  • The MiSTer FPGA project is an amazing way to experience lag-free recreations of classic consoles and arcade boards, lag-free, on both modern and analog displays. This video shows how a took a new product called the MiSTerCade and interfaced the MiSTer into a real arcade machine. It was a lot of fun and I hope you all enjoy watching the progress!

    This looks like a fun project! I did a mod of an Arcade1up cab a few months ago that involved changing out all of the controls and integrating a PC build, and this looks somewhat similar in scope with a couple of extra aspects to consider. I'm just now starting to look at MiSTer more lately, and this vid made me even more interested in hopping onboard.

    I really wish you had made a more in-depth video on the installation. I have this same exact cabinet, and I have absolutely no clue how to go about installing a new arcade power supply. I have the newer MiSTerCade that has the 5v jumper letting me use the cabinet power supply. The problem I'm having is that the video output looks wrong. Everything looks fine with the board that came with the cabinet; but when I install the MiSTerCade, the colors look blown out, like as if the contrast is too high. I noticed that the chassis has spot for a contrast adjustment, but the potentiometer is missing. I wish I knew how you got yours to look right. I've been pulling out my hair trying to figure this out!

  • @MisterScientific
    @MisterScientific 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Quick question. You mentioned you would like to have a cabinet for each orientation for 3 total. I assume 4:3, rotated 3:4, but what is the other orientation referred to? The taller displays that games like Donkey Kong and Pac-Man run on? What are those displays/ratio called? Also, were there ever any pre-HD era 16:9 arcade cabs? I feel like there would be some, but can't think of any off the top of my head.

    • @RetroRGB
      @RetroRGB  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's just TATE/vertical orientation flipped the other way. Many games have an option to flip, so it's not totally necessary, but I'd like one for each orientation anyway :)

    • @MisterScientific
      @MisterScientific 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RetroRGB Thanks! So just for clarity. The aspect ratios/orientations:

    • @RetroRGB
      @RetroRGB  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a combination of the CRT's controls and the fact that each core will output slightly different video (same with swapping different arcade boards). Cabs with external controls usually have H&V centering, so this isn't a problem with those. This cab has the H&V controls buried, so I just leave it alone - It's close enough that it doesn't bother me.

    I don't know if you will see this. But, how did you wire the Meanwell into the cab? My guess is the original mains goes into the MW power supply then piggybacks to the deflection board. The alternative is you split the mains where it comes into the cab and routed it to both the MW PSU and defection board? Your wiring is out of site and hard to duplicated. Any input would be appreciated.

    • @RetroRGB
      @RetroRGB  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the original chassis has it's own PSU, so I just spliced the AC input - One to the original chassis and the other to the meanwell for the arcade boards.
      Replacing the chassis with a better one and using a better meanwell for the whole thing would better though. You'd just have to find a chassis to match the CRT.

    • @grafxgear
      @grafxgear ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RetroRGB Thank you so much. I already did a full recap of the chassis with a few upgrades. Increasing c561 to a 220uf x 250v helped with most of my blooming issues. c451 is timing critical and shouldn't be modified, but replacing it with an exact match fixed my fold-over issues. It's a cheap tube / chassis and I spent WAY too much on high quality caps than it is worth... but the results are fine. I ran into the exact same issue in that I can't fill the bottom of the screen no mater what I adjust. When I'm more motivated I'll replace the whole tube / chassis. In the meantime I got the same MW PSU as you, I just wasn't sure where to wire it in. Now to hit up Porkchop Express.

    Hi ! I'm always hyped by your videos. They contain good quality and a ton of tech info.
    I'd like to have your opinion on a subject that is vastly talked about among hardware defenders compared to FPGA or RPI.
    It's about INPUT LAG. Some of these people say that these devices (even hooked to a CRT) produces Input Lag because of the USB controller's nature and because of software based emulation structure. They also say that the best game to test the lag is Punch Out on Nes and they cant finish the game on RPi because of that.
    What is your personal thought about it based on your experience ? Thanks a lot !

      I have two of these mini arcade machines and both came like that. Not sure if they're "legit", but it wasn't my choice.

      Yes, but pickup only - I won't ship it. What's your offer?

      @@RetroRGB can we discuss the offer away from TH-cam comments Bob?

    Seems a lot more wieldy than my idea of using arcade motheborads with flashcarts by Darksoft/Apocalypse.
    Those new harnesses look robust as all get out.

    Not really sure why you went to such lengths to avoid enlarging / adding a hole on the back, given you happily drilled larger holes all over the front panels. Using your hole saw on the back would have allowed for USB-A and full-size HDMI. You could even fit flush mount USB hub (there's ones that fit circular holes).

    • @RetroRGB

      Simple: The holes drilled in front will be used with MiSTerCade, real arcade machines, Raspberry Pi...pretty much everything I can think of will use them, so if I ever put the MiSTerCade in a different machine and turn this into, say, a PGM box, I'll still use them. Alternatively, cutting a hole for HDMI and USB is ONLY something I'd use with an emulation solution, so I didn't want it to be permanant.
