Indiana Caverns: The Longest Cave in Indiana (Corydon, Indiana)

  • Imagine going underground, and being able to travel over 40 miles! Indiana caverns, located at Corydon Indiana, has over 40 miles of known passages, and the end has yet to be found! It’s not only the longest cave, recorded in Indiana history, but the 11th largest in the entire United States.
    Not only is the cave large, it also contains ice age bones, from many now extinct animals, that once entered into the cave. But as an absolute highlight, the cave also provides adventurers with a motorized boat tour, along a river, deep inside the earth. It is truly an adventure!

      My pleasure, Glynn! One summer, when I was about 10 years old, Dad took us to every single showcave in Indiana, Mammoth in Kentucky, and Meramec in Missouri. They all have something unique, they aren’t the same. However, Indiana Caverns brings many things together, really well. It’s very well thought out. Indiana Caverns wasn’t developed for tourists, when Dad was alive, but I’m sure we would have visited if it was. 🙂

      I tell people in central Indiana, “If you don’t know if you like caves, Indiana Caverns is the best place to start.” They provide a movie at the start, that’s a great primer. Dramatic hallway opening to a wonderland of exotic things: waterfall, cave formations, ice age bones, exciting corridors, and an underground boat ride. Indiana Caverns has done so many things right. Such an interesting place! Several decades ago, when the studio was near the creek, I visited with my Mother. She loved watching them blow and form the glass, and thought several pieces were beautiful. I told her I’d buy them, but she thought it was too frivolous, as she was a very frugal single Mom. She had to be after Dad died at 46. I went back the next day, bought them for Christmas. She was so incredibly surprised when she opened them, almost to tears. That is the cave I fell 35 feet and damaged my back. I had to walk out or die. There was no way where we were for any rescue. We had belly crawled about 500 yards. Found another opening but it was to small to get out of. It's now on that map. About 50 yards straight up. That is where I fell. When we did it again the next year we had climbing gear. It was real fun doing a belly crawl with all the darn equipment. No space for back packs so you had to tie it to a foot and drag it. I will never forget it. But that time I stayed at the bottom. • @AdventureswithRoger
      @AdventureswithRoger  ปีที่แล้ว

      A few years ago, maybe 10 plus, “white nose syndrome” started killing Indianas rare bat species. Conservationists determined that spelunkers might be carrying the contamination from cave to cave, so “closed” all the state caves. At Cave River Valley, they actually put bars on Endless Cave, a huge haven for the Indiana Brown Bat. Cavers were instructed to thoroughly wash their clothing between caves, or change into other attire, so they wouldn’t spread white nose syndrome any further. It seemed to have worked, but Wyandotte was closed once again this year, as another rare bat species was found there. They wanted to make sure there were no further issues, and the two caves may open up this spring, if all is well.

      Have you thought about doing drone footage for your own channel? One guy I know has done footage of the old Bedford, Indiana quarries, places that are often gated and you can’t get there. Very cool stuff. I’ve never seen anyone take a drone down the center of Hemlock Cliffs, fly through the arch at Taswell, or hover above the Wesley Chapel Gulf during a flood. That could be you, and I’d definitely watch it! 🙂
