I'm Galician and I struggle if its south of Oporto. If not, I understand them since they sound like they are actually speaking with a Gallician accent lol
But Brazilian is way easier for us in general, even tho there are some slangs we do not know what they mean at all

Yeah. You're right. Most brazilians have a hard time understanding the "tugas". I have some exposure to European Portuguese due to the Internet and I can understand mostly of the mainland accents (apart from some very specific slangs and regionalisms) and I also have a decent understanding of Madeira's accent. São Miguel's not easy for me though. But, the average brazilian will struggle to understand even the more standard accents of Portugal.
JP, I've watched some videos of people speaking Galician and I could understand it quite decently, although there were quite some words, slangs that I didn't know. For my ears, Galician sounds more close to the Brazilian Portuguese or vice-versa than it does to European Portuguese.
As a portuguese speaker, the hardest part in learning spanish is getting rid of the "portuñol", because both languages are so similar you will often mix it up

I like how three out of them are spanish speakers and yet their countries have their own words and expressions and the other sometimes don't understand
I guess it depends on how much you expose yourself to other latino dialects, in my case I understand all the slang of latin countries from chile to mexico, even a lot of brazilian ones
It's kinda like that with Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese
There are two more famous words that exist in both languages but have different meanings. The word "moço" or "moça" should be used to refer to a young person, but in Brazil we use it more freely, and it doesn't always matter to us if the person is actually young, but in Portugal i heard they find it to be extremely weird to call someone that if they're not actually young.
Another word that in portugal has kind of the same meaning as "moça" is "rapariga," a word used to refer to young women or girls, but in Brazil that word does not have a positive meaning... in Brazil that's one of the words that means "prostitute" or "mistress."
not really, I'm not sure why the Peruvian girl had more trouble understanding other latino countries, but if you're exposed to all latino culture, you'll understand most usual language (used in the video).

As a native Italian speaker, I understand written Portuguese enough to get the gist of a story, but it's definitely harder when spoken. Spanish is less challenging for sure.
Spanish and Italian are pretty similar in the pronunciation skills, portuguese is 89% similar to Spanish when it is write but we the Spanish speakers can understand when it’s write, when it’s spoke it’s pretty hard cause it’s really different instead of Italian cause it’s really similar in pronunciation
In some cases, Portuguese and Italian are more similar, though Italian is still overall closer to Spanish than it is to Portuguese. For example, when the Brazilian girl said filho (son), in Italian it would be understood immediately, as it literally has the same pronunciation as figlio. Meanwhile, in Spanish, it is hijo. If you notice, one thing about Spanish is that it lost the F sound and replaced it for an H in some words like horno (forno), humo (fumo/fumaça), hoja (foglio/folha), hacer (fare/fazer), higo (fico/figo), harina (farina/farinha), halcón (falco/falcão), hierro (ferro). Regardless, I think Spanish speakers can still get a gist of what each word means, as we still use the verb fumar to refer to smoke, follaje for foliage, and fierro is still used to refer to the metal, while hierro is specifically used when talking about nutrition and referring to the element. I think the biggest difference between Italian and Portuguese is the pronunciation. It is the same with Spanish and Portuguese, as the pronunciations are very different, but unlike Italian, we have an advantage, because Portuguese and Spanish are both Ibero-Romance languages, sharing even more vocabulary and grammar than with Italian, which is closer to French in that case.

I was stopped at TSA during a layover in São Paulo from Buenos Aires to New York, and the TSA agent kept saying to me "tesoura," while making the scissors sign and pointing at my luggage. My 10 year old ass was so confused. I didn't know if he wanted to play rock, papers, scissors with me, or he was suspecting me of hiding a treasure (tesoro) in my luggage. It took me legit a whole minute to realize tesoura meant tijera (scissors) and not tesoro (treasure). Lol.

When I met some spanish women at my work ( they asked where the bathroom is) and I also don't understand almost anything what they said, before that I thought it was easy to understand Spanish, but it's not easy.

French/French Creole speaking countries and territories are also considered part of Latin America.
Haiti is Latin America too
To refer to the countries that speak Spanish we say "Hispanoamérica" or Hispanic America. Without Brazil, however, there would be Latin America because there are territories where people speak French.

As an American who also speaks Spanish & is learning Brazilian Portuguese, this was so interesting even though my brain was going back and forth between 3 languages deciphering words & phrases (especially unfamiliar slang from other countries).

@@Vengurl09 Yeah, but the accents & way they certain words in different Spanish-speaking regions/countries as well as the slang threw me off. Like my mom & her family are from Bolivia & when the Peruvian said “palta” I knew it was “avocado” since it’s also said like that there, but most Spanish-speaking nations say it “aguacate” (which I’m more used to hearing in the US). And I obviously had no idea it was also Peruvian slang for “embarrassing”. Just like Chile, Bolivia, Argentina, & Uruguay say “frutilla” for strawberry but most Spanish speaking countries say “fresa” & let’s pretend in Argentina & Uruguay its slang for “flirting” I’d have to first translate from English in my head the info I already explained as well as figure out how they’re using the word to mean in a sentence while also figuring out what they’re saying since they pronounce the “ll” like the English “sh” while most countries pronounce it like “y”. So if they say “I’m strawberry-ing with the pretty lady in the bar.” “Estoy frutilla-ando con la mujer bonita en el bar.” I have to 1) translate to English in my head. 2) decipher their accent making frutilla (fruit-tee-yah) sound like fruit-tee-shah 3) know that they’re using a regional word for strawberry that most countries don’t use 4) guess what “strawberrying” means in their slang by this context and sentence.

I guess it depends of the person and if they have interacted with other people from Latin America. I also understood the word boliche I feel those people representing Latin America were a bit more sheltered it's not hard to get some words based on context either. My point is that it seemed a bit funny pretending they were speaking a different language when they all were speaking Spanish lol

Acho que o maior problema de entendimento entre o Brasil e países latino-americanos que usam o espanhol como linguagem é a velocidade de fala. Tenho alguns parentes argentinos e conseguimos nos entender perfeitamente quando eles falam espanhol devagar ou o famoso "portunhol", mas quando eles falam rápido, parece até que estão falando árabe rsrsrsrsrs. Inclusive outra linguagem que temos certa facilidade de entender, apesar de mais difícil, é o italiano.
O que acho engraçado é que muitas pessoas (principalmente norte-americanos) não conseguem diferenciar o português do espanhol, inclusive muitos estadunidenses já vieram falar comigo em espanhol, pensando que era minha língua.
E eu ouvindo japones e coreano,tenho a mesma sensação. Pra mim,todos estão falando chinês 🤪

I'm Brazilian and got mad when I was in Buenos Aires and NOBODY could understand me, although I understood almost everything and had weeklys meetings with Spanishs from Madrid. I really thought they were "de sacanagem" with me...kkk. Talking to an Argentine friend (that speaks portuguese very well) he explained me how some almost imperceptible pronunciations makes difference and that it was plausible that no one understood my OBELISCO pronunciations. Too many adventures out there...

What I found most frustrating living abroad and seeing lots of latin people that brazilians (being the biggest country in South america) more often learn Spanish so spanish speakers include them in conversation. I have not met ONE latin person from South America trying to learn Portugese even if half of their friends are brazilians. That is my experience.
I'm Brazilian and I don't know anyone who can speak Spanish fluently where I live. Most people prefer to learn English instead. Spanish is a language not much learned in Brazil because we already understand it enough.

It's true. That's why I don't make even the slightest effort to speak any Spanish and if they approach me speaking that language, I'll simply speak Portuguese which is my native language. Brazil is the #1 economic power of all South America, so Portuguese should've been the most proeminent language in this continent.
Well, it might be because there are 9 countries that speak Spanish around Brazil. And I see y’all are complaining about why we don’t learn Portuguese, while y’all are speaking and writing in English. And there’s only one country in South America that speak in English so; looks like y’all prefer to speak in English other than learn Spanish so, we don’t feel like we have to Lear Portuguese. And I have seen a lot of people from Brazil who go on vacation to Spanish-speaking countries, compared to Spanish-speaking people who go to visit Brazil.

We Brazilians can understand almost everything in spanish. If we decide to attend spanish classes usually they tell us to skip the basics and go straight to the intermediate level.

This video is great to show people from outside latin america what is quite obvious here, portuguese is a harder language in terms of pronunciation(thanks to all nasal sounds) and grammar, because of that portuguese speakers understands spanish speakers pretty well if they speak slowly and without slangs, but the other way around is much harder.

I normally struggle to understand Spanish, despite being Brazilian. The issue is that Spanish speakers go through the phonetics faster. If they intentionally speak slower then yes.
Sou britânico, filho de um expatriado brasileiro e estudante de português, apesar da proximidade linguística com o português, não consigo entender nada em espanhol, muito menos falar, mas compreendo perfeitamente tanto o português brasileiro quanto o português falado em Portugal, quando criança estudei em um colégio onde era ministrado aulas em inglês e português lusitano mas em casa meu pai sempre fez questão que eu aprendesse o português falado no Brasil mas com minha mãe a conversa era sempre e tão somente em inglês

-You need to add a few consonant sounds that don't exist in Spanish such as Z ad in Zebra, V as in Love, a soft "j" sound like some English speakers say "garaGE" (also like in French), Xs and CHs that sound like "sh", etc

-change many strong R sounds for "h" sound as in house
And so on. These tips can help.

Eu fui para a Argentina, nunca fui tão mimada na vida 🥺💕💓 e o português tem muita coisa parecida com o espanhol argentino. Também tem palavras que pegamos de lá ou compartilhamos.
A pronúncia do LL argentino é similar ao CH brasileiro. Então palavras como "chegamos/llegamos/", "Chamamos/llamamos" tem a mesma pronúncia (não em toda a Argentina, mas em Buenos Aires por exemplo)
Eu acho que o português brasileiro se parece muito com o espanhol da região de Buenos Aires.

It happened to me but when i went to Brazil, we were very young and my sister almost ripped her finger out with a pool light (😭) my family and i went to the hospital AND THEY TREATED US SO NICELY.
My mom was in shock of how kind they were, they treated my sister like a queen.

Soy mexicana y mientras vivía en la frontera de Brasil con Argentina, los brasileños entendían el español más fácilmente, sin embargo cuando vivía en ciudades más al interior del estado de Paraná y de São Paulo, los brasileños no entendían mucho (casi nada y a veces nada) el español.
Supongo que es dependiendo del ambiente en dónde la gente esté desenvolviéndose, trabajo, profesión, región en dónde vivan, etc.

In southern Brazil, exactly in Rio Grande do Sul state, we use the word "bolicho" to refer some place where we can go and have a drink. It happens because the Spanish influence in our Brazilian southern culture.

As a native Spanish speaker from the Canary Islands, Europe, I understand Portuguese quite easily. I understand more Portuguese from Brazil than Portuguese from Portugal because in Portugal they use many more nasal sounds and a distinctive "r" sound similar to French. The way Portuguese from Portugal sounds is more beautiful to my ears though but I like Brazilian Portuguese too.
If I pay attention to Portuguese speakers regardless of where they are from and they speak slowly I can understand around 90%-95% of what they're saying. If they speak fast it's difficult to understand them. Portuguese speakers can understand almost everything in Spanish if we don't speak very fast.
If I read a text in Portuguese then I also understand almost everything.
Spanish speakers and Portuguese speakers are always like siblings. We get along really well especially while living abroad because we have a similar lifestyle.

I prefer Brazilian Portuguese over the European one, but I remember watching a clip of the 2015 live animated version of Cinderella dubbed in European Portuguese, and the evil stepmom's voice actress was phenomenal. She had a darkness and maturity to her voice, kinda contralto deep and hoarse, almost like she smokes 10 packs of cigarettes per day. That villainous serpentine voice of her was so captivating and intimidating. It also helped that she was Cate Blanchett, 'cause who don't want a sophisticated milf.
Isso é verdade. Muitos brasileiros também não entendem muitos dos sotaques falados em Portugal. Mas, no meu ponto de vista, depende muito da exposição. Eu consumo conteúdo de Portugal já faz um tempo e não vejo problema em entender o português europeu embora sempre acabemos trompando com termos, gírias e expressões que não conhecemos, mas, no geral, dá para entender pelo contexto.
Já os sotaques falado nas ilhas são mais difíceis de perceber. Das ilhas, o menos difícil de perceber, para mim, é o falado na Madeira. O acento de São Miguel é trabalhoso para entender. 😅
The R in Brazil is pronounced 4 different ways depending on the region, as in French, as an H, as in English and rolling it like in Spanish.

@@joaqueen3498 After a quick search on the Net you're right. I thought it was the opposite. I'm not an expert in pointing out the linguistic differences between both Portuguese accents. I just know some like for instance, there are more 'sh' sounds for s in Portugal than in Brazil which is more 'ss' and the vowels are pronounced more closed in Portugal. Maybe I'm wrong again. Haha. But I still find Portuguese from Portugal more beautiful to my ears and also more challenging to learn. That's just my personal opinion and preference. But I must say both of the accents sound really good.
Mostly, in any accent from portuguese and spanish, people who have the portuguese as their mother language, are most able to understand spanish speakers, than the oposite.
And the reason is pretty simple, actually. All the phonems from spanish exist in portuguese, but not the oposite way.

Soy brasileña y viví en Venezuela por 5 años, desde los 10 años de edad. Estudié en un colegio internacional americano, así que también aprendí inglés y un poco de francés. Para mi ha sido un privilegio aprender con los venezolanos porque me parece un acento super chevere. Ahora trabajo con personas de toda latinoamerica y aprendo las palabras más locales de casa país. Me encanta esta mezcla. Cuándo hablo español la gente no se da cuenta que soy brasileira, siempre dicen que tengo un acento neutro..jajaja. Saber los idiomas portugués, inglés y español me facilitó mucho entender francés y italiano, aunque me falte confianza para hablarlos.

As an Argentinean from Buenos Aires, I feel the Latinos closest to us are Uruguayans, then Southern Brazilians from Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and Paraná, then Paraguayans, then Chileans, and the rest are just more foreign, though we get exposed to a lot of Bolivians and Peruvians as well. We share that gaucho culture of eating a good asado or churrasco, sharing a nice hot mate or chimarrão (Paraguayans are more into their cold tereré), obsession for football, and the huge European immigration affected our pedigree and day to day lifestyle.

I am Italian-Brazilian and I learned to speak Italian almost simultaneously with Portuguese. Spanish I don't speak (just some basic expressions), but I understand 90% (or more) easily.

For us brazilians, the spanish language without the slangs, sounds basically our older portuguese. So its pretty easy when they talk with us especially slowly. Y me encanta el idioma. ♥

Trabalhei em uma empresa que tinha uma filial na Argentina.
Essa filial era bem próxima da fronteira do Brasil, quando ligávamos para eles os Argentinos entendiam o que falávamos, acho que o motivo é o convívio com os brasileiros.

Sim, mas depende da pessoa. Eu tenho muito contato com idiomas, portanto consigo me comunicar e entender suficientemente bem para conversar com um falante de espanhol. No entanto, brasileiros que nunca tiveram contato com o espanhol vão ter sim certa dificuldade para entendê-lo. Vou usar minha mãe como exemplo: ela entende muitíssimo menos que qualquer outro brasileiro(a) que tenha tido pelo menos um pouco de exposição ao espanhol.
Ahn não, é pq o idioma português tem TODOS os sons que tem o idioma espanhol , o contrário não acontece, o espanhol não tem os sons nasais que o português tem nem os de vogais abertas e fechadas e/é por exemplo ou lh/nh, aliás nem o inglês tem esses sons deixando o português foneticamente falando com semelhanças com o francês e o occitano .

Actually, "to miss" means "sentir falta" in Portuguese. "Saudade" is a mix of feelings like losing something, distance from somebody and love. It comes from the latin word "solitatem" (loneliness). So, if you want to translate ''saudade'' to spanish/english, it's better to say 'soledad/loneliness'.

I feel Peru's accent is the most different from the other ones (The ones who speaks Spanish)
O falante português, ou melhor dizendo o brasileiro tem muita facilidade em aprender praticamente qualquer língua. A gente fala uma língua que compartilha muita coisa do latim, por isso entendemos até que como certa facilidade o espanhol de várias regiões do mundo, também temos muita facilidade em aprender línguas saxônicas ou anglo-saxônicas por conta do nosso fonema, várias palavras que nós usamos no dia a dia acabam tendo a mesma técnica de fala que palavras em inglês. A gente também tem facilidade em aprender línguas indígenas também, até por que uma boa parte dos brasileiros tem descendência indígena. O nosso problema vem quando se trata de línguas africanas que tem muitos dialetos e línguas asiáticas. A gente já teve que aprender uma língua extremamente difícil que é o português, por isso quando aprendemos inglês, francês, espanhol, italiano ou qualquer língua diferente fica muito mais fácil.

Peru’s Spanish is not only one accent they have a lot (coast , highland , jungle , etc)
they both are the hardest spanish accents for me.

O sotaque peruano é o mais destacado de diferenciado entre os de espanhol, deve ser tão diferente quanto brasil é pro resto dos países que falam português que são mais próximos ao sotaque de portugal
O sotaque argentino é um dos mais específicos ..especialmente o porteño.
Na verdade o sotaque peruano é bastante simples para os brasileiros entenderem, tanto ll quanto y são pronunciados com som de i (generalizando). Essa moça do vídeo deve morar há bastante tempo na Coreia do Sul e perdeu um pouco do sotaque nativo, até o inglês dela tem sotaque coreano.
Essa moça certamente é do interior do Peru. Pq entre os hispanohablantes é praticamente unânime em afirmar que o sotaque de Lima (Peru) é o sotaque mais neutro de todos, incluindo Espanha. Tem até um vídeo bem repercutido aí no TH-cam sobre isso

Não é kkkk o argentino que é o mais diferenciado dos 3 que estão aí... Sotaque peruano só aparenta ser diferente neste video por causa dela que tem o sotaque do espanhol que convive com outras línguas nativas da região, mas para nós hispânicos isso é normal e o espanhol diferenciado é aquele diferente do resto (argentino e castelhano da espanha).

O português brasileiro é muito rico em sonoridade. Sem falar na sua estrutura gramatical maleável. Por ter essa riqueza sonora, e gramatica maleável, é possível entender perfeitamente o espanhol. Bom, pelo menos eu consigo entender 95% do que eles falam, mesmo falando rápido. E se falarem lentamente, eu entendo 100%.
Nós temos 12 sons vocais, então em tese é mais fácil entende-los
Por exemplo, o espanhol só apresenta 5 sons vocais:
A (aberto) como em Cubá - Cuba , nós temos o A (aberto) de Lá, pá, Macapá, temos o A fechado com maior ou menor intensidade como em Carâ (cara) ou Búfâlâ (búfala), temos o A nasal de Rã, Mão e Mães.
O espanhol só tem o E (fechado) como em Mêdico (médico), temos o E (fechado) em você ou aberto em Pé.
O Espanhol tem o som do I, que eu não sei se aberto ou fechado, mas somente um assim como no português, como em dia .
O espanhol tem o O (fechado) como em gatô (gato), o português tem o O (fechado) em avô ou aberto em avó, além do nasal em Põe.
Por fim o som do U, que tbm não.sei se aberto ou fechado, ambas línguas tbm só tem um som como em Uva.
Traduzindo o que vc queria dizer, o falante de português teria maior facilidade de aprender espanhol, já que temos mais sons fonéticos e consonantais, porém pela velocidade e pouca familiaridade com a fonética hispânica, achamos que eles é que conseguem nos entender. Quando verdade é bem o contrário.

Em São Paulo "birra" era usado, (e as vezes,raramente,ainda é) para se referir à breja.

Aconteceu isso comigo kkkkk sou do nordeste e trabalhei no ano de 2010 em Aguas de Chapecó na empresa Camargo correia lá era uma torre de babel de sotaques todo sotaque do brasil tinha lá na primeira semana me colocaram com um senhor do Rio grande do sul eu passei duas semana para entender ele direito tudo eu perguntava " o quê?' kkkkkkk
