled. The art isn't foiled and the borders are - really makes the art pop and the whole thing just looks a lot more 3 dimensional.
Before I saw this video I bought one of these. I didn't think it was possible but I wound up with total of around $16. Not counting the $1 cards that would get me closer to around $25
So I am not the only one with upside down cards in their box. I got a draft box on release day and around 20 of the packs contained 2 uncommons packaged upside down. Not a huge deal but just thought it was weird how consistent it was.
I sadly haven't been able to get any cards from this set or play with any cards from this set yet. I've been busy with school and homework, but I've been most busy on Fridays and weekends :(

There is always good money in land. Land is usually a good investment not only in magic but in life.
Yeah, the full art lands will always hold value into the future. Foils will probably hit $2-3 eventually down the road.
I just cant part with them, they are by far my favorite basic lands

I feel like the basic lands of this set should have been included, 30+ non-foil basics could sell for $10 easily, even more for foils.

I honestly would have been happier opening the second box. The land cycle in this set is good and will likely climb in value over time.

The Crimson Vow portion of my Set box was pretty average, but I managed to pull a Vampiric Tutor and a Cavern of Souls from the List so yay for luck.
Hullbreacher horror reminds me of my favorite time playing magic with pearl lake ancient control. So thumbs up for that I guess with CV.

In my set Box i found one booster with cultivator colossus, sorin in alternate Art and cemetery gateceeper in alternate Art foil
No box topper should be an uncommon.... ever!

Crimson vow was my first pre release
My LGS specifically said that they wouldn't receive any set booster boxes until release. Supposedly it was WOTCs way of pushing draft booster boxes. So annoying but I was able to snag one on release.
I feel like this set is a much more fun draft experience, having said that, Midnight Hunt with the decayed zombie tokens and that rotcleave commander deck was great for my Ayara Commander Deck who’s entire point is to spam the board with zombies and ping everyone for 1 life, endless ranks of dead, army of damned, I even bought myself Josu Vess as a single, and even got a copy of The Fallen from the Dark, which is my favourite lore heavy and jank card. “magic often masters those who can’t master it” what a wonderful piece of flavour text. Plus when my friend and I played Midnight Hunt sealed, I got a foil copy of Tainted Adversary, which you better believe went in there as well. I’m sorry, I’m rambling, I’m just really happy with the game right now.

I definitely see what you mean about the art being foiled ruining it a little. I've got a handful of the old border cards, not many, but a couple are foiled. The art isn't foiled and the borders are - really makes the art pop and the whole thing just looks a lot more 3 dimensional.
Love this series. Always fun to watch. Probably too expensive, but wouldnt mind seeing some of the collector booster versions for some of these sets.
Before I saw this video I bought one of these. I didn't think it was possible but I wound up with total of around $16. Not counting the $1 cards that would get me closer to around $25
Not as bad as opening a set booster box of Mindnight Hunt with five out of six Commander rares being from the 50 cent Visions cycle.
I typically buy a box to support my LGS and then I just buy singles afterwards if I didn’t get the cards I wanted.
So I am not the only one with upside down cards in their box. I got a draft box on release day and around 20 of the packs contained 2 uncommons packaged upside down. Not a huge deal but just thought it was weird how consistent it was.
I sadly haven't been able to get any cards from this set or play with any cards from this set yet. I've been busy with school and homework, but I've been most busy on Fridays and weekends :(
On prerelease I pulled a card that was $60… and then watched as it dropped to like $8 over then next week :’(
I got a Sorin the mirthless (Ayami Kojima version), overcharged amalgam,geralf and a thalia in a bundle (old fat pack). Not bad!
managed to get about 200 worth from my set booster from rares and mythics alone. got all the chase ones in one box so im a very happy camper

I’ve enjoyed both sets more than I thought I would, just wish human tribal wasn’t so strong though.
