    Eligibility criteria is a widely debated topic within international rugby. Currently there are rules surrounding players representing multiple countries. If you play for one nation you must meet residency requirements and stand down periods to play for another Nation. With professional leagues in Europe which attract players from many nations, some of those international players choose to play for their adopted nations rather than the nation of their birth. NZ has many very good players that never make the ABs who take playing contracts in the lucrative European competitions and end up playing for the Nations where they apply their trade. Its fair enough as its very competitive to be selected in the All Blacks. Those players would automatically become ineligible for selection in the NZ National team. NZRU has their own condition alongside the internationally accepted criteria where they will not consider any player for selection if they have played international Rugby for any other Nation.

    EXTRA TIME
    When the clock hits 80mins, the game does not stop until next stoppage of play.
    So here, Scotland held possession of the ball and kept it live by doing "Pick and Run" Phases, inching closer to the Goal Line. As long as Scotland does not concede a penalty, its a mission to the try line. If USA concedes a penalty -because Scotland has the ball, they would have advantage. Scotland would've most likely went with a Scrum or back to the "Pick and Run" with a quick Tap to restart. If at anytime Scotland concedes a penalty or looses the ball out of bounds, the Game stops. If USA get possession of the ball, it is expected to kick the ball out of bounds to stop the game -otherwise, if they feeling bold or boastful, continue play for another attempt at getting a try.

    USA eagles are a good team, they should try to field a team for Super Rugby Comp featuring teams from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina and Japan. A USA team would be a great addition to the comp and they could definitely hold their own against a lot of the teams in the comp!
    Cheers from Australia!

    Scotland isn't a rugby minnow like the USA. For the USA this is absolutely huge. Although Scotland have never beaten the NZ All Blacks, they have come close on a few occasions. Scotland are top tier. Well done USA. Remember Japan beat the Spring Bok's at the 2015 RWC. Nobody saw that coming.

    Penalty Try
    It's not a 'how close' thing.
    If the ref determines that, except for the penalty, a try would have been scored he may award the try. No matter how far out.
    I've seen one awarded 40m out.
    In making that determination the offender is 'erased'. There is no 'if he had not offended he could have prevented it legally', he is erased from the picture entirely.

    @KG89345 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    the us team is actually pretty good for a 2nd tier nation and can compete with the likes of scotland or italy at the moment, which is pretty amazing for a country that doesn't give a f... for rugby.

  • @rocketrabble6737

    A penalty try is awarded if the referee rules that a try would have been scored but for a penalty offence committed to prevent it. Until recently when one was awarded the conversion kick was taken from directly in front of the the posts but now seven points is awarded without having to take a conversion.

    Eligibility is determined by several things.
    Parents- At least one grandparent
    Residence- 5 years
    Citizenship
    Any one will do. Playing for a nation confirms you to that nation.
    I believe I've already explained penalty tries.
    How close you are is meaningless. I've seen penalty tries awarded 40M out.
    What it is, is if the referee determines that if not for the penalty a try would have been scored, he may award the try.
    To make that determination the offending players existence is erased. He/she is not there and able to do something else (legal).
    That's not a ruck. That is a maul.
    A ruck is what happens after a tackle. The ball is on the ground.
    A maul requires a ball carrier, a defender and a someone supporting the ball carrier. The ball is held. It's actually illegal to collapse a maul but doing so has become less likely to be penalized as going off your feet in a ruck.
    To really understand what forward play is I'd suggest you watch some older rugby. Back in the day we had rucks that actually moved and mauling could be devastating. They actually had quick scrums that never collapsed back then too.
    Check out the '73 match between NZ and the Barbarians in Cardiff Arms Park. It was named the Game of the Century. If you watch it you will see the try that comes if you type "That Try" in your TH-cam search bar. Here's the match

    Mauls and rucks are where all the complexity of union compared to league comes from. Most of the penalties that league fans complain about come from these areas of the game and they're quite technical and open to interpretation. Pretty hard to explain but basically when a ball carrier goes into contact if he stays on his feet its a maul and if he goes to ground its a ruck. Both are opportunities for the defence to contest for possession but in very different ways. The maul is a pretty powerful offensive weapon off a lineout because all the forwards are right there to bind and push and if its well formed its very hard to stop close to the line.

    There are hundreds of Rugby nomads that have lived and played in other countries for a minimum of 5 years (I think). Lots of Kiwis in Japan and the UK, lots of Pacific Islanders in NZ, Aussie and the UK, a few South Africans in the UK too.. So they find teams in more need, who will often pay good money for talent.

    To qualify to play for a country you must either have a grandparent or parent from that country or have lived there for (I think) 3 years... it used to be less but am sure it has been increased. Also you must not have played for another countries Adult First team or B team. If the country has no B team then that countries under 20's side counts as their B team.

  • @clutchxgene8477
    @clutchxgene8477 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    eligibility rules in rugby are quite stupid as if you live in a country for 4 years you can play for them which means teams such as tonga and Samoa have their best players playing for other nations. It also sees New Zealand, South Africa, Australia players who can't make their own sides try and make it in a different country. Also if you have a parent who's born in a country or wherever you were born you can play for that side which sees players such as Hoskins Sotutu be eligible for 3 countries New Zealand the country he was born in and lived all his life, Fiji the country his Dads from and England the country his Mums from. But once you have made the decision to play for a country and have played at least one game for the country you can't play for another country. These eligibility rules result in the highest quality of international rugby but it does seem a bit weird that you can live in a different country for 4 years and be able to play for their national team without even gaining citizenship.

    Scotland's formation from the line out was a maul (a whole set of laws around this come into play). A maul happens when it hasn't gone to ground and a player from both teams binds to the ball carrier (excluding the ball carrier). If it goes to ground before forming a maul, it is a tackle, over which a ruck can be formed (there is another set of laws around this).
    And yes there are residency laws; basically you have to have not represented another country and have resided in your adopted country for 3 years (end of this year that changes to 5 years). You can also be eligible by parents and/or grandparents but you still have to have not played for another country (there is a loophole to this via playing 7s at the Olympics).

    This game shows you that when the USA has their strongest team they aren't that bad (although they lost to Uraguay). In this most recent game against the All Blacks, all of the USA's players who play overseas aka their best players such as AJ Macginty, Ruben De Haas and Joe Taufete'e couldn't play as their clubs wanted them back.

  • @lastpenny849
    @lastpenny849 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's not always about the distance from the try line, more about whether the ball carrier would have scored without the foul play interference. There needs to be cover for him to award a penalty. The formation where the bunch rumbles forward is called a maul. Tricky rules in there, but generally you have to stay bound to the maul and it has to stay on it's feet. If the defensive team pulls down the maul, it's a penalty, sometimes a penalty try too.

    This was a Scottish B/C team, most of those players were new, young and inexperienced players or what would of been seen as a B or C team for Scotland, who at this point a few years ago weren't regarded very highly in the 6 nations or world rugby. But fair play to the US for narrowly beating a team that are better than them, I would put it down to individual members like AJ McGinty and others who play for high level clubs win England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Not to take anything away from you, but we=hen you pointed out the Scottish try in " "extra time", firstly it wasn't, it was last play, we don't have extra time in rugby, and secondly Scotland had more point scoring opportunities which they worked for and had every right to score but individuals made mistakes, so I am just pointing out that this game could of been out of grasp for the US, but luckily for you, mistakes were made and not all the Scottish opportunities were capitalised on. Well done though.

    Nice. Actually I felt good not being Scottish.
    In comparison a rugby ball is way softer light and bouncier than a football ball yes. But it's way bigger. , I had the opportunity to play "flag football" (not sure about the term, it was more than 20 years ago) in lycée what i could compare to college in France, the ball felt very hard small and "rocky"....I feel like kicking a football ball can be painful if done wrong idk, never did.
    I hope to see a Antoine Dupont reaction soon or later man;)
