Lyrics:
Mama, take this badge off of me
I can't use it anymore
It's gettin' dark, too dark to see
I feel I'm knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door
Mama, put my guns in the ground
I can't shoot them anymore
That long black cloud is comin' down
I feel I'm knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door

There are other versions which call themselves the "original version" which they are definitely NOT. This is the original version as performed by Dylan back in the early 70s that I grew up listening to on AM radio, and the best version as well.

Brilliant writer. Beautiful song. Nobody does this song like Bob Dylan.

Nothing like the original. Even Dylan doesn't do it as well as the studio version. But do yourself a favor and check out this extended version by the Grateful Dead. Jerry Garcia was the BEST at covering Dylan.

I remember when this came out 1973, it made me sad then and it makes me sad today 47 years later. I had just gotten back from Vietnam and found out my brother had been killed 3 months earlier and nobody told me? I had been in Saigon he was in a POW camp.

Wouldn’t be covers without originals. I’m a huge fan of covers but glad you found the real version man. A lot of great stuff by Dylan. His son is also the lead singer of the wallflowers. They didn’t make it too big. But they have that one especially known song one headlight
Guys, this song really isn't about being too old to do the things you used to and slowly making your way back to God, leaving behind all the things that defined you in your mortal life. That is a really nice interpretation of it as well imo, but it really is about the scene from the movie it comes from. A lawman gets shot and as he slowly stumbles his way to a rock to look off into the sunset; his wife follows him and can't bear to embrace him, she just falls to the ground out of of his reach, looking at him with tears in his eyes. He looks at her shocked, afraid and as if to say 'sorry'. She gives a sad smile. He acknowledges it, still afraid, and looks back towards the sun.

In memoriam of my friend John from England. I saw him first time in the Berlin subway where he played "knockin on heavens door" with his old guitar and only three strings on it. He loved and lived Bob Dylan, his greatest treasure was a Dylan songbook. He always got the people who listened to him in a minute and he made seldom less than 100,- in two hours. Then he spent it all for beer to forget the pain in his soul for the rest of the day, falling asleep under bridges.
@baby jesus uhh not everyone lies for clout
At 72, I can really relate to this. The way I figure, I was somewhere before I came here, and I expect I'll return to wherever that is; after that, who knows? Maybe I'll return for another bite at the apple. One thing is sure, I'm not doing this one over. I've had enough.

@@bergerfry I didn't know that. Thank you for confirming Dylan has been a legend in his own lifetime.
By far the best version! The lyrics can only be written by someone like Bob Dylan
The song reflects themes of mortality, resignation, and the approach of death. The narrator, addressing his "Mama," expresses a sense of weariness and surrender, indicating that he can no longer carry the burdens symbolized by his badge and guns. The repetition of "Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door" emphasizes the urgency and inevitability of his situation, as if he is on the brink of passing away and knocking on the door of the afterlife. The imagery of darkness and the approaching storm further underscores the impending sense of finality and closure. Overall, the song captures the emotional weight of facing mortality and the acceptance of one's fate.
