I think this came out great; had I only seen the model in person without watching these videos I'd have never guessed it used to be a toy. Personally I think 100% accuracy, especially when it comes to subjects like this, is a fallacy; the studio models tend to have so much variation between movies and photos, some of which I assume is because when ILM was creating them they were a combination of scratch building and cannibalizing parts from so many different kits. I'd say that, like most model kits based on Star Wars ships, yours is most definitely "in the spirit" as far as details go; your skill and passion really came through in the process of creating details that, in most cases, weren't even there on the kit/toy and that's what really matters.
I enjoyed seeing your progress on this conversion. Of particular interest, this build and ones similar have really shown me what pastels can do for the Falcon, but your added step of coming back and treating edges with drybrushed metalizer really sets things off! That is a very convincing technique and is used to great effect here. Thanks for sharing your work.
I have actually just bought this Falcon on ebay and came on to youtube to see if anyone had a review on it so I could gain a closer look at what I had bought.Your Falcon looks beautiful and if I had the know how I'd convert mine also but I will be happy with just putting the stickers on and deciding whether to hang it from the ceiling or find a nice shelf position for it.Once again congratulations on your achievement.
This is the best bang for your buck when it comes to a semi studio scale model. I made one up a few years ago because i didnt want to drop the money on a MR Falcon. Then the Deago falcon came out and I used the Hasbro falcon as a painting test mule. Ended up giving it up to a neighbors kid who was blown away.....little did he know the fully lit deago was in the next room.
Very nice work! I agree with the person who commented below though, it would've been nice to have had a more zoomed out view at the end to have got a better look at the Falcon as a whole.
Looks great close-up, you need to show some more distant shots so we can see the whole thing, especially from the rear with your awesome lighting on the engines
Hello,I just purchased the 2 foot millennium falcon from ebay.if people send you the Hasbro millennium falcon, just like the one you weatherd and painted..Do you have time to complete their order? If so,what is the price? If not,do you have a video on how to complete the weathering and lights installation, step by step? Thank you.
Nothing special actually, these were pastels sets from Aaron Brothers, which is no longer in business. You'd be fine with a generic pastel set from any craft store like Michaels. For the Falcon, they were grounded into a fine powder by rubbing them against sand paper then drybrushed. You can also try using powdered pigments but pastels are cheaper in cost. Thanks for the compliment. The model is still displayed in my TV room and has held up well throughout the years.
your welcome! I just took my kids to the Children Museum yesterday and saw a very nice model of a Millennium Falcon and I thought of yours! Yours could have been on a museum display!
I’m doing Hasbro Falcon. Just finished the landing gear. Did you paint the whole ship, or just add pastels? I LOVE how the color came out on the colored panel. I’ve often though about using gold/silver leaf for some of the piping.
The whole ship was painted followed by the panel painting and detailing. That would be an interesting choice for the pipes but bear in mind a lot of the ship is pretty grungy. Not sure how much of the nice sheen from the leaf paper would be obscured or lost.
Which Millennium Falcon did you start with? I've got one that holds regular action figures, got in the 90's I think. I'm just learning that people are customizing these
Hi....this one was a special edition Falcon that Walmart sold 6 yrs ago. One of the reasons it apparently didn't sell that great was because you couldn't fit figures inside. it literally is just an empty shell it's just that a lot of the exterior details weren't bad so people saw the potential of customizing it. Yours is definitely different. You can still occasionally find these on eBay although the cost is a lot higher. Just search for Hasbro 2015 Millennium Falcon. Hope that helps, thanks for watching
xHARBYNGERx It's called Sculpting a Galaxy by Lorne Peterson. Here's the link to amazon: www.amazon.com/Sculpting-Galaxy-Inside-Star-Model/dp/1933784032/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1434407623&sr=8-1&keywords=sculpting+a+galaxy
thanks....it's been over 3 yrs since I posted this video and the Falcon is holding up well. Happy to note all of the painting and detailing is looking just as good as it did when I completed it. I'm displaying the model away from direct sunlight and keeping it dusted and clean.
So, 5 years on, how is the Falcon holding up! I'm about to start the adventure with my hunk of junk and was curious on what adhesive you used. I talked to Randy Cooper and he still says hot glue is a good choice as long as you scuff up the Polypropylene first.
It’s really held up. I have it displayed in my family room away from the sun. I dont recall needing much hot glue except to hold LED wires down. I would say hot glue is good but any parts that really need good support you might want to consider 2 part epoxy. Although it hasn’t happened here, other projects that I’ve used hot glue on haven’t held up well. I dont use hot glue very often these days. Thanks for watching. Send pics of your completed Falcon. Would be great to see it. I also agree with scuffing up the polypropylene.
The panels were scratch built. You can refer to Part 2 of this series which details how they were made. The lights were purchased off Ebay; 5mm flickering cool white LEDs.
I have quick question. I'm in the final stretch of my Falcon and have a ton of electronics under the hood. What did you do to apply your side panels knowing that you might have to get back under the hood? I'm considering magnets for most of it, but wanted to get your thoughts. By the way, you've been a great inspiration. Thank you for sharing your work and you progress.
+Ken Pearson Thanks Ken.....I glued all the side panels but used the original screws to hold the model together when I re-assembled it. The side panels don't interfere with taking it back apart again. I did use some glue along the rear because I mistakenly removed the center screw. If I need to take the two halves apart, I'd have to just break that seal along the back. I hope that helps and thanks again for your compliment.
+Kalea C-Way Hi...and thanks for your kind compliments. Thank you also for inquiring but no I don't do commission work. This is just a hobby I enjoy doing and hope to provide useful info with these videos. Secondly, I didn't do a finished interior because of the costs involved. Although there are a number of 3D printed parts available to do so, it would run $140.00+ just for the cockpit cabin. With the additional costs of the photoetch set and 3D printed nose cone, it was just beyond my budget to add an interior. Thanks for watching.
This was a photoetch kit offered by a guy named Randy Cooper a few years ago. I'm pretty sure it's no longer available. Go to monstersinmotion.com and search for millennium falcon upgrade kit. You will find they sell parts to add to this particular toy. I don't know if that includes a grill for the engine. Thanks for watching
I used a photoetched part for the diffuser so whatever height they were is how they turned out. They could be a little taller than the original, not sure.
@@InterstellarModeler Thank u for the response.. And yes the defusers on the Legacy and the Smugglers run are much shorter than the original Falcon . I am glad u noticed the “Flaw” and fixed it.
Sorry but no I dont sell these. This was a one time only project. I'm afraid These toys are no longer available for sale at Walmart either. You can still find a few on Ebay but they now run $100+. Thanks for your kind compliment and for watching.
Hello Friend. very good work. what kind of shape is it? Hasbro is? which is on sale in shops or just a model made by you? congratulations on your work.
+juan manuel garcia muñoz Hi Juan....if by shape you're asking about accuracy??? It's not going to be completely screen accurate but the detailing is fairly good. As for availability, I'm afraid it's no longer on the market. This was an exclusive for Walmart in 2014. You can still find them on Ebay but the price has gone back up to $100+. Hope that helps and thank you for watching and your kind compliments.
So awesome!!! I wish someone would offer a Falcon like this for those people like me that have zero model building skills, painting, & electrical skills.
Hi, I followed your lead and tried one of my own. Primed it. Painted it. But when I masked it with painter's tape - to add the spot colours, all the base pain pealed right off. Any suggestions?
What exactly are you applying to weather the ship? You mentioned that you are using "pastels", but I am not familiar with what the product is. I'm guessing its not pastel paint?
+Gruumsh Orc Warlord Sorry for the late reply. Pastels are made of powdered pigment and a binder and you use them as an art media to apply color. They look like sticks of chalk and you can find them at any arts and craft store. For weathering I mainly use black and dark browns. I take the sticks and rub them onto sand paper grinding it into a powder. Using a brush you can then apply it onto your model surface and create a weathered/worn/charred appearance. BTW you can also buy pigments that are already ground (by Vallejo) which work fine. A couple advantages of pastels. First you can buy a set pretty cheap. Ones by Alphacolor are often less than $10.00. Secondly you end up with a variety of shades vs just the one color in a bottle of pigment. Google Alphacolor Pastel set and you'll see what I mean. Hope that helps.
+TheAcademicHorse There's actually enough tension that it stays in place without any glue. Just apply gentle pressure as you slide the cone on. I left it that way. Although I don't anticipate the need to, this allows me a way to unscrew the two halves in case I needed to access the lighting for any reason. Hope that helps.
intelestellar modeler i want to ask you something but have in mind that i´m from a country where we speak spanish.... in the first seconds of this video you put something whit a dry brush in the millenium falcon and you said something like pastels, i whant to know what is this so see if i can buy it in my country or order via internet. thanks a lot for answer and may the force be whit you
Hi buddy.. the name of the prep for the modle plastic.. is called.. plaste cote adhesion premoter..made by.Dupont..after washing. the modle in warm water with Dawn liquid soap.and lightly scrub the parts, after completely drying then use 600 grit sandpaper and sand the plastic removing the factory Sheen and deposits.. and then the plastic will be ready for the plastic coat adhesion promoter.. spirit a nice coat over all of the parts and then dry with a portable little hair dryer gun. and your paint peeling problem when masking will be taken care of and you will not have that problem anymore on any model you prep with the plastic coat adhesion promoter after you apply the promoter then apply your primer Oh whichever color you wish depending on what your building. and after that your final paint..
+EMMETT ROWE Used that adhesion promoter on a mountain bike. Covered any bare metal with it and used a clear red paint to get an anodized look to the exposed metal surfaces. That primer is dynamite.
I've used adhesion promoter, too. Not sure which kind but it's definitely a must for plastic. You can't just paint plastic and expect the paint to stay on! The other thing, and this will slip by some people, is that you want to make sure your paint is paint made SPECIFICALLY for plastic! It's a big deal because not all the stuff sold in spray paint cans is formulated for plastic. A fair amount is metal or wood only!
I hear you on the weathering, jobs like that can be hypnotically enjoyable. Overall I think you turned a cheap looking thing that was still great because nostalgia into a great looking model. I think I like most the long streaks of damage that taper off to a point. Something really realistic looking about those bits. I would nudge you towards considering to one day do that cockpit though. The Plastic window stands out a bit against the realism elsewhere. Maybe you'll get the itch to do that one day. It seems crazy that should be expensive being such a small bit of plastic. I wonder what the cost would be to adapt a 3D model of the many that are out there online to a 3D printable form using as little material as possible, so all hollow and then have that printed out from a 3D printing service online.
+Clay Mann Thanks Clay. Thanks for your kind words and for watching. I actually left the cockpit cone unglued to the hull for that very reason. I'd love to do such a thing but again the main drawback is cost. 3D printed items are pretty pricey....just the cockpit (seats and instruments) runs about $55 and the back wall another $42.50. As cool as it would look, spending $100 just to outfit the cockpit is hard for me to do especially when so many other kits are coming out. But hey...ya never know. Thanks again.
+Interstellar Modeler Oh my gosh I had no idea it would be that much. These are not the 3D printed parts you are looking for :) If I ever get a 3D printer and I've been considering it for about a year now but still haven't pulled the trigger. I'll message you and happily print out that model for nothing. I'm pretty reasonable with 3D modeling. I recreated the opening sequence to Star Wars in a 3D animation that's in sync with the real thing. i won't link it here because that's a bit spammy but its on ma channel. Keep up the great work, its a blast to watch.
+Clay Mann Hey thanks Clay! That would be awesome! Yeah check out Shapways website and search Hasbro Millennium Falcon and you'll see a whole host of additional parts. You'll quickly see what I mean. Combine those with Randy Coope's detailing photoetch kit and one could easily run up to $500 if you decided to outfit your Falcon with every piece. I'll check out your channel. Thanks again.
Hi....I'm afraid the grill is no longer available from the source I purchased it from. Your best bet for any upgrades would probably be this kit from monsters in motion. I would check out this link: www.monstersinmotion.com/cart/star-wars-item-list-i-z-c-11_198/star-wars-30-hasbro-millennium-falcon-panel-upgrade-kit-p-25136
+KIMRAN SUPAAT If you're inquiring about the Falcon itself, it's not a kit but a Hasbro Toy from December of 2014 and no longer produced. Your best bet now would be ebay. If you're referring to pieces to modify the toy you can search for them on Starshipmodeler.
A few words of constructive criticism. All the streaks you painted in seem to be emanating from the center of the ship outwards. I would think that you would have put them streaking away from the direction of travel. Think of it moving through the atmosphere and the oil etc streaking along the hull towards the rear..
Are you referring to the black styrene for the cockpit? Best thing to do is to test it on paper first. You have to cut it in an arc like shape so that it can fit into the cone. The front piece was cut into a circle. Once you have the appropriate patterns on paper, you can use that as template to cut out the a duplicate using clear styrene plastic (that I painted black). Hope that helps
Hi. This really isnt a model but rather a Hasbto toy that was mainly available at Walmart about 7yrs ago. I had seen a number if people painting and converting them at the time which inspired me to try the same. You can probably still find them here and there but much more expensive than the $20 I paid for it when Walmart had them on clearance. If you’re interested on building a Falcon there are a number of options including the Perfect Grade from Bandai. Hope that helps
Hi...luckily there is a solution for you. There is an upgrade kit available for a reasonable price from Monsters In Motion. I've not personally seen it but if I were doing a conversion, i would order this for sure. nice f'ing work dude. I never had the patience for model making, but I give mad respect to anybody how does, especially for something so cool.

It reminds me of an old pick-up truck with replacement pieces from the junk yard.
It makes sense for the Falcon.

Los pasteles son un medio de arte que se asemeja a la tiza . Se puede moler en un polvo y un cepillo en su modelo para crear una apariencia desgastada .Usted lo puede encontrar en Amazon.

Hi buddy.. the name of the prep for the modle plastic.. is called.. plaste cote adhesion premoter..made by.Dupont..after washing. the modle in warm water with Dawn liquid soap.and lightly scrub the parts, after completely drying then use 600 grit sandpaper and sand the plastic removing the factory Sheen and deposits.. and then the plastic will be ready for the plastic coat adhesion promoter.. spirit a nice coat over all of the parts and then dry with a portable little hair dryer gun. and your paint peeling problem when masking will be taken care of and you will not have that problem anymore on any model you prep with the plastic coat adhesion promoter after you apply the promoter then apply your primer Oh whichever color you wish depending on what your building. and after that your final paint..
Nicely done.
These are not the 3D printed parts you are looking for :)
If I ever get a 3D printer and I've been considering it for about a year now but still haven't pulled the trigger.
That looks really nice. My only crib would be the omission of the cockpit but I get it, at some point you have to stop throwing money at it. Nice job.
+mvm3897 Thanks and yes exactly. The are so many other parts you could buy for this and it all adds up quickly. Thanks for watching.
Matt's Models Customs n
great job!
I ALSO LOVE THE BASE YOU MADE!
Where can I get the grill for the back?
Hi....I'm afraid the grill is no longer available from the source I purchased it from. Your best bet for any upgrades would probably be this kit from monsters in motion. I would check out this link: www.monstersinmotion.com/cart/star-wars-item-list-i-z-c-11_198/star-wars-30-hasbro-millennium-falcon-panel-upgrade-kit-p-25136
What pinture use to paint the motor's part ? And The cabine ?
+Jorge Arturo Bisteni Caretta Can you be a little specific? Usted puede pedirlo en Espanol si es mas facil.
+Interstellar Modeler que pinturas usas para dar los efecto de daño ?
+Jorge Arturo Bisteni Caretta
Utilizado principalmente pasteles para aplica marcas de quemaduras y danos.
Nice job
Thanks for spelling "millennium" correctly.
HI where can i get the kits from
+KIMRAN SUPAAT If you're inquiring about the Falcon itself, it's not a kit but a Hasbro Toy from December of 2014 and no longer produced. Your best bet now would be ebay. If you're referring to pieces to modify the toy you can search for them on Starshipmodeler.
Very , very nice job !
regards
A few words of constructive criticism. All the streaks you painted in seem to be emanating from the center of the ship outwards. I would think that you would have put them streaking away from the direction of travel. Think of it moving through the atmosphere and the oil etc streaking along the hull towards the rear..
Hi Scott...I agree but I just used shots of the studio model as a guide and just tried to duplicate it. Thanks for watching.
great job. I love it.
How did u cut the windows
Are you referring to the black styrene for the cockpit? Best thing to do is to test it on paper first. You have to cut it in an arc like shape so that it can fit into the cone. The front piece was cut into a circle. Once you have the appropriate patterns on paper, you can use that as template to cut out the a duplicate using clear styrene plastic (that I painted black). Hope that helps
Damn, that is awesome!
Great job!
Can anyone help by telling where is this model to by ? I seems to be at very large model that can give many enjoyfull hours :)
I need side panels. Can you help?
Hi...luckily there is a solution for you. There is an upgrade kit available for a reasonable price from Monsters In Motion. I've not personally seen it but if I were doing a conversion, i would order this for sure. Follow this link: www.monstersinmotion.com/cart/star-wars-item-list-i-z-c-11_198/star-wars-30-hasbro-millennium-falcon-panel-upgrade-kit-p-25136
