  • Mary Bond: Building Good Posture for Healthy Living
Unlike posture improvement programs that promise instant results, Heal Your Posture: A 7-Week Workshop with Mary Bond, author of The New Rules of Posture, helps you understand the interrelated habits that underlie poor posture. By spending time working with Mary's suggestions, viewers learn to re-map long-standing habits of walking, standing, sitting, and breathing that contribute to unhealthy and unattractive posture, as well as to back, neck, jaw and shoulder pain. Each lesson contains simple anatomy to help you understand your body better, ergonomics tips, and exercises that, once learned, can be incorporated into the activities of daily living. Good advice. The focus of sitting back on the hip bones does in fact promote a more efficient pedal stroke.

Thanks for your comment--makes complete sense to me. I'm glad to know the cycling community is correlating body organization on the bike with a proper fit!

His bike is a "classic geometry" frame with an overly long top tube and therefore long reach. Many road bikes for recreational cyclists these days have a shorter reach to allow for normal lordosis/pelvic tilt and less neck extension. His hand position is in the proper place once you correct him -- his bike reach is simply too long, that is where his brake hoods should be so he can hook his thumbs on them. He should try a bike w/ a shorter top tube or a shorter stem IMO.

My advice is for cyclists who want to avoid the poor posture habits that crouching in the standard cycling position induces. I recently read about a competitive long distance cyclist using a device for holding his head erect after neck muscles give out, an extreme outcome of the aerodynamic shaping of the human body.

You cannot hold your handlebars like that when cycling, you're supposed to clasp them properly. Besides his arms are now straight, which will lead to pain in your upper body and arms.
In conclusion: dangerous, horrible advice by someone utterly ignorant about road cycling.
