Thank you Roger for showing me the history of the State that as a kid I thought was very boring. You have made me want to go out and explore more that this wonderful State has to show.

The thrill of finding things has never left me, but it had little to do with the history taught in school, and mostly about two parents that loved Indiana. I grew up with the Empire L8mestone pit in my "backyard" and was the first quarry I explored as a kid. Between that, the creeks, caves, and wildlife. I am a Hoosier born and raised. Thank you for highlighting our beautiful state! I don't think it is so much the water as it is the environment that is refreshing!

Lol.. 😂😂😂 My Grandpa Thomas Jefferson Hall made moonshine for years in southwest Indiana.. Mt. Vernon to Evansville and over to Kentucky! My dad Bob Hall and his brother Alvin Hall both helped deliver the corn liquor in their car.. and the revenuers used to chase them all the time.. this was back in the 20's and 30's... I'm a Indiana born country gal myself.. though I have not lived there for ... well we left in 1960 and daddy got stationed at Ft Bliss Texas.. but I remember when we lived back home.. and I have some real kool memories of my young childhood with my dad.. ❤❤

100%. Many people visit, and are too busy with an agenda, to soak in the peace and slower pace. Some are actually uncomfortable in it, believe it or not! I knew one lady from Chicago, that came down for business. She was genuinely uneasy without the comfort of buildings and crowds. I’ve been to Chicago, and feel uneasy because of all the noise and congestion! Southern Indiana is where the peace is!
I live in southern Indiana and drive through all these areas for work. You have really given me a lot of information that I had no clue about! Thanks for all you do!!

Excellent work as always, Roger. I've done a little reading about some old salt wells in Crawford County, Indiana. These were in the Mifflin area, but more so in the vicinity of Hemlock Cliffs and Messamore Cliffs. It is documented, that back in the 1800's, many barrels of salt were produced daily from the wells in that area. Then, of course, there's the town of Sulphur not too far away, where a sulphur well and sulphur springs are located. Interestingly enough, Bill Messamore, the notorious bank robber and former inmate at Alcatraz Island (also likely responsible for the 1949 disappearance of the Vandiver family), would almost always park his car at the bottom of a hill known as Saltwell Hill. Somewhat strangely, he would park the car very close to the home of Gerald Hughes (a young man during those years) who has been interviewed on occasion and tells of Mr. Messamore's mysterious ways. Bill would then simply walk up onto the promontory where his home and small farm were located, instead of driving the dirt road leading up the hill, which was undoubtedly at times too muddy for the passage of automobiles. Anyways, the unique natural beauty and history of that area are pretty intriguing to me. Thanks for another great video. Looking forward to the next one!
I’m thinking about doing a Messamore Cliffs / Arrowhead Arch video, later this year. There’s some very cool history and legends to be told! I’ve driven through Sulphur, numerous times, but only know about the once popular White Sulphur Well, and that ancient artifacts might have been found in a nearby cave. Though I did a Crawford County highlight video, there’s still many hidden gems!

Love these videos about good ole Indiana, love the things that I learned about my home state that I never even knew!😮 It's so funny the whole first part of this video I was thinking the exact same thing that was Roger said at the end, these people knew how to live right. Work hard, rest well, eat well, live off the land and not the drive-through's and the freezer section. Get outside and enjoy nature and turn off the phones and TVs. I was born in the wrong era 😉
There’s many things that modern medicine can’t fix, but time in the country can! I love going somewhere so remote that you can hear a car from miles away, or nothing but nature, all day long. When I was a little kid, I wanted to live in the woods, off the grid, before that was even a term. My Mother told me, “I lived on the east side of Indianapolis as a kid. Our family moved to rural southern Indiana, when I was a teenager. We lived like pioneers: no electricity or running water. We had lanterns, a fireplace, and got all of our water from the spring. Bathroom was an outhouse, in all kinds of weather. All clothes had to be scrubbed out on a board and rinsed in a bucket. I’ll take modern, any day of the week!” 😀
Keith went to college there at West Baden when it was Northwood Institute. Such great history there! Squire Boone cave is one of our favorites. Been to that Fairground spring many times.
Growing up, the broadcasters I heard on tv and radio, made the world seem like a safer, more peaceful place. Hopefully, I can bring some of that back in each video. 🙂
Michigan hired Tim Allen to promote and do the television commercials for tourism in Michigan. Indiana should do that with you Roger. You have sold me on southern Indiana.
Martinsville had mineral springs. When i was little our Dr office was at the Home Lawn Sanatarium. I would get sick just going there. Later found out I'm allergic to the sulfa. 😳
That Trinity Springs is incredibly strong, I felt sick just standing there for 15 minutes, recovered quickly after I got to fresher air. One of my friends only soaked their feet in the water, said it helped a painful ankle, but it made them sick three days!

Thank you Roger for another amazing video about our great region. I was born, raised and grew up in Orange County and am a lifelong resident of Southern Indiana. I absolutely love our local history and natural wonders. I visited Trinity Springs a few years ago and was surprised to find a VERY large (Olympic size)in ground pool that was long abandoned. I was told by the man I was with that it was the first of it's kind in our nation. Does anyone have any information about this?

A very interesting video Roger! It seems mineral water has been a fad for people for a long time. Many (all?) states have one or more springs that were or are considered to have medicinal properties. I have personally visited some in Kentucky, Arkansas, Missouri, and Illinois. I have heard about, and watched videos, of the New Baden area, but haven't visited there yet. As I said, this is a very interesting topic, and I was glad to see your video on the subject. Thanks for your work to educate and entertain people while showcasing some of Southern Indiana's treasures.
Like I was telling someone last night, West Baden, and French Lick resorts, are right next door to each other, and you can park at one, and take a free shuttle to the other. I even took the little trolley, seen in the video. Truly beautiful buildings, and they decorate vividly at Christmas.
I’d drove through it, and heard about Martinsville, where they still have a neon mineral spring sign, and Mudlavia. But I didn’t have anything to film at the three. There are so many that were big for a time but are completely gone.
It has always been my belief that everything we need to be healthy and even happy was provided to us by God and it's all around us in nature..sadly mankind has destroyed most of it or hidden the truth about natural healing due to greed..can you imagine how good water tasted before the industrial age..another great video Roger!
Probably the best tasting water you can imagine. I remember being in the country as a teenager, and drinking water, right out of a spring. Over 40 years later, there is no way I’d try it!
My folks were big on Indiana road trips, and I love getting out there on a nice day. I know southern and central Indiana really well, northern Indiana reasonably well. Hoping to do more travel up north, as there’s some places I’ve NEVER seen!
@@AdventureswithRoger I Love to adventure too . I’ve mostly been around southwest , southern indiana but love history PERIOD. There’s something about limestone cliffs and creeks that make me feel like I had a past life or make me feel like I want to time travel back to horse and buggy times . Shakamac state park used to have pow wows I went to every year but they don’t have them anymore. I’d love to find another place that does have them . But I really REALLY enjoy your videos Roger I will be a fan as long as you do them .
@@RobHowell1 Rockport and Rockville both have annual pow wows, I attended the one at Rockport. Still good-sized crowds! The Indiana Miami Nation headquarters is up at Peru, in an old high school building. I’ve not heard if they have pow wows, or just have them at Rockville.
There used to be a spring close to me in Cartersburg in Hendricks County that was called Magnetic Springs. A lot of people used to go to it back in the day but it has since dried up. With all the homes and farms around it now, I don't think I would drink from it now. Thanks for sharing
I wouldn’t try it! Some of the once wonderful springs will outright kill a person. The water table been drained too low, and most of us don’t have a system to tolerate it. Even 30 years ago, Mom told me about using bleach to purify a well that was sketchy.
@@buckshoth585 A friend of mine and I hiked Shades, back in 1997. I remember coming across an old airfield. At the time, seems like someone said it was still in use.
It's really a shame that humans have polluted such a beautiful gift. Our ancestors had the opportunity to drink great mineral water. We now get our filtered city water from 7-11 in polluting plastic bottles. 🤮

The hydrogen sulfide at Trinity Springs was so strong, that I became physically ill, just breathing the fumes, until I got back to fresh air. And I was only there 15 minutes or so. Can only imagine a drink of the stuff! A friend of mine soaked their foot in the spring, and said it really did relieve the chronic pain, but they were then sick for three days afterward!
@@AdventureswithRoger I was in Rome in 2008 and I couldn't resist taking a drink from the great Aquaduct. It tasted great. Had some nice green moss lining it, so I figured it would help clean it. Never bothered me any.
Thanks, Edward! During the height of the pandemic, I visited West Baden one night. There were no guests, and it was both Incredibly beautiful and quiet. However, the stench of the mineral spring was stronger than I’d ever experienced, in all my visits.
One thing I have herd was thst some people they had arsenic in their walpaper coloring. When they went to these spas they got away from the arsenic laden house and the fresh air made them feel better aswell.
Keterston Family Cemetery was originally located near the top of Bobby Hall Spring. It was relocated to Patoka Memorial Cemetery in the 1970s. You can still tell where the original burials are located.

There's a history of Artesian well water in Martinsville Indiana. To come from afar to bathe in the Artesian water because they thought it had healing properties as well.
I wrestled with making the long trip to Martinsville, just to film the neon sign. Was hoping to find old pictures of their old resorts, but couldn’t find any.

Hey there! I briefly covered Hindostan Falls in “The Lost City of Palestine”, as one of the towns wiped out by “ague”, likely malaria. The old story was that they disturbed a large burial mound, and stirred up a disease. You’ve probably heard the legend about gold hidden under the falls themselves, in tiny caves. It all fascinates me! I spent a bunch of time at Shoals and the surrounding areas. It one of my favorite places, and not well known outside Southern Indiana.

As a born and raised Hoosier I have never heard of this fountain of youth. I also didn't know that back then people suffered with chronic constipation a lot either 😂💩 I've heard lots of stories of people getting explosive diarrhea, though. Not fun either way. 🥴😵💫 The Native people lived here for 1000s of years and didn't trash up and dirty up that fountain of youth until people from across the pond came over and began terrorizing nature destroying it. 😶
As I travelled to these springs, the thing that kept coming back to me, was how you used to be able to drink straight out of any of them. There is so much groundwater contamination today, that you’d be taking a risk! My one friend can vouch for the mineral spring laxative effect. I’d heard it was good for aching feet and ankles, so we went to Trinity Springs, even brought a jug to take some home. Well my friend waded through it and remarked that their ankles really were feeling better, in just the hour we were there: a miracle. They never once drank any of it, just a soak. Came home and they had diarrhea for three days straight! That’s some mighty powerful stuff! 😂
@AdventureswithRoger I guess I best not go there until I stock up on toilet paper!😆 I used to work at a nursing home for years. Some of the old people talked about drinking bottled mineral water at times for a variety of reasons. I refused t5o touch the stuff.
@@AdventureswithRoger there's a small amount of ruins left. I've been out there. There's steps & parts of upstairs still remaining. I from Indiana but had never heard of this place until about 10 years. I find it especially interesting that a lot of our bottled water comes from the original spring.

I’d say it was a little bit of both. Some springs have lithium to give you a bit of a high, others have actual antibacterial properties, and Native Americans used them to soak wounds to heal faster. But just the idea that, “these waters will make me well”, has a powerful psychological effect. I know that whenever I think about a fun trip, and all the things I’ll get to see and do, I start to feel better: just like medicine! 🙂
@@StevenSchoolAlchemy The one where I mentioned the smell was Trinity Springs. The last time I visited, it was so strong that it made me ill. As soon as I got fresh air, away from the spring, I felt better. It’s some pretty powerful stuff!
Many legends had their basis in trip funding and / or the prospect of material gain. I’ve heard some say that the fountain of youth was a relatively modern addition to the Ponce de Leon story, as it pertains to Florida. A story I’ve been developing, is about how Europeans claimed ancient migrations to the Americas, to try an establish ownership. Some out-of-place artifacts, found in the 17th through 19th centuries, might have been planted on purpose. At Louisville and Clarksville, there are old stories of Welsh breastplates and armor, found during excavations. Supposedly, they were sent to either Thomas Jefferson, the Smithsonian, or both! But that’s the fun of folklore!
If you go to the original fountain of youth in Florida you’ll find it is the stinkiest smelliest and most awful tasting Sulfur water you will ever drink. Nothing youthful about it. I enjoy your channel.
Trinity Springs made me sick, just to breathe it. It was like all the gas settled in that valley. Once I got out of the valley, and to fresh air, I felt better! 🙂
Great videos! Definitely fires up the urge to go down the road to the nearest natural wonder. Unfortunately you’re right about not drinking it on a dare. We rank first in the country as having the most polluted streams and rivers…ugh…pesticides, fertilizers, herbicides, industrial waste and fossil fuel detritus. 🤨
Yeah I wanted to emphasis that getting a drink, at most of these, is not a good idea! One of my friends simply soaked their feet at Trinity Springs, and was sick for three days! But what a temptation, to take a drink and be young again! 🙂

I’d drove through it, and heard about Martinsville, where they still have a neon mineral spring sign, and Mudlavia. But I didn’t have anything to film at the three. There are so many that were big for a time but are completely gone.

It has always been my belief that everything we need to be healthy and even happy was provided to us by God and it's all around us in nature..sadly mankind has destroyed most of it or hidden the truth about natural healing due to greed..can you imagine how good water tasted before the industrial age..another great video Roger!
Probably the best tasting water you can imagine. I remember being in the country as a teenager, and drinking water, right out of a spring. Over 40 years later, there is no way I’d try it!

My folks were big on Indiana road trips, and I love getting out there on a nice day. I know southern and central Indiana really well, northern Indiana reasonably well. Hoping to do more travel up north, as there’s some places I’ve NEVER seen!

There’s something about limestone cliffs and creeks that make me feel like I had a past life or make me feel like I want to time travel back to horse and buggy times .
Shakamac state park used to have pow wows I went to every year but they don’t have them anymore. I’d love to find another place that does have them .

@@RobHowell1 Rockport and Rockville both have annual pow wows, I attended the one at Rockport. Still good-sized crowds! The Indiana Miami Nation headquarters is up at Peru, in an old high school building. I’ve not heard if they have pow wows, or just have them at Rockville.
There used to be a spring close to me in Cartersburg in Hendricks County that was called Magnetic Springs. A lot of people used to go to it back in the day but it has since dried up. With all the homes and farms around it now, I don't think I would drink from it now. Thanks for sharing
I wouldn’t try it! Some of the once wonderful springs will outright kill a person. The water table been drained too low, and most of us don’t have a system to tolerate it. Even 30 years ago, Mom told me about using bleach to purify a well that was sketchy.

@@buckshoth585 A friend of mine and I hiked Shades, back in 1997. I remember coming across an old airfield. At the time, seems like someone said it was still in use.
It's really a shame that humans have polluted such a beautiful gift. Our ancestors had the opportunity to drink great mineral water. We now get our filtered city water from 7-11 in polluting plastic bottles. 🤮

The hydrogen sulfide at Trinity Springs was so strong, that I became physically ill, just breathing the fumes, until I got back to fresh air. And I was only there 15 minutes or so. Can only imagine a drink of the stuff! A friend of mine soaked their foot in the spring, and said it really did relieve the chronic pain, but they were then sick for three days afterward!
@@AdventureswithRoger I was in Rome in 2008 and I couldn't resist taking a drink from the great Aquaduct. It tasted great. Had some nice green moss lining it, so I figured it would help clean it. Never bothered me any.

Thanks, Edward! During the height of the pandemic, I visited West Baden one night. There were no guests, and it was both Incredibly beautiful and quiet. However, the stench of the mineral spring was stronger than I’d ever experienced, in all my visits.

One thing I have herd was thst some people they had arsenic in their walpaper coloring. When they went to these spas they got away from the arsenic laden house and the fresh air made them feel better aswell.
Now that’s something I’d never heard before! Makes total sense.
Keterston Family Cemetery was originally located near the top of Bobby Hall Spring. It was relocated to Patoka Memorial Cemetery in the 1970s. You can still tell where the original burials are located.
I saw people walking up there, but didn’t follow them. Looked like a mighty steep climb!

There's a history of Artesian well water in Martinsville Indiana. To come from afar to bathe in the Artesian water because they thought it had healing properties as well.
I wrestled with making the long trip to Martinsville, just to film the neon sign. Was hoping to find old pictures of their old resorts, but couldn’t find any.

Hey there! I briefly covered Hindostan Falls in “The Lost City of Palestine”, as one of the towns wiped out by “ague”, likely malaria. The old story was that they disturbed a large burial mound, and stirred up a disease. You’ve probably heard the legend about gold hidden under the falls themselves, in tiny caves. It all fascinates me!
I spent a bunch of time at Shoals and the surrounding areas. It one of my favorite places, and not well known outside Southern Indiana.

Ha! A few friends of mine visited St Augustine, and the Fountain of Youth Park, a few months ago. They look the same though! 😀
As a born and raised Hoosier I have never heard of this fountain of youth. I also didn't know that back then people suffered with chronic constipation a lot either 😂💩
I've heard lots of stories of people getting explosive diarrhea, though. Not fun either way. 🥴😵💫
The Native people lived here for 1000s of years and didn't trash up and dirty up that fountain of youth until people from across the pond came over and began terrorizing nature destroying it. 😶
As I travelled to these springs, the thing that kept coming back to me, was how you used to be able to drink straight out of any of them. There is so much groundwater contamination today, that you’d be taking a risk!
My one friend can vouch for the mineral spring laxative effect. I’d heard it was good for aching feet and ankles, so we went to Trinity Springs, even brought a jug to take some home. Well my friend waded through it and remarked that their ankles really were feeling better, in just the hour we were there: a miracle. They never once drank any of it, just a soak. Came home and they had diarrhea for three days straight! That’s some mighty powerful stuff! 😂

I used to work at a nursing home for years. Some of the old people talked about drinking bottled mineral water at times for a variety of reasons. I refused t5o touch the stuff.

@@AdventureswithRoger there's a small amount of ruins left. I've been out there. There's steps & parts of upstairs still remaining. I from Indiana but had never heard of this place until about 10 years. I find it especially interesting that a lot of our bottled water comes from the original spring.

I’d say it was a little bit of both. Some springs have lithium to give you a bit of a high, others have actual antibacterial properties, and Native Americans used them to soak wounds to heal faster. But just the idea that, “these waters will make me well”, has a powerful psychological effect. I know that whenever I think about a fun trip, and all the things I’ll get to see and do, I start to feel better: just like medicine! 🙂

Ponce de Leon was not looking for a fountain of youth. That's as much a myth as the fountain of youth itself. Anyway, thanks for sharing your story
Many legends had their basis in trip funding and / or the prospect of material gain. I’ve heard some say that the fountain of youth was a relatively modern addition to the Ponce de Leon story, as it pertains to Florida.
A story I’ve been developing, is about how Europeans claimed ancient migrations to the Americas, to try an establish ownership. Some out-of-place artifacts, found in the 17th through 19th centuries, might have been planted on purpose. At Louisville and Clarksville, there are old stories of Welsh breastplates and armor, found during excavations. Supposedly, they were sent to either Thomas Jefferson, the Smithsonian, or both! But that’s the fun of folklore!

If you go to the original fountain of youth in Florida you’ll find it is the stinkiest smelliest and most awful tasting Sulfur water you will ever drink. Nothing youthful about it. I enjoy your channel.
Trinity Springs made me sick, just to breathe it. It was like all the gas settled in that valley. Once I got out of the valley, and to fresh air, I felt better! 🙂

Great videos! Definitely fires up the urge to go down the road to the nearest natural wonder. Unfortunately you’re right about not drinking it on a dare. We rank first in the country as having the most polluted streams and rivers…ugh…pesticides, fertilizers, herbicides, industrial waste and fossil fuel detritus. 🤨
Yeah I wanted to emphasis that getting a drink, at most of these, is not a good idea! One of my friends simply soaked their feet at Trinity Springs, and was sick for three days! But what a temptation, to take a drink and be young again! 🙂
